10-Year-Old Local Protection Rule Changed
The Davenport East Little League Board recently voted to eliminate a longstanding rule of allowing parents or guardians to protect 10-year-old players from being drafted into the Majors division. The decision will take place effective in the 2009 season.
What this means is that parents or guardians who don't want their 10-year-old to play in the Majors, will no longer have the option to opt out of the pool of eligible players. However, as is the case in every season, there will still be both 10- and 11-year-olds who will not get drafted into the Majors and will play in the Minors. This, however, will be determined by the evaluation process which happens in the draft each year..
Players become eligible to play in the Majors division of our league when they are 10 years old by Little League standards. The Minors division consists of all 8- and 9-year-olds, 7-year-olds who are drafted into the Minors and 10- and 11-year-olds who are not drafted into the Majors.
