With only the top team in both groups advancing to the finals, the Fusion failed to advance to the finals of the Empire Cup this past weekend in Rochester as they finished second in their group. This was the first time this season that the Fusion failed to make it to a tournament final.
The Fusion opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over Amherst. Mikayla netted the hat trick with Kelly adding two and Kaitlin adding a single. From there the Fusion played Syracuse S.C. and were beaten by a last second goal in a 3-2 defeat. The Fusion showed great character coming back from two goals down in the second half only to lose a heartbreaker. Braedyn scored both goals for the Fusion. With the Fusion already eliminated from advancing to the finals they went on to a 1-1 draw with the Rochester Raging Rhinos in their final match of the tournament. Kelly was the lone goal scorer for the Fusion.
Overall it was a very good performance for the Fusion even though they did not advance. The Fusion played quality soccer against older and bigger players showing that they fear nobody. The Fusion finish up their busy June tournament schedule with their third tournament in as many weekends. They play hosts this weekend at the Darlington Invitational Tournament. The tournament schedule will be posted today.
