Sad To Report The Passing of Long Time President Bill D'Onofrio

Bill D'Onofrio, Long Time President and Manager in the Delaware Semipro Baseball League, passed away earlier this week after battling a long illness. In 1959 Bill started his Managing career by Running the St. Anthony's team from 1959 to 1961. In 1967 he was appointed President and ran that position through untill he stepped down in 2005.  D'Onofrio went on to manage Brooks Armored Car, Booth Construction and Carling Brewing. He then went on to sponsor and manage D'Onofrio Insurance. Bill had 351 victories as a manger which places him as the third best winningest manager in Delaware Semipro History. Bill was a great organizer/manager/statistician and will be greatly missed in the delaware semipro league.

"BEHIND THE PHILLIES DUGOUT WITH JERRY HORGAN"

Arguably, last night, October 12, 2009 could and probably is the most exciting game in Phillies history. Without a doubt, the Ryan Howard 2-run double with 2 outs and a 2-1 count on him to tie the game 4-4 was the most famous double in Phillies history. But, and I know you agree, the Chase Utley at bat before Howard, when Chase was behind in the count 0-2, with TWO outs, and then milked a walk to give Ryan a chance was the turning point of the game. Then Jayson Werth, AKA J-Dub, put the icing on the cake with his great at-bat, lacing a clutch single to score Howard! The irony is that back on October 12, 1980, the Phils beat the Astros in Houston to win the N.L. Pennant! I know in an earlier post that Game 4 of that 1980 N.L.C.S was the better game, and I still believe that, but Game 5 of 1980 was the more exciting game. Believe me, there is a difference. Last night's memorable game brings back memories of October 4, 1980, when Bob Boone, who only batted .229 that year, singled to centerfield off Woodie Fryman to score Bake McBride who was on second base to tie the game, and there were TWO outs then. The Tugger pitched 3 innings of perfect baseball, Mike Schmidt hit a 2-run homer off Stan Bahnsen in the top of the 11th inning to win that ballgame, and the rest is history! By the way, Sunday Night's Phillies game ended at 2:14 A.M. on Monday morning, I heard my Wilmington News-Journal land on my front steps at about 4:00 A.M., and they had a full account of the game, feature stories no less. I had to go on-line to read the Daily News and Inquirer stories of the game. Also, Lenny Dykstra hit a 2-run walk-off homer off Astros pitcher Dave Smith on Saturday, October 11, 1986 at Shea Stadium over the rightfield fence. There must be something about October 11 and 12.

Drillers 2009
Monday, October 12
Drillers Take Over 28 Title

Shane Noonan, Bill DiIenno, Scott Quinn, Tommy Esterling provided the offense for the reincarnated Drillers in a team that was composed of many of the same players from the 1995 Drillers that played in the Vic Willis League. Now they were competing for the 28 and over MSBL title for Delaware.

Drillers took game one 4-3 on a 6th inning 2 out home run off the bat of Ryan Newell. Tommy Esterling came in for relief in a well pitched game by Rob Hiesler. Esterling held on to get the save in game one. Bill DiIenno had a solo homerun in the 3rd inning.

The deciding game was something for the story books. With the Phillies trailing 7-5 the phillies rallied in the top of the 7th inning after the defense fell apart. Drillers made 3 costly errors which allowed the Phillies to tie it up 7-7. Esterling struke out 2 of the 3 remaining batters to keep it at 7-7.  Esterling was the first batter in the bottom of the 7th when Mark Wilhelm told Esterling just to hit it outta here. On the first pitch Esterling hit a ball that cleared the trees in left field for a walk off win for the Championship.

Jamie Rogers, Jeff Rogers and Steve Terranova are former semi-pro players that play for the Phillies. Drillers Semi-pro players include Bill DiIenno, Mark Wilhelm, Ryan Newell.

STARS WIN THE TITLE

Highlights - Gildeas Stars won the best of seven championship Behind the arm of J. R. McAllistar and the
Bat of Ryan Griffin.  McAllistar threw a complete game, giving up 2 hits and striking out 12.  Ryan Griffins'
3 run home run in the first inning was all the offense the Stars needed.

Congrats to the Stars, Billy Cannon and Bob Gildea for a great end to a great season.

Tuesday, August 25
Game 5 Is Tonight at Banning

Highlights - Gildeas Stars took game 4 of the championship series.
With the game tied 1-1, the Stars erupted for 5 runs in the sixth inning
highlighted by Mike Godwin's bases clearing double.  Yacer Garcias
picked up the win, scattering 4 hits, striking out 4.  Game 5 of the series
will be played Tuesday night at Banning Park, with the Stars holding a 3
games to 1 advantage.

Friday, August 21
Stars Took Game 3

Gildeas Stars took game three of the championship series in another
extra inning game.  The Raiders got on the board in the first inning on a solo home
run by Billy DiIenno, but that was all winning pitcher Steve Messick would allow as
he threw a complete game, walking 2 and striking out  9. The Stars tied the score
in the 5th as Josh Dean walked, stole second, advanced to third on an errant throw
and scored on a wild pitch.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Stars loaded the bases
with a hit batter, single and fielding error.  With one out, Mike Godwin drew a bases
loaded walk to end the game.

Wednesday, August 19
Raiders win Game 2

Raiders scored 6 runs in the 6th inning to beat the Stars 8-2 to even up the series.

The raiders took advantage of sloppy play in the bottom of the 6th to even the series at one game apiece.    A great pitching matchup between two of the leagues’ best pitchers, the Raiders’ Brett Urban and the Stars’ J. R. McAllistar, it was the Raiders who took advantage of 4 errors in the bottom of the six to get the win.  Up to that point, the Stars held a 2-0 advantage on an RBI single by Frank Devonshire in the second and an unearned run in the 4th.  Both pitchers held serve until the 6th, when the wheels came off the Star’s wagon defensively.  4 errors and 7 runs later, the game was no longer in doubt.  Urban quietly retired the side in the 7th for the win.  Offensively, The Raiders were led by Doug Eitleman and Jose Rivera who each had two hits.

Tuesday, August 18
Stars Grab Game 1

Gildea's Stars took game one in the championship series in an 8 inning thriller. Gildea's Raiders took a 2 run lead into the top of the 7th on an rbi single by Mark Moser and an infield error. The Stars came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game on an rbi triple by Brian Short and a fielding error. In the eigth inning, the Stars loaded the bases with one out and Brian Short singled in the game winning run with an rbi single. Mike Godwin picked up the win in relief, shutting the Raiders down in order in the top half of the 8th. Soley was 3-3 with 2 rbi's and Brian Short went 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 3 rbi's to allow the Stars to Edge The Raiders 7-6 in extra innings. Garcias started and threw 5 2/3 innings and struke out 5 while walking 3.

Game 2 Tuesday at 7 PM at Banning Park.

Monday, August 17

Raiders On To The Finals

Gildea Raiders beat Home Mattress Center 6-5 in the final inning scoring the final run on a walk. Doug Eitelman hit a 3 run home run in the 3rd inning to give the Raiders a lead but then Home Mattress regained the lead later in the game on an error. With Home mattress up by a run in the last inning, Jose Rivera had a base hit down the third base line to tie the game at 5-5. Mike Walls came in with the bases loaded to relieve Dave Mullin and walked in the go ahead run. After which, he went on to strike out the side. Home Mattress tried to retaliate in the last part of the seventh but only managed to get Bryan Fitzgerald to second base after a single and a balk.

Gildea's Raiders will take on Gildea's Stars in the best of 7 series which will start on Monday.

Down The Lines With Jerry Horgan

Mark, I wish I could clone myself and be at both games tonight. But, I will be at your game tonight at Banning Park. I have more friends on your team, like you and Mark DeCaro. Also, I want to be there to show my support for Max, who suffered a horrible family tragedy recently. Max is as stoic as they come, he never changes his facial expression. You would never know if Home Budget, or I should say Home Matress now, if they were winning by 10 runs, or losing by 10 runs. That is what makes a great manager. I know you remember Larry Bowa, former Padres and Phillies manager, and every time the TV camera would show him you always knew by his facial expressions how the game was going. My prediction for tonight is that the best player in the league, Mike Walls, gets a game-winning walk off hit in the bottom of the 7th inning, winning the game 3-2 off of Brett Urban. I would guess that it will be a matchup of aces, Dave Mullin for your team, and Brett Urban for the Gidea's Raiders, with the rainout on Wednesday, and the off-day on Thursday night. I took a drive up to Citizen's Bank Ballpark on Thursday morning, went to the Majestic Clubhouse store, and bought 3 items, paying $308.00 for them. The best one was a very large picture of the last out of the 2008 World Series, then the pile-up on the mound, and it has me in the picture, 9 rows behind the Phillies dugout. It cost $149.00, but I swear it is the best $149.00 that I ever spent! It is hanging on my living room wall right now, but I will bring it to Banning Park tonight to show you, Bert, Max, and Bill Dilenno. Mark, you and Bert Talley have given me some of the best Semi-Pro thrills in my 41 year career. Just last year, when I believe you were 44 years old (Actually 41), in the finals at Banning Park, you hit a 3-run homer way, way, over the left field fence. Some spectators, including me, estimate that mammoth shot to be about 500 feet! That is just allegedly on the distance though, just like when I, at the tender age of 10, was "allegedly" retrieving foul balls at 18th and Van Buren, AKA "The Mecca", and throwing them back at 70 miles per hour! Also, my 2 biggest thrills in my 41 years of watching the Semi-Pro Games, well number 1 would have to be on Tuesday, August 21, 1991, when in game 7 of the finals when Bert Talley, not known as a power hitter, with his Brandywine team losing by 2 runs in the top of the 7th innining, with darkness setting in, hit one into the rightfield woods at "The Mecca", which led to Brandywine winning the championship! My 2nd biggest thrill came back in 1973, the 1 year that Bert Talley played for Parkway, when with once again darkness setting in, Bert came to bat in the bottom of the 7th inning in a tie game, 2 outs, a runner on either 2nd or 3rd base, 1st base was open, so the pitcher was intentionally walking Bert, or at least trying to. Well, as fate would have it, one of those pitches came a little bit to close to home plate and Bert reached out and hit one of those patented Rod Carew singles to leftfield to win the game! Legendary Parkway manager John Hickman, with the scorebook in 1 hand and a Kool cigarrette in the other hand, I think he must have smoked 3 packs of Kools that night, came running down from the 3rd base coaching box screaming "Eight of clock lightning, Eight of clock lightning", over and over again. It was one of my most memorable nights in my 41 years of following the Semi-Pro League. Anyone that is reading this feel free to come on out tonight at Banning Park where my normal spot is right by the first base bag, and I will bring plenty of "sodas". See you tonight Mark, Jerry Horgan.

Gildea's Stars took game 2 of the series behind a 3 hit shutout by J.R. McAlisster strinking out 10 in the winning effort. the Stars broke open the game  in the 5th when leadoff hitter James Mraz doubled and Brian Short tripled to score Mraz. Short later scored on a double steal in the same inning. The Stars added an insurance run in the sixth on an rbi single by Mraz. Game 3 will be played Monday at Banning Park at 7 pm, with the Stars holding a 2-0 lead in the best of 5 series.

Monday, August 10
Eitelman's Blast Provides The Power In A 10 Inning Thriller

Doug Eitelman hit a 2 run home run in an extra inning thriller to even the series at one a piece. It was a classic pitching duel between Dave Mullin and Brett Urban as predicted that ended with  a well struck ball leaving the yard off Eitelman's bat in a 4 - 2 victory for Gildea Raiders. Dave Mullin was lifted from the mound in the 10th inning by Manager Max Beheler who opted to go to Shortstop Mike Walls to get through the next few batters.. Walls came in and walked the first batter with Doug Eitelman on deck. Doug Eitelman made his way to the plate and squared up twice to bunt but pulled back on Wall's offerings. Eitelman took the next pitch and drove it over the right field fence for the game winning runs.

Brett Urban threw all 10 innings while striking out 9 in the process and walking 5. Last years playoff game between Brett Urban and Dave Mullin went 11 innings at Eder park. The final game of this series will be another matchup between Urban and Mullin scheduled for Friday night.

Game 3 will be Monday night at Eder Park 7 PM.

Thursday, August 6
Stars 5, Pro PT 3

Gildeas Stars take game one of the best of five series behind a strong pitching effort from Steve Messick, giving up 5 hits while striking out 8.  The Stars scored three runs in the bottom of the six on a bases loaded walk to Brett Smith then took advantage of a throwing error for the go ahead runs.  Joe Fowler was 2 for 3 with a solo homerun and 2 rbi's for Pro Physical Therapy. Matt Harden had a double. Game two will be played Friday night at Eder Park beginning at 7pm.

Wednesday, August 5
Home Mattress 3-0 Over Raiders

Nick Lidner pitched a stellar game but did not get the run support to provide him with a win. On the flip side of that, Clint Kuhl was having the same problems with his Home Mattress center team. Almost zero offense from both sides until the 6th inning when Jeff Skorup doubled into center field. A base was open and Mike Walls was the hitter. Mike has been red hot pretty much all season so Gildea's decided to put him on to get the double play in order. Jesse Crockett hit a line drive over Duben Word's head that plated both Skorup and Walls to bring it to 2-0. A bad hop infield hit by Bryan Fitzgerald plated Jesse Crockett for the final run. Clint came in and shut them down in the top of the 7th for the win.

This Fridays game will be a classic matchup between Dave Mullin for Home Mattress and Brett Urban for the Gildea Raiders at Banning Park 7PM.

FRIDAY 6 August

Gildea Stars @ Pro Physical Therapy Eder Park 7:00pm

Home Mattress Center @ Gildea Raiders  Banning Park 7:00pm

Thank you for your cooperation. later Max

Pro Physical Therapy takes Damiani In Two

Matt Harden doubled in Tom Ogden with the game winning run in the 9th to lead Pro Physical Therapy into the second round of the Delaware Semi Pro Playoffs. Harden was the game winning Pitcher in relief of Nick Galinskie. Harden pitched 4 1/3 scorless innings. The  game  was also highlighted by Brandon Menchaca's steal of home in the sixth inning to tie the score. Damiani Tile Pitching kept the game tight with Ryan Shaw, Jesse Jamison and Andy Hoover all pitching well and keeping the Pro Physical Therapy team bats quiet. Daminai Tile out hit Pro Physical Therapy 8 to 4 but stranded bases loaded twice in this extremely tough fought game.

Great Season for the ever improving Damiani Tile Tigers and I am sure better things will come to them next season.

Good Luck To Pro PT in the next round.

Eitelman Clears The Fences. Three Fences To Be Exact.

Doug Eitelman drop a tape measure tater that is estimated to have landed 480 feet from where it made contact with his bat at Eder Parks home plate.  Two reports state that it went over the right center field fence then the left foul line fence of the next field and then cleared the left field fence of the major league field fence. Gildeas Raiders got much needed offense that put them up 5-1 against the Dragons. Raiders lead the series 1-0 in the best of three wild card series which continues tonight at Eder Park at 7:00 PM.

Behind the Dugout With Jerry Horgan (In the 3rd person Voice of Ricky Henderson)

Well, tonight, July 30, 2009, the Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball League's greatest fan, Jerry Horgan, reached another milestone. Jerry retrieved 7 foul balls tonight at 18th and Van Buren, AKA "The Mecca". The game was Pro-Physical Therapy against Home Mattress Center. Jerry's previous record for retrieving foul balls was 6, set on June 7, 1986, in a game between Canada Dry and Wilmington Truck Body, also at 18th and Van Buren. Jerry has retrieved  1,078 foul balls to date. Jerry has to be in Baseball Heaven right now, with his beloved Phillies winning 19 of 23 games, a torrid pace. The Phils are well on their way to their 3rd consecutive playoff appearance, and most likely, their 2nd consecutive WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!! I don't know how Jerry will handle that, because it had been 28 years between Phillies World Championship's between 1980 and 2008. I just hope he does not have a heart attack or something when they win it all again this year. Remember, Jerry is 51 years old now. Jerry started playing baseball in the Wilmington Optomist Little League in 1968, at the tender age of 10. The games were played at a very quick pace, usually endind at about 7:15 P.M. Then Jerry would walk over to the Semi-Pro games at 18th and Van Buren, ever since then, he has beeen hooked on the Semi-Pro games. If the Phillies are playing a night game, which most of them are, Jerry records those games on his Comcast DVR, watches the entire Semi-Pro game, then goes home and watches every pitch of the Phillies game, starting with the 1st pitch in the 1st inning, without knowing what has happened in the Phillies game. He watches those games as if they were live. Jerry retrieved his 1st foul ball at a Semi-Pro game back on May 25, 1968, at the age of 10. The game was between Parkway and Schaefer Brewing, Scrappy May hit that foul ball, and Jerry immediately threw it back to the 3rd baseman for Schaefer Brewing at a speed estimated by most spectators at about 70 miles per hour, remember, Jerry was only 10 at the time. This is the stuff that legends are made. Yes, it was 41 years ago, and there is some questions if Jerry really did throw that ball, at the age of 10, at 75 miles per hour. It is similar to the alleged "called shot" in the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field, Yankees against the Cubs. Babe Ruth, and remember I am saying allegedly, pointed his finger toward the outfield at Wrigley Field and said the he was going to hit the very next pitch for a homer against Cubs pitcher Charlie Root. He did! But there are many different versions of that story, nobody knows for sure. Jerry, now 51 years old, fields foul balls at the Semi-Pro games and throws them back to the 3rd baseman at 90 miles per hour. I know for a fact that this is true because I have seen him do it many, many times over the years. Also, during Jerry's 41 year career, he has done it pure. There have never been any accusations of any steroid use, or any other performance enhancing drugs. Jerry is as clean as they come, and every ballplayer and fan will tell you that. I know fans are not allowed in the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame, but if they were, Jerry would make it on the first ballot, garnering 100% of the vote. Jerry Horgan is a true legend, and also a role model for children.

Jerry wrote this piece in the third person in honor of Rickey Henderson, who was just inducted into the Hall of Fame last Sunday. Rickey is famous for speaking in the third person. Here is a little known fact, Rickey Henderson was born on December 25, 1958, Jerry was born on December 25, 1957, and Rickey and Jerry both bat right-handed and throw left-handed, which is very, very rare. As the late broadcaster Mel Allen used to say, "How about that!"

Coming Down To The Wire

Second Place is not going to come easy for anyone. Raiders are looking more and more like a candidate for 3rd place with both Pro PT and Stars winning last night.  Pro PT has a chance to go into 2nd place with a win over Home Budget tonight at 18th and Van Buren. Stars have one game remaining with the Delaware Blue Coats tonight. Stars are 2 - 0 against the Blue Coats. Pro PT is 0 - 3 against Home Mattress. If the Stars and Pro PT win tonight, they would both be in 2nd place. If both Teams loose we will have a 3 way tie for 2nd place. A three way coin flip will decide 2nd place in that situation. All three teams will flip a coin and the odd coin will be declared the 2nd place winner.

Meeting Last Night Over The Play-offs Summary

Games will be played out for the rest of the season. Some talk was to just drop the remaining few games and just start the play-offs, but after the vote, we have decided to play it out to see where things end up. In case of rain tonight, the games will be rescheduled for Friday if we able to do so. If a rainout takes place on Thursday or Friday, those games will not be made up and the wild card play off will start on Monday.

Raiders are still hoping that and Pro PT lose 2 games so they can retain second place. Raiders were 15-4 at one point this season and would really like to have second place and the bye. Not sure if that is gonna happen with the Stars having an easier schedule than Pro PT has for the remaining few games. I know the teams like the Blue Coats and Walter's Collectibles,  that are already out of the play-offs,  would love to play spoilers and then look ahead to the next season and build on the success that they have had in thier first year. The Stars could win thier last 2 games and clinch the 2nd spot and seal a bye. pro PT has to go through Home Mattress and Hy-Point Dragons to keep hope alive for the 2nd place position.

In case of a tie for 2nd place, there will be no single game play-off spot as decided last night at the meeting. 2nd place will be a draw of straws or a flip of the coin. We could even have a 3 way tie for second. Not sure how that would work, I guess a round robin format of coin tossing. As always this league always ends up being very interesting going into the last few games of the season.

Best of luck through the remainder of the season.

Thoughts and Prayers Go Out To Max

Please keep Max Beheler and his family in your prayers. Justine Kearns, Max Beheler's GrandDaughter, passed away yesterday. She was a big part of Home Mattress Baseball. Justine was the bench coach for Home Mattress. Justine attended every game that she possibly could.  Justine helped her Grandfather set up the bases, carry in equipment, joked with the players on the bench, broke up fights, and give encouragement to anyone that needed it. Justine you will be greatly missed.

Max, We Love you!

Home Mattress Center Cliches The Season Title

Home Mattress took the Season Title last night with a 3-0 win against the Bucco's. Clint Kuhl threw a complete game shut out and helped Home Budget win its second Season Title in its history. With the score tied 0-0 in the 5th inning, Marc Decaro ripped a 2 RBI double down the right field line. This win give Home Mattress it's second Cartwright Trophy over the past 3 seasons.

Bucco's face elimination from the play-offs with no games remaining on thier schedule, but still have a shot for a "Play In" game if Damiani Tile losses the rest of their games. Damiani has 3 more games. In this league, it has happended before. They was a 3 way tie for 4th place a few years ago and I believe the Bucco's were involved in that 3 way tie.

Pro Physical Therapy and Damiani Tile Play at DelCastle on Tuesday

There was an error on the website's schedule, so we just wanted to make sure that everyone knew that it was at DelCastle and not Dickinson High School.  The schedule that the coaches recieved was correct from Max Beheler.

Over 28 No Hitter Thrown By Doug Cook

Ex-Semi-Pro Pitcher Doug Cook tossed a No'hitter and was only two walks away from having a perfect game on Sunday. The Red Sox beat the Mavericks yesterday with a 10-0 win which puched thier win streak to 9 straight games. Congrats to Doug and best of luck to the Red Sox.

Starting To Heat Up

Every game is important for almost every team at this time of the year. Pro Physical Therapy has won 8 out of the last 10 games and have jumped up into 3rd place with The Stars and they are both only one game over the newly renevated Hy-Point Dragons. Hy-Point has won four straight and is still shooting for top four honors for the quickly ending season.Stars have been playing close to .500 baseball over the last two weeks and if the continue on that pace, they should at least settle in with the 4th spot in the play-offs. Raiders should be able to finish at least in 3rd but probably will end up in 2nd place a game or 2 out of first place. Buccos still have hope for getting into the play-offs, but are in a must situation for every game from here on out and with only 2 games left, thier chances are still good for at least a wild card shot. Damiani Tile has 6 games left and could actylly shot for 3rd or 4th place, but will need some help from a few other teams. I can see them getting a Wild Card Play-in game. Blue Coats have had a good season for a first year teams and have shown major improvements over the year when some teams never expected them to have as many wins as they had this season. Walter's are the only team that is Mathematically eliminated at this point. An upstart team that will improve over the next year is what I see with this team. They have played many good games over the season and they know what they hae to do now to improve over the next 10 months.

Home Mattress Would have to have a Mets style meltdown to throw away first place over the next week of baseball. But then again, the Mets have done it over the last few seasons, so anything is possible.

"ON THE FOUL LINE" w/ Jerry Horgan

I want to congratulate Walter's Fine Collectible's on their win on Friday night, July 10 by a score of 7-6 over the Delaware Blue Coats. It was a very entertaining ballgame, and I was glad that I was there. Bert Talley was especially happy that Walter's won, because the Bucco's and Blue Coats are competing for the final playoff spot. Even though Walter's is only 2-19, they could easily be 8-13 or even 9-12. They have played a number of close games this year. For example, on Wednesday July 1 at Delcastle, they lost to the Bucco's 3-2 on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the 7th inning. It was a well played game. I sat on the Bucco's bench that night, because I am on their roster. If they were ever short of players, they would have to play me. Hopefully I would be in either rightfield or leftfield and bat ninth. And I would also be praying to God that no balls get hit to me, as I am 51 years old, and my eyesight is not very good. But I would imagine that the opposing team would intentionally try to hit the ball my way. But, going back to last Friday, Dane Walter, who just graduated this year from St. Mark's High School and was a member of their state championship team, had 2 hits.as did Dillon Oakes, Brent Treml and Tim Barker. Merril Sterner pitched a complete game victory, a very gutsy performance on his part. I have known Martin Walter for many, many years now. He is a class act. A little sidebar here, Martin named his son Dane, after former Phillie Dane Iorg, who is most famous for getting the walk-off hit for the Royals inn Game 6 of the 1985 World Series. Anyone who names his son after a Phillie is okay in my book. Well, I will be leaving my house in about 45 minutes to attend the Bucco's-Pro Pyhsical Therapy game at Dickinson High School. But, Martin Walter and the rest of the Collectible's team, I will try to attend as many of your games as I can the rest of the season. You guys are a class act, and don't ever forget, keep your heads up! Till next time, Mr. Semi-Pro, aka Mr. Phillie, Jerry Horgan.

Jerry Horgan Stuck at 1,065

Jerry took his normal position at a Delaware Semi-Pro game, just to the left of the left field line. Most players play between the lines, but Jerry is definitely in the Delaware Semi-pro Hall of fame for Most Foul Balls retrieved in the history of the DSPBL. It was a bad night for Jerry, in that he did not get any foul balls last night at Rockford Park. So on the foul ball meter, it remains at 1,065. trying to get Jerry to start submitting stories about this league and its players past and present. Between Jerry and Bert Talley, there would be some great stories and remembrances.

ADD / DROP Deadline coming up

Players can be dropped or added up to the July 1 deadline (We are making the assumption that it is 11:59 pm July 1).  The Roster has a limit of 30 players. We will make sure that the teams have all players listed as elegible for the play-offs.  The list will be passed around before the play-offs to the managers and or coaches. Playing an inelegible player is a reason that a team be forced to forfiet the game in which the inelegible player did play.

Ground Rule at Rockford and Canby

There are a few weird ground rules in our league since we play on open fields most of the time. At Rockford Park, if a ball is hit down the left field line and rolls foul after 3rd base and before the crest of the hill that is 322' away, it is to be ruled a ground rule double. If it lands fair in left field and rolls foul after the crest of the hill it will be all the runner can get. On any of the fields (except for Dickinson, Banning and DelCastle) at the end of the foul fence a ball that is caught after the fence should be ruled an out if the fielder does not go into the dead area at a 90 degree angle from the fence line. If you catch and carry into the dead ball area the ball is deemed dead and no runners can advance.

The following excerpt is taken from the Delaware Semi Pro baseball rules regarding Canby and Rockford.   The flags or cones should be placed at the top of the hill in left field. If no Flag or cone is placed out there it is the umpires discretion to determine if it went out before or after the crest of the hill.

3. Trees within The Defined Playing Area

Any fair or foul butted ball landing in any tree within the defined playing area shall be  considered “in play” with a catch being allowed as long as the ball is not impeded in its  natural trajectory by branch, leaf, or tree trunk.

6. Fair Batted Balls Bouncing Into Foul Territory.

a. With respect to the left field foul flags at Canby Park and Rockford Park, and the right field foul flag at 18th and Van Buren, any fair batted ball bouncing into foul territory before these foul flags shall limit the runners to two bases, with the runners advancing said two bases at their own peril. Play is dead once the runners reach their second advanced base. The batter-runner is the determining factor.

b Any fair batted ball bouncing into foul territory beyond the left field foul flags at Canby Park and Rockford Park, and the right field foul flag at 18th and Van Buren, or any fair batted ball bouncing into foul territory in right field at Canby Park and Rockford Park and in left field at 18th and Van Buren, shall not limit the runners and the runners may advance any number of bases at their own peril,

Composite Bats Deemed Illegal in our League

As everyone knows we go by the rules of Major League Baseball and more specifically, the American League rules. Bamboo, Two Piece, and Composite bats have been deemed illegal. Many bats have been seen in game use and will be acted upon by the umpires.

From an e-mail with the Umpire Association:

After checking with Dave Farone DIAA and IBUA rules interpreter, the composite bat IS illegal -- yes, if discovered/challenged BEFORE next pitch the batter is called out -- any advancement by runner(s) is nullified and returned to original base -- hope this gives insight to the question.   IBUA

Brett Brothers bats, Dimarini bats, Baboo bats, and bats from Louisville with the Coating over top with the Rings located at the sweet spot are some of the examples of the illegal bats.

First Pitch of the Season

first1

First Pitch of the season was a fastball down. Not sure what that means for the rest of the season, but we will find out soon enough. Upstart Delaware Blue Coats came out ripping the ball in the early part of the game but the Hy-Point Dragons got to them to take the first game of the 2009 season. Hy-Point is in sole possession of first place at this time.

BOXSCORE Spreadsheet Available For Teams To Use MANDATORY TO GET STATS IN

Please look at the spreadsheet that I have created for the league to use. Save the spreadsheet to your harddrive and then input your game data. Save the document (Click on the Handout "BOXSCORE" and then click on the file "BOXSCORE" and it will ask you to dowload it to your harddrive). I would suggest having the date in the name of the file when you save the games. Always name the file different after each time so you don't lose your data.

Please send the document electronically (Fax or e-mail) to the News Journal, Max Beheler and myself. I can keep the stats current if everyone sends them to me. People complain because we do not have stats completed, but you have to remember that we have to get them to compile them. Send them daily so I can keep up on them.

Remember if you have 2 players with the same last name on the team, always put the first initial in the stats. Even if the other player isn't there.

18.

Hello, My name is Jason Konieczny. I am very interested in playing for a team and I've been looking everywhere with no success. I have contacted TED BOJARSKI with my information. My information is as follows:

Bats- Right
Throws- Right
Positions- OF/2B
Height- 6'0''
Weight- 175lb.

I can track down fly balls pretty well in the outfield. Mostly played CF & LF. Its been a while since I took ground balls at Second but I'll play there if you need me. I have speed, can steel bases and hit for average with some pop (a good 2, 3, 5 and 6 hole hitter; but I'll hit where you need me). Baseball has always been a part of my life playing from t-ball to senior leagues and early High school ball. Also, I try to get to the batting cages to keep my timing up to speed... even know its only 70-75 mph, timing is everything.

I'd really enjoy the opportunity to help a team win and compete. I'll play hard and take coaching for what its worth. I look forward to your call and playing baseball in this league.

Thank you for your consideration,

Jason Konieczny

Talbot Turnings Bats are local and a Great Value

Mike Randolph has been a personal friend of mine for 7 years now and has perfected the craft of making bats that look more like fine furniture than a peice of wood that you beat up a 5" piece of cowhide on a warm summer evening. Mike's bats go out to college, semi-pro and Minor League players all over the world. he always has repeat business because of the quality of his bats. Mike is located in Easton Maryland.  Mike has completed his Bat turning shop and he can get you the bat you want in less time than any other company. He can produce any model that you would want and can do it in many different color combinations. The man is a pleasure to deal with and has always produce a great product. I will be using only Talbot Turning bats again this year and hope to flip a few gazer's into right center so I can set myself up for another stolen base this year. Talbot Turnings deals in Maple, Birch and is getting into Beech this year. Beech has almost identical properties of Birch. Mike makes bats for other companies that just take his product and put thier label on it. Might as well skip the middle man and go right to the source.

If anyone is interested in doing a group purchase, let me know and I can combine our orders and bypass the shipping cost as I will pick up and deliver the bats to your door. (Semi-pro players and coaches only).

Quote of the day or week (whichever I have time for)

“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.” Bob Feller

“I think about baseball when I wake up in the morning. I think about it all day and I dream about it at night. The only time I don't think about it is when I'm playing it.” Carl Yazstremski

Greg Lemon Ranked in the Top 10 Prospects in Independent Baseball

Greg Lemon's bat continues to impress at every level plays. Baseball America has listed him as one of the top 10 prospects in Independent baseball.

Baseball America's view of Greg:

10. Greg Lemon, 2b
St. George (Golden)

Lemon is both a coach and a player—he spent the 2008 college season as a volunteer assistant coach at Georgetown, and he's now been hired as an assistant coach at Temple, but with his sweet lefty swing, it might be worth putting his coaching plans on hold for a while.

Lemon, 24, was a Division III All-American at Salisbury (Md.), where hit .410 during his senior season and .372 for his career. He hit a robust .386/.463/.542 with seven home runs, 90 runs scored and 22 steals in 26 attempts for St. George this season. His picture-perfect lefthanded stroke is his best attribute, but he also has average speed and a very good feel for the game. What is more questionable is his ability to stick at second base in affiliated ball. He has to prove that he can stay there, as his profile as a high average and on-base percentage top-of-the-order hitter doesn't profile as well if he has to move to another position.

ALL AMERICAN SPORTS ACADEMY

Our fall team went to this facility located in Elkton Maryland and found a great facility with plenty of room for hitting, throwing and taking ground balls. They have an "Iron Mike" and regular wheel based pitching machines to perfect your gosh aweful swing over the cold winter. :)  A Jugs gun will tell you exactly how fast the pitch was that just blew you away. Go down there and check out Chuck Henze's facility. It is only 6.5 miles from downtown Newark.

The facility will be host to some Major League players coming in to work on a new state of the art batters box that has scensors to detect problems in thier swing. The team from Philly and Baltimore will use the facility over the winter to check out weight balance issues and to see if more power can be developed by working on the players lower half. Pretty interesting stuff.

OLD TIME BASEBALL IN DELAWARE

After a 130 year absence, the Diamond State Base Ball Club is back!  We are pleased to inform you of the recent formation of Delaware's first amateur adult vintage base ball club.

Vintage base ball is a sport played according to the rules and customs of the mid to late 19th Century.  Although players wear period uniforms and use period equipment, the games are actual unscripted athletic competitions.  Vintage base ball revives the roots of our national pastime and harkens back to a time when the sport was first organized by amateur clubs.  In fact, we have adopted the name and uniform style of one of Delaware's first organized teams, Wilmington's original Diamond State Base Ball Club of 1865.

The Diamond States will begin play in April 2009, competing against other regional and national clubs from the Vintage Base Ball Association.  Our home games will be played at an historic ballfield at Fort DuPont State Park, near Delaware City.

We hope you can help us in our player recruitment effort by spreading the good word about our ballclub to your colleagues and friends.  We're seeking adult players over the age of 21 of all skill levels with an interest in the roots of the game.  We're also looking for umpires, scorekeepers and sideline interpreters.  Our recruiting brochure is attached.

If you know of anyone who might be interested, we'd sincerely appreciate your sending them our way.  Our website provides more detail: http://diamondstatebaseball.org/site.

Thanks so much for your time and indulgence.

Happy Holidays,

John Medkeff

Skorup, Aviola, Mullin and Humphries Clinch the Series for Home Budget

John Humphries came through with a 2 out 2 strike double to bring in Marc DeCaro in the 6th inning to tie the game in game 6 between Home Budget and Canada Dry.  Jeff Skorup's double plated the winning run and gave Home Budget it's second championship. Dave Mulllin threw 6 innings allowing 7 hits and striking out 4. Phil Aviola came in and got his 4th save by striking out the meat of the order in consecitive order in the 7th inning and sealing the deal for the Budgeteers.  This is the second Championship in the last 3 years for Home Budget which has seen the championship being passed back and forth between the Home Budget and Canada Dry Team over the last several years.  Gidlea Stars won it back in 2005.

Wednesday, August 20
Canatelli Cruises to 8 - 1 Win

Chris Cannatelli threw a complete game allowing 8 hits over 7 innings with 2 K's and 0 walks. Chris Cannatelli was supported by great defense by Eddie Eckenroad who had two "plays of the week" by laying and robbing two Canada Dry players of basehits in center field and getting an assist at second for the first play of the game. Marc Decaro had 3 Rbi's for Home budget.  R.T. Plumski banged out 3 hits and Brian Testa had a double for the Bottlers.

Game 4 is tonight at Banning Park at 7:00 PM.

Canada Dry took the second game of the series and took a commanding 2 - 0 lead over Home Budget with a 4 - 0 win on Monday night at Banning Park.  Matt Klaciewicz threw a complete game shut out with the offensive help of R.T. Monday, August 18
Gallagher Blasts a Big One in Game 1

Tommy Gallagher hit a two run homerun in game one to finish off a 4 - 0 win against Home Budget at Eder. Tommy Gallagher hit one which was estimated at well over 400 feet (Google Earth Ruler) to punctuate solid complete game shut out for Brett Urban.  Brett Urban pitched 7 complete innings and continues to baffle the Home Budget offense.

When I asked Brett for a comment about friday nights game he stated, "Don't worry, I won't be pitching on Monday, You might have a chance." You gotta like his game.

Thursday, August 14
Phil Aviola Saves The Day

Phil Aviola hit a 2 out double in the top of the 7th inning to knock in Joe Bolinski to give Home Budget a 4 - 3 lead. Phil Aviola came in to complete the save opportunity in the bottom of the 7th inning which prove to be the series deciding game to send Home Budget on to face Canada Dry in the best of 7 series for the Delaware semi Pro baseball League Championship series that starts this Friday at Eder Park at 7 PM.  Mark Wilhelm hit a 3 run home run in the second inning to put Home Budget up 3 - 1. Cecil came back in the 6th inning to score twice to tie the game a t 3 - 3.

Packer Larson picked up the win for Home Budget in a game that found Max Beheler using every available pitcher to give Home Budget the chance to pick up the win.

Home Budget will play Home Games at Banning Park and Canada Dry will play thier Home Games at Eder Park during the Champioship series.

This was a great series that could have gone either way for either team and I personally would like to comment on the Cecil team and how well they played the game and carried themselves on and off the field. This new team proved to be a great team that has a lot of class and composure. Great job and good luck with all that you guys do now and in the future.

Mark "Williestick" Wilhelm

Matt Folke had 2 RBI's for the Canada Dry team that exploded with 4 runs in the 6th inning before closing out the game with a 7 - 1 victory.

The Dragons played a great series and deserve the respect of being a tough team and I am sure we will see good things from them next year.

Wednesday, August 13
Jordan Oncay Provides The Offense In Home Budget Win

.500, Are You Kidding Me?

A pretty good season for Mike Walls is an understatement. Mike has been on fire since the beginning of the season when he started off at a 1 for 10 stint. That went away pretty quick. Mike continued throughout the season to drop duck farts, missles, gay'zers and bombs on route to finishing the season with an incredible batting average of exactly .500. What a great season for an unassuming player that quietly ended a great season being 200 points above good.

The all-Time Regular Season Batting Average goes to Ralph Conrad who hit .579 for Parkway in 1962.

Last Friday a Record was Set For Most Hits In A Game Between Two Teams

Bucco's and Hy-Point met last week at Rockford Park and had a marathon of hits. So many hits, that it is a new record for "Most Hits in A Game Between Two Teams". 34 hits were compiled between the two teams last Friday. Bucco's had 12 hits and  Hy-Point had 22. The previous record was held by two teams. In 1966, Parkway beat Canada Dry 26-6 and 32 hits were banged out in this game. C. Wallace Insurance and Canada Dry also had 32 hits in 1993 in  a single game.

Most Hits by a Team in a single game is 26 by Parkway in 1966.

Andre Duffie needs two more Triples to set the record for most Triples in a season. He set the Freshman Record at Delaware with 9 and had 3 in one game vs. Hofstra May 1, 1995.

Triples, Season, Freshman - 9, Andre Duffie, 1995

Triples, Game – 3, Andre Duffie vs. Hofstra, May 1, 1995
