>10:30 3 vs 10 Thursday, July 23 OTS 65"s in Olney 2009 Bo Wood reports that the OTS 65ers won one, lost one in extra innings and lost a third game. The team was very competitive as OTS continues to improve in the Olney Tournament each year. All are looking forward to the 2010 Tournament. Thursday, July 23 OTS 70's Win Big in Olnley MD

Saturday, July 11 2009 OTS One Pitch Tournament The OTS 2009 One Pitch Tournament was held on July 4 on the COG Field. Close to 50 players, many with family, enjoyed the games and the picnic. No losers only winners. Thanks to BO Wood and the planning committee for a job well done. All are looking forward to more game /picnic activities in 2009 and 2010. Thursday, July 2 OTS Golf Tournament a Success On Wednesday, July 1, 2009 the Olde Tymers Softball League held it's first annual golf tournament, thanks to the efforts of Andy Maggitti. The event was held at the Deer Run Golf Course in Berlin. With 6 teams participating, the League managed to make over $630 for the league, which will be designated to buy equipment to improve the softball experience for the OTS members. Jesse Bare and his team came in first place with a score of 9 under par. That team was made up of Jesse, John (Jerry) Robb, Butch Taras and Jesse Bare II. The team with the highest score was the one headed by league President Bo Woods, they came in at 4 over par. On the up side, Bo reports he only lost 3 balls, which is good for all since that course is tight and he could have hurt someone with an errant shot ! ! ! Buzz Taylor had the longest drive and Andy Maggetti had closest to the pin. We look forward to an even better tournament next year, with hopefully more teams involved. We want to thank Andy Maggitti for putting this tournament together, and also Ed and Margaret Colbert, the owners of Deer Run, for their assistance is making this event a success. And a big thank you to all who played in the tournament, we had a great time while making money for our league. Have a safe and happy 4th of July. Monday, May 25 A Note from Bo Wood A Note from the President OTS is now over twelve years old. A great number of people have been major contributors to its development and success over the years. It all started with Roger Howard, manager of the Millville by the Sea Team. The four teams then have expanded to 11 today. Games were originally played on the old Indian River High School girl’s softball fields. The grounds were maintained by the school district. Each team umpired for the other. Funding for the league came from the players. There were no sponsors or outside funding. In fact the cost per player was in real dollar terms more expensive then compared to today’s $40 fee. As for today’s funding, currently the league receives almost $4000 from sponsors. Also the current treasurer, Archie Alexander has been able, over the past few years, to secure substantial funding from outside sources. In addition, several members have made considerable donations to the league, one of which made it possible to recover the infields last year. While the Church of God has allowed us to use the land and while it maintains the outfields. Finally, over the years and currently, a small cadre of OTS members has and continues to donate a great deal of their time to the league. This includes the officers, managers, umpires, and field maintenance helpers. Their efforts have allowed OTS to keep the cost of playing down. As noted earlier, the cost of playing today is less in real terms, while the tasks and funding requirements have expanded rather dramatically. Unfortunately, the numbers of workers have not kept pace with our operating needs. Now to the point of this note. As we begin out Summer 2009 season I must say and emphasize that we are very short of the needed volunteer help. In fact we have reached a point where the current cadre of volunteers is too low to operate the league properly. Again over the years, a small number of volunteers, though their efforts, have kept the cost of playing in OTS so very low. Other leagues charge as much as $120 for a three-month season, as they, unlike us currently, have had to pay for umpires and field maintenance. Your $40 is for a four-month season with a free April. To overcome this shortage we are appealing to all OTS members to find a way to help. To this end each team in 2009 is being asked to provide at least two volunteers to become umpires. In addition, on two separate weeks over the season, each team is expected to maintain the fields. We are also in need of a person to maintain the web site. In the past only a few of the players have carried the load. The league will not fold, although it may be forced to increase to yearly player cost to cover the needed tasks. For those willing to umpire contact Tom Farrah our VP. His phone number is 302-539-9392. Or email him at ttommydc@yahoo.com. Web page helps contact Dick Mullins < our secretary, at 410-614-9347 or mullinsrk31@aol.com. As for field maintenance, your manager will let you know when you will be needed. Please try to be available. (A word about umpires to managers and players. All the umpires are volunteers. They do receive some training, but much of it is on the job training. Their calls are not always perfect. Some would be umpires are sensitive to the differences of opinions on close plays and hesitate to volunteer. In game situations only the manager can communicate with the umpires. Judgment calls are to be respected however rules violations should be pursued. All players are requested to note their concerns to their manager and not the flied umpires. Thank you.) Again, we are all in this together, win, lose, or draw. My experience has been that there is no finer group of people on Delmarva with which to be associated. I would hope that we would all work together to keep the OTS experience at the high level it has been and will continue to be for all of us. Bo Wood, President PS. Two special games activities are planned. The first is a one-pitch tournament on the Fourth of July. All are invited to play. Let your manager know if you will be available on July 4, 2009. It will be followed by a family picnic. Also be alerted that teams will be selected for the Olney Tournament later in the summer. Three teams will be formed: 65+, 70+, and 75+. Managers are Bo Wood, 65+; Tom Harvey 70+; and Mike Carta 75+. Players will be invited to try out for the team. Let one of the managers know if you wish to be considered. Monday, May 25 OTS One Pitch Tournament July 4 OTS will conduct a one pitch softball tournament on July 4 on the COG fields, for all registered OTS players. Fun begins at 9:00am. A family picnic will follow. OTS will provide hots and drinks. Players are requested to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert for six. Players let yuo manager know if you will be participating ASAP. Sunday, May 3 Report from Stafford Seniors on Double Header with OTS May 17 On April 17 the OTS managers and Administators played a team from Hal Alpiar's former Jersey Team. The teams split a doubleheader. Organized by Bo and Hal it was a great success. Here is a report on the day from the other side. STAFFORD SENIORS SPLIT WITH DAGSBORO On Saturday, 17 Stafford seniors accepted the challenge from Hal’s Hooligans and, despite the threat of swine flu, traveled south of the border (albeit, it was only to Delaware) to answer the question – “Are we good, or what?”! The day started out innocently enough as 13 of us gathered at Home Depot for a 7:15 departure (Bruce, Reggie, Jerry and Bobby O left directly from Sea Oaks). The trip to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry was entertaining and adventurous. I’m sure Eddie, Biker Bob, Dave and Dominick learned some new accounting tricks from Danny’s rants. In Earl’s car, Steve and Original Lou struggled with the Saturday NY Times crossword puzzle, while Tino kept muttering that Steve was still out to get him. Jimbo brought home-made donuts and, of course, before we got to the ferry, a pit stop on the side of a once beautiful NJ highway was required to give Carl some relief. Then there was Fisherman Joe, an 11th hour recruit (he actually got to Home Depot on time – well almost on time, as Dave waved to him as he was leaving the parking lot and Joe was arriving). Gino agreed to ride with Joe to keep him company and teach him some new Italian curse words and bring him into the conservative republican fold. But we all managed to meet up at the ferry, and after breakfast in the Gourmet restaurant in the ferry waiting room, boarded for the 75 minute ride to Delaware. The bay was calm, fishing boats were heading out for the day’s catch, and we passed schools of dolphins slithering through the water, occasionally jumping up to wish us luck (yes, Bruce, there were dolphins – but Bruce spent most of the trip on the second level of the ferry looking down into a car below us at the babes who stayed in the car for the ferry ride and who seemed to be showing off their legs and … (oops, I forget Nancy is on this email)! On the other side, we were met by Hal and a few of his teammates to drive Bruce’s and Joe’s crews to the field (Bruce and Joe did not take their cars on the ferry so they had loaded all their equipment into Dave’s car at Cape May). In about 45 minutes, we arrived at a beautifully maintained field located somewhere in the wilds of Dagsboro, Delaware. The field was built by the Dagsboro players, who also maintain it. Job well done! And the weather was nothing short of spectacular. So let the games begin. Dave was our manager, and he was well prepared, having computer printed out the starting line-ups for each game, and the players who would substitute in predetermined innings. Unfortunately with Fisherman Joe deciding to come at the last minute, changes had to be made and there were enough scratch outs that by the time we got to the second game, no one could figure out when they batted – or even if they were in the game. We were visitors in the first game and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and we were able to hold that lead for the entire game, though at times, we were only one hit away from disaster. Dom and Eddie showed us some tricks on the left side of the infield, as they made sure that whoever got to a grounder first, would fumble it to the other, before the throw to first. Jerry pitched a masterpiece and Eddie and Tino provided the lumber. Some timely hits and stellar defense (other than the Dom to Eddie to Dom juggling act) and we prevailed 7-5. Although the picnic was scheduled to begin after the second game, our hosts put out some food after the first game. Jerry knew his responsibilities were over, so right before the second game began, I noticed him with a sausage in one hand, potato salad dripping from the side of his face, and a chicken bone in his other hand. Dominick was supposed to start game 2 at first base, but as we were told to take the field, Dominick was seen devouring a sausage and chicken, waiting to dive into the potato salad. So he missed the first inning (“I didn’t know I was in the lineup” he said – “I saw someone else listed at 3rd base”). Joe was slotted to start in right field, but he tried to give Dave some help, and suggested he be a DH (we weren’t using DHs in these games). So Dave said, “okay – but I’ll put you in in the 6th inning since that is when you usually show up”. Despite all this, game 2 got started, and it was a seesaw battle all the way. It seemed for a while that whoever was up last would be the winner (we were home team for game 2). After 6 innings, however, we were tied at 6-6. But some timely hits and ugly errors in the top of the 7th led to 4 Dagsboro runs and we came to bat with our backs against the wall. After 2 were out, we staged a mini rally and after 2 runs were in, we had the tying runs on base when the dream died. So now we were all invited to partake in the picnic, and our hosts did a great job – but because the field is owned by a church, no beer was allowed. You could see Dave starting to get the shakes as the picnic progressed without a cold brew. When our bellies were full, it was a 30 second drive to the American Legion where beer is allowed. So iced cold pitchers solved Dave’s problems, as well as others. And you could tell we were south of the Mason-Dixon line – the Mets, Yankees and Phillies were playing, and day 1 of the NFL draft was just beginning – but all the TVs had on the NASCAR channel! After we were done at the American Legion and the beer was gone, we headed back to the ferry (after getting a volunteer to drive Dave’s car). Once again, a pleasant ferry boat ride, and once on the other side, it was a NASCAR race to get off the ferry and on the road again. Danny went back to his orations and Steve and Lou gave it one last shot to finish the puzzle (Saturday is always the toughest puzzle). Suddenly cell phones started ringing in our car. Bobby O was panicking – he had a game against Mirage on Monday afternoon in the new Spring League, but all his equipment was in Dave’s car and they couldn’t reach anyone in that car. “Did we know where they were”, Bruce asked, because Bruce’s car wasn’t going to Home Depot. Fortunately, we were able to reach Eddie’s cell in Dave’s car, and Bobby O and Dave were able to rendezvous at the rest stop above Atlantic City. So hopefully Bobby was able to have a better game using his glove and cleats this afternoon. Sometime around 9 pm we all finally arrived home, Steve and Lou were able to Google the missing clues, and I’m sure everyone got to sleep early, and slept well!! In the fall, or next spring, the Dagsboro squad is invited to Doc Cramer for a rematch. We all look forward to the games, and hope that we can be as good a host as they were for us. It was a long day, and a long way to go for a couple of softball games, but, hey, what else does a bunch of compulsive senior softball players live for! YOUR HUMBLE CUB REPORTING REPORTING FROM THAT TINY HAMLET OF STAFFORD TOWNSHIP LOCATED IN THE HEART OF SOUTHERN OCEAN COUNTY BY THE BEAUTIFUL JERSEY SHORE Saturday, September 6 Dynamic PT Wins the Whaples Tournament With wins over Bayside Homes and Millville by the Sea Dymanic PT, on the final day, won the Third Annual Frank Whaples OTS Post Season Tournament. With Liv Whaples in attendance, Frank's widow, Dynamic avenged a Millsville victory for the regular season championship. Congraulations to Manager Bo Wood and the team. Monday, September 22 OTS Senior Olympic Team Wins Silver at Dover The OTS Senior Olympic team in the 60 to 64 age bracket won the Silver Medal on Saturday September 20th by defeating 2 of the 3 other teams in their division. The team, managed by Bo Wood ended up playing 4 games that day; 3 in their division and 1 game against the Delaware Legends who are in the Majors division. It was a long day with the first game starting at 9a.m. and the 4th game ending at 5:30 p.m. The team played all day without a single injury which was very fortunate considering there were only 12 players on the roster. The team had to play the Legends in the 1st game......the toughest team at the tournament......and although the pitching and fielding was very good, the team was not able to put enough consecutive hits together to keep pace with the Legends hot bats. From the 2nd through the 4th game, the team really put it all together, handily beating 2 teams from Wilmington and giving the Stars, the eventual Gold Medal winner, a run for their money. The manager of the Stars commented that we were their toughest competition of the day. OTS Team players were: Pitchers - Eddie Sternberg and Ed Wilson Catchers - Ron James and Terry Thomas Infield - Harry Banks, Jesse Bare, Johnny Allen, Bo Wood Outfield - Pete Harris, Ron Weber, Tom Faulkner, Tom Copp

OTS sent two teams to the 2008 Olney Tournament. The 65+ managed by Bo Wood and the 70+ managed by Mike Carta. Tuesday, July 22 OTS at the Olney MD Senior Softball Tournament OTS sent two teams to the 2008 Olney Tournament. The 65+ managed by Bo Wood and the 70+ managed by Mike Carta. Both teams had many new faces, as time made more eligible for each age group. For past 70+ team members, a new age group beckons, as the tournament added a 75+ bracket with four teams. The 65+ team represented Grotto Pizza while the 70+ were wearing ReMax Coast 65+ and Country Real Estate colors. The Grotto Team hit well but so did its opponents, as they dropped three straight. The ReMax Team won its first game blowing out a team from Brandywine 16-1 in five innings. They also won the last game they played, 15-7 over the Bowie Seventies, the usual Tournament Champion. The bats went dry in the second game as they dropped a 17-2 decision to the Montgomery County Seniors, the eventual winner. Vinnie DelVecchio batted cleanup for Montgomery. The second place finish was the best in the six years the team has participated in the Tournament. It should be noted that all contributed; especially noteworthy was the pitching of Larry Pulcini, who had to work all three games in 90-degree temperature. Several players on the ReMax team had serious problems with the heat. All will agree that this is the type of tournament that is enjoyable whatever the results, and all look forward to next year's event. Wednesday, July 9 Courtesy Runner Rule The recent courtesy runner rule controversy/discussion has generated about as many opinions as there are players, managers and assistant manager in the league. Some feel that the rule [Item J-2] needs to changed, others feel it should stay the same, others feel some minor modifications are needed, and others feel that no league rules should be changed during the season. Frankly speaking, it’s a quagmire with no answer that’s going to satisfy everyone. Consequently, it has been decided that the league we will follow the rule as written at the beginning of the 2008 season, but allow for game day modifications when both opposing manager agree. Following the completion of the 2008 season the League’s Board [Officers & Managers] will revisit the courtesy runner rule and hopefully come up with modifications that are satisfactory to all. The current rule [Section IV, Sub-heading J, Page 8] reads as follows: J. Courtesy [Substitute] Runners 1) Players who have difficulty running from home plate, or on the base paths, due to injury, age or for medical reasons may use a courtesy runner. Before the game begins, the manager should give the umpire and opposing manager the names of any players requiring a courtesy runner from home plate. 2) The designated courtesy runner will be the last batter who made an out; or, if that player is on base running for another player, then the next previous batter, to make an out., etc. Exception: In the first inning, with no outs, anyone on a team roster may serve as a courtesy runner. 3) A courtesy runner from home plate must start from a position directly behind the catcher and not leave that position until the ball is struck. If a runner leaves this position before the batter hits the ball he/she will be declared out. 4) A courtesy runner may not be used after one pitch to the next batter. 5) Another courtesy runner may not replace a courtesy runner, except in event of injury. 6) A courtesy runner on base when it is his/her time to bat will be declared out on base, but will be allowed to bat. ----------------------------------------------- A. Further Definition of Rule J-2: [1] Courtesy Runner from Home Plate [Other than First inning]: The player who made the last out, unless he/she has already run in the inning and/or he/she is unable to run [due to age, injury or for medical reasons], is theonly person who can run for a player needing a courtesy runner from home plate. * If the player who made the last out is ineligible or unable to run then the next to last person to make an out must be the courtesy runner. The team manager and/or assistant is responsible for maintaining a record of who made the last out[s] and providing this information to the umpire in a timely fashion when a courtesy runner is required. [2] Courtesy Runner on Base: The player who made the last out, unless he/she has already run in theinning or he/she is unable to run [due to age, injury or for medical reasons], is the only person who can run for a player needing a courtesy runner who is on base. * If the player who made the last out is ineligible or unable torun then the next to last person to make an out must be the courtesy runner. The team manager and/or assistant is responsible for maintaining a record of who made the last out[s] and providing this information to the umpire in a timely fashion when a courtesy runner is required. -----------------------------------------------B. Game Day Modification Option: If two opposing mangers wish to waive any portion of thecourtesy runner rule, [agree to a game day modification of the rule] they must mutually agree to the waiver before the game commences and notify the umpires of the portion(s) being waived. Examples of alternatives that have been used with some success this season include: * Any player may serve as a courtesy runner from home late, at the beginning of each inning until the first out is made. After the first out is made the player making that out must serve as courtesy runner. * If the player who made the last out is ineligible or unable torun then the next to last person to make an out must be the courtesy runner. * The selection of courtesy runners for a player who is on base,in any inning, is at the manager’s discretion. * If the person who made the last out is unable to pinch run for any reason, go back one spot in the batting order If these alternatives and/or others you may try prove successful, under actual game conditions, please keep them mind and share the results with an OTS Board. This input will be utilized when the Board reviews and updates league rules prior to the 2009 season. Regarding 2008, this memo is the final word [end of discussion] regarding the courtesy runner rule for the 2008 season! Tom Harvey Friday, March 28 Regulations for Use of Illegal Bats Illegal Bats Players using bats that are not approved for slow pitch softball use by the ASA, will be subject to the following penalties: 1. The first time a player is caught using an illegal bat he or she will be declared out. If the illegal bat is discovered, after the batter has hit a ball, all base runners must return to the base they were on when the batter came to the plate 2. The second time a player is caught using an illegal bat he or she will be declared out and suspended for 3 games. 3. The third time a player is caught using an illegal bat he or she will be suspended from the league.
