Coming off her strongest performance of the year, keeper Jessica lead the Fusion to 2-0 shutout victory over the Ajax Hornets. Marred by a broken leg in the pre-season, Jessica made some impressive saves and showed glimpses of what made her one of the best keepers in the league last year. Lynsay opened the scoring 12 minutes into the first half after receiving a beautiful crossed ball by Mikayla. The Fusion had numerous other scoring opportunities but failed to find the back of the net.
The second half saw the Fusion defense stand strong and limited the amount of good scoring chances the Hornets had. The Hornets did have a couple of good shots at the Fusion goal but Jessica made some outstanding saves to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Fusion then added an insurance goal in the 23rd minute of the half, when trial player Meagen P scored her second goal of the year after attacking the net and slamming home the rebound from a powerful shot from Jenna. From there the Fusion stayed compact and solid for the rest of the game coming out with the 2-0 victory.
"It was nice to see Jess coming up with those big saves tonight", a very happy Coach Dave commented. "This was the Jess I am use to seeing. She looks to be getting back into form. The defense was very good in containing the big powerful Hornets strikers tonight. They battled all night and didn’t back downThe mids were very instrumental in both goals tonight and played a great two way game. It was great to see them step up with Breadyn not playing due to a stomach virus. I thought the strikers were also very good and it was nice to see Meagen P get that second goal. She adds some size and strength to compliment the skills of our other two strikers. It adds another dimension to our team".
With the victory the Fusion pull within two points of first place. Their next action sees them as hosts when they play in the Darlington Invitational Soccer Tournament this weekend. Schedules are posted for the tournament and can be found at the bottom of the home page. The Fusion’s next league game sees them return home next Tuesday to take on the Wexford Panthers. Kick off is 7pm at Hydro #1.
