new letter for the end of the season
DELAWARE EXPLOSION 14U TRAVELCompletes Season Middletown based, Delaware Explosion 14u travel softball team has successfully wrapped up its 2009 Season, which began the beginning of August of 2008. The team finished its season last week at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, while competing with forty-four other teams from across the country in the USSSA World series. The team finished the tournament there with a 1-5 record. Although the record didn’t show it, The Delaware explosion team had every team they played on edge. Two of the games were lost in the last inning with the last game played going 9 innings. The team played teams from Virginia, Indiana, Massachusettes and Windsor Canada. The team earned a berth to the World Series by winning the Limerick, Pa. Tournament last fall. The team competed in 13 tournaments this year that ranged from Allentown, Quakertown, Plymouth Meeting, and Limerick, Pennsylvania, down to Salisbury, Maryland through out the course of the year. The second year team is coached by Pete Thursby (St. Georges Vo-Technical JV Coach) as well as, Drew Holowka (M.O.T. Softball Coach), and Tim Clark. Coach Pete’s dedication to this organization has turned the team from a 9-32 record in 2007/2008 to 30-30-2 record in 2008/2009. Delaware explosion averaged 4.51 runs and only gave up an average of 3.30. In 2008 the team averaged only .71 runs a game and gave up 8.14. This was a huge turnaround year for the girls Thursby said. The team finished ranked 127th out of 1073 teams across America and into Canada who are registered under usssa 14u-B. The coaching staffs goal of the program is to help develop athletes both on and off the field. The coaching staff looks for girls who want to work hard at improving skills that athletes bring in every sport they play. Sportmanship, attitude, respect and the willingness to learn is the values that The Delaware explosion look to pass on to the team. Many athletes on the team also/will compete in swimming, volleyball, field hockey, basketball and cross-country for their school teams. The team is lead by 12 athletes who gave 100% toward their development of many skills that will take them to the next level in competitive softball. The team had put their pitching in the hands of Gabby Clark(St. Georges vocational high school). Gabby pitched in over 55 games this past year. Gabby’s 56mph fastball and her ability to hit spots with her other pitches kept Explosion in many games as she was the work horse for the team each weekend in her pitching. At the age of 14 , she really earned from a lot of respect other coaches, athletes as well as parents who played the Delaware Explosion. The Middletown community should keep an eye on this athlete to develop into a competitive pitcher through college. Batting and catching was lead by Courtney O’Connor (Appoquinimink High) and Amanda Pope(St. Elizabeth’s). Courtney was deadly with her catching and there were not many runners who were able to steal when she was behind the plate. Courtney’s bat made the opposing teams play back and she hit many line drives for extra base hits all year. Amanda hit in the number 5 or 6 spot for the team and was also a big bat for the team. Amands played played 3rd base as well as catcher. Amanda’s fielding at 3rd was needed to stop teams from playing small ball against the Explosion. The infield was completed with Sarah Thursby leading the team in the field by securing 1st base and being a productive bat in the 3,4 or 5th spot. The team did not recall any fielding errors Sarah made all year. Sarah’s mentoring of the younger girls was a huge turnaround for the success of the team. Emilee Thursby was called upon for her aggressiveness in the field as well as on the bases. Emilee kept the opposing pitchers wondering her next play. Emilee played shortstop and was used in the batting rotation as a number one hitter or a number 3 hitter. Emilee was on the end of all the throw downs for O’Connor/Pope where she made the tag-outs on runners trying to steal. Both Emilee (a freshman) and Sarah (sophomore) are attending St. Georges this year. The second baseman was Emily Naylor (Smyrna High) who worked her way up the batting rotation from her competiveness all year both in the field and in the batters box. Also being used in both the infield and outfield were Jordan Hitch (Charter High school) and Lyndsey Wagner(Gunning Bedford). They both created opportunities at the plate and in the field . The outfield was made up of 3 speedy runners who helped to shut down fly balls. Brittany Firlein(Middletown High) was the fastest runner on the team and was used in the second spot of the rotation as a hitter and slap bunter. She was able to get on base from her athleticism and knowledge of the game. Courtney Brinsky (Appoquinimink High) was the right /center fielder and used as either a bunter or was able to swing away if needed. Alexandria Ramos (M.O.T.Charter ) was the left fielder and her batting developed as the season progressed as both a bunter and a hitter as well. Kourtney Mitchum (St.George’s) served up many clutch hits for the team in a pinch hitting situation for Clark. Kourtney lead the team in hits throughout the year. She also was used in the outfield throughout the season. The team will be holding tryouts on August 15th from 9-12 at silve lake park in middletown for any athlete who is interested in being a part of this organization. With many of the athletes needing to move up in the age groups, there will be tryouts for both 14 u and 16u players at this time. A second tryout date will be scheduled if needed. If you can not make this tryout and would like more details about the team and the goals, Call Pete at 302-275-6839.The team is also looking for sponsorship for the 2009/1010 season. Please contact Pete as well if you would like to help support this team continue to make a presence in local competitions around the tri-state area. The mission of the team is to develop athletes as well as enable the players to improve their skills so they can compete at the next level.
