Fusion Coaching Staff Announced for 2010

It has been confirmed that the Fusion coaching staff for the 2010 season.  Coach Dave, Coach Kwame and manger Lyla have been selected and approved by the Darlington S.C. for next season.  "It's going to be a very exciting year" replied coach Dave when asked his thoughts for next season.

"We have the challenge of qualifying for the OYSL and the big trip to Scandinavia."  A big trip indeed as the Fusion will go on a two week tour of Denmark and Sweden to play in two of the largest tournaments in the world.  "The Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden is the largest youth tournament in the world" tells Staley.  "With over 60 countries attending you definitely know you are attending something special.  The Dana Cup #1 is smaller with only 20 to 25 countries attending  but it is a great preparation tournament."    Defenitely a once in a lifetime opportunity for the players who are successful in securing a spot with the Fusion for the 2010 season.

"Lose the Hair Coach Dave" Charity Fundraiser Kicks Off

For most the day cannot come soon enough.  The hair that has a mind of it own is about to see its last days. Coach Dave has announced that he will be shaving his head for charity.  Starting today, the Fusion will be taking donations for the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital Foundation.  Coach Dave is looking to raise a minimum of $1,000 for his charity.

The Fusion girls will also take part as Coach Dave has put out a challenge to each of them to raise a minimum of $40.  Each player who raises $40 will get the opportunity to cut a piece of Coach Dave’s hair off.  The three players who raise the most money will get the honour of shaving off the remaining hair. When asked why he is going from one extreme to another Coach Dave has this to say; “Well first and foremost, it’s for a very good cause.  I work with kids almost every day of the week, so choosing a hospital that does great things to help children every day was a no-brainer.  It also gives us (The Fusion) a chance to give back to the community.  The community has been great to us over our last few fundraisers.  The support has been tremendous for our Scandinavian Tour next year.  We’re just doing our part and giving back to the community.”

Coach Dave has challenged his players, family and friends to raise $1,000 by September 4th.  If they succeed he will allow the Fusion girls to shave all his hair off in Ohio next weekend.

But no sooner did that challenge go out to the players, that another challenge from the players went to Coach Dave.  Kaitlin and Megan have challenged Coach Dave to the following:  If they can raise $1,000 by themselves, by September 4th, then they also get to paint Coach Dave’s toe nails and finger nails “Fusion Blue” at next weekend’s tournament in Ohio. So what’s the response Coach Dave gave to them?  He is going to accept their challenge. “If Kaitlin and Megan can raise a $1,000 in a week, it will be well worth the embarrassment I will have for the weekend.  I accept the challenge!”

So the challenges have been set.  We look forward to as many people as possible contributing to this great cause.  If you would like to donate by credit card, please see the link below or click on the heading of this article to go directly to a web page set up by sick kids for this charity fundraiser.  All donations of $10 or greater, will be issued a tax receipt (if you provide all information required).  We thank you all for your support!

Thanks for your Support!
Yuk Yuk's
Thanks for your support!!!

A big thanks to all who attended the Yuk Yuk's fundraiser last night.  It was a great success as over 150 people were in attendance for the event.

A big thank you goes out to the 10 players from Coach Dave's original boys team (1999-2004) who brought family and friends to support the girl's dreams to play in Europe.  Most of these boys had the opportunity to travel to England and/or Sweden with Coach Dave and Coach Kwame, and understand the importance of experiencing soccer in Europe .  Dave and Kwame were definitely surprised to see you!

A big thanks also goes out to all the Fusion parents who put in the time and effort to make this a successful event.  We hope everybody had a great time!!

New Arena for Gothia Finals
West Side

I guess you haven’t missed that we have a new football stadium here in Gothenburg. Gamla Ullevi has been demolished and a new top modern arena has taken place, Gamla Ullevi. Sure the name is the same but the stadium is brand new.

Something that you might have missed is that all the Gothia Cup finals and finals of the class B17 will be played at the new stadium.
“The new stadium gives us the opportunity to do an even better final arrangement. You will be able to experience the game closer up and really take part of the entertaining football that young people from all over the world have to offer” says Tournament Leader Lena Rönnefors.

This weekend the first match was played at the newly built Gamla Ullevi Stadium and it became a football fest in a crowded arena. Count on the same thing when the world’s best youth teams will fight for victory in the Gothia World Youth Cup on July 17-18.

2009 Ontario Cup Tournament Round Schedule Released

The 2009 Ontario Cup draw took place earlier today in the nations's capital, Ottawa, Ontario.  Already being selected to be one of the hosts for the tournament round, the Fusion anxiously awaited to see who they would welcome to the Hydro Fields on July 18th and 19th.

When it was all said and done, the Fusion were drawn into Group 6 and will host the Woodbridge Strikers, Oakville A,  Nepean Octane and the Aurora Stingers.  41 teams in total will battle it out this summer for the provincial title.

When asked his thoughts on the draw, Coach Dave made this comment:  " It's good to see that most of the best teams have decided to enter the tournament this year.  I am very content with the draw and I'd like to welcome the four teams that we will host in Clarington on July 18th and 19th.  We will do our best to put on a great tournament and make sure that we are a first class host.  When asked which group he thought was the toughest; "Either Group 2 or Group 8 but if I had to pick one at this time, I would say Group 2".

The Fusion could have a preview at what's in store for them as both Woodbridge and Oakville have also entered into the West Niagara tournament.

To view the draw in its entirety, click on the heading of the article.  The snow has melted, the warm weather is here, let the games begin!

Fusion 2009 Roster Announced

The final tryouts have been completed and when it was all said and done, 17 players have been selected for the 2009 Darlington Fusion.  When asked his thoughts on the final selection process Coach Dave had this to say;" The players made it a very tough decision as they all gave it their best effort at the tryouts.  We made the selections that had the best interest of the team in mind and we feel has put us in the best possible position to succeed.  In my position I can't let personal feelings influence the final player decisions.  I would be doing a disservice to the team if I did.  I'm sure I am their least favourite person right now but I wish nothing but the best in the future, for the players who were released.  To the girls who have been selected to the 2009 squad, congratulations!  I look forward to working with 17 very talented players and having a fun and successful 2009 season".  Congratulations to the following players who were selected:

Jessica, Kaitlin, Kelly, Lynsay, Megan, Abby, Braedyn, Mikayla, Kristen, Shea, Kiara, Zoe, Alicia, Mikaela, Mila, Amanda and Picco.

Fusion 2009 Squad to be Announced Saturday, November 29, 2008

And then there were two. Two tryout sessions remain before the Fusion announce their 2009 roster. "This is not going to be an easy decision" replied Coach Dave when asked about the final selections. "Honestly, I wish I could take all 21 players that are currently with us right now. They are all working their butts off in training but the reality is I can’t take them all. It’s really going to come down to who has impressed us the most in the tryouts and if they meet the needs of a team playing in Level 3. No matter what though, all the players should be very proud of themselves. If they don’t make the Fusion, I have no doubt there will be two or three other teams willing to take them in a second."

Good luck to all the players in their attempts to make the 2009 squad. The 2009 roster selections will be announced on the Fusion website Saturday November 29, 2008.

Coach Dave Speaks About Open Tryouts This Weekend

Dear Players and Parents,

First off I would like to thank all who have inquired about playing for the Fusion in 2009.  I seem to have some reoccuring concerns and would like to address them here.

This weekend is open tryouts and it is open to any player interested in playing for the Fusion in 2009.  You can still come to this weekend's tryouts even if you did not attend last weekend's session.  This weekend will indentify what players we will invite out to our fall sessions and final tryouts.  The final team selections will be made no later the mid-January 2009.  The earliest anybody can sign with a team, no matter what team you play for is January 1, 2009.  I find it very hard to see why players are being pressured to sign with a team in October.  By inviting potential new players to our fall training, it gives the player and the parents an opportunity to see if the Fusion program is what they really want.  At the same time it gives the coaching staff a chance to see if potential players are a good all around fit for the team.

There are rumours floating around that the Fusion have already selected the 2009 team and any spots open have already been promised to players.  This is absolutely false!  I have never gone out and recruited players from other teams and am not interested in doing so.  I will not make promises of playing time or other promises just to secure a player on my team.  I only select from players  who show an interest in the Fusion and come out and work hard at the tryouts.  I am confident in my coaching staff's ability to develop the potential in any player that does make the 2009 team.  Player selection is always based on what is best for the team. So in saying that, I can confirm that there are spots to be earned on the 2009 team.

Once again I would like to thank you for your interest in the Fusion and look forward to seeing new and returning players at this weekend's tryouts.

Yours in Sport,

Dave Staley

Final Regional Tryouts to be Held This Weekend

For all Fusion players interested in the Regional Program, please see email below from Regional Coach Michelle White.  The Rossland Fields are located on Rossland Rd. just past Cochrane in Whitby (West of Brock Rd. just past All Saints and Donald A. Wilson High Schools).

Hello Coaches,

As mentioned in my earlier email, the last ID session will be held on Sunday October 26th from 9:00 - 1:00 at Rossland Soccer Fields (north field).
Below is the new info.....
Sunday Info:
- Players are to register at the table that will be set up.  They will be given a pinny to wear for all games that they participate in.  They are not to swap their pinny with anyone.  We will be putting each player on a team.  (there will be no teams playing against each other - it will be strictly made up teams)
- Players are not to wear identifying club gear for the game (eg. club shorts / club jersey).
- There will be no coaches allowed on the side of the players.  We will have DRSA board members present to coach the kids.
Additional Info:
- The coaching staff will be meeting on Monday the 27th to discuss player selection.  Players will be notified shortly after by the DRSA office if they have been selected for the district program.
- There will be an information session on Wednesday November 5th for all selected district players and parents.  Time and location to be confirmed but we are looking at 7:00 - 8:00 at Durham College.
- Twist conditioning for district players will begin the following week (November 11th).
Important Note for Coaches
- we had complaints at the last district session regarding both girls and boys coaches talking to players that were not with their clubs.  Coaches, please remember that this is an opportunity for the Durham players NOT for coaches.
Thanks,
Michelle.

One Goal Makes the Difference at MEAD USA CUP

One goal... That was the difference between the Fusion making the semi's of the MEAD USA CUP. The Fusion were narrowly defeated by PASA Purple 2-1 in the final round robin match of the tournament.

Just like the first two games, the Fusion had a penalty kick awarded against them and in this game it made the difference. With 10 minutes left the referee awarded a penalty when Jenna and a PASA player crashed together in the corner of the box. The Fusion could not come back after the PK goal and were on the losing end of a 2-1 result. Another very questionable PK call that this time would end the Fusion's chances of winning their group. Mikayla scored the lone Fusion goal after a brilliant Maradonna move by Braedyn set up the goal.

The loss would leave the Fusion sitting in second for their group. Tied in points for the Wild Card, the Fusion were eliminated losing on Goal Differential by 1 goal. A great effort by the girls all weekend as the played in temperatures in the high 90's.

PASA Purple would go on to win the Mead Cup Championship. All three tournaments that the Fusion did not qualify for the final this year, were won by a team coming out of their round robin group.

The Fusion finish up the season this weekend in Ottawa as they play a year up in the Ottawa Royals Kick It In The Capital Tournament.  Good Luck Girls!!

Playing in temperatures in the 90's, the Fusion lacked the energy and quality touches usually present, as they drew the Pacesetter Premier 2-2.  Kaylee and Mikayla were the goal scorers for the Fusion.

The Fusion are off and running at the Mead Usa Cup.  After falling behind in the first minute to the Dynamo Red, the Fusion came back with three unanswered goals.  Up 3-1 in the game, the game got a little tighter when the Dynamo were awarded a questionable penalty kick.  Scoring on the PK, the Dynamo put pressure on the Fusion but the Fusion stayed strong until the final whistle for a 3-2 win.  Braedyn lead the way with two goals and newcomer Kiara scored her first goal with the Fusion.  Mikayla was superb in setting up two of the goals and Jessica was very strong in goal for the Fusion.

Next game for the Fusion is a 2:45pm kick off vs. PaceSetter Premier.  Good Luck Girls!!

Fun in the sun as the Fusion head down to the 2008 Disney's President's Day Soccer Festival

The 2008 version of the Fusion has not even been selected but their first ever international competition has been confirmed.  The team will head down to Orlando, Florida in February of 2008 to play in the Walt Disney President's Day Soccer Festival.

"Congratulations! We are pleased to confirm your team's acceptance into Disney's President's Day Soccer Festival, which is to be held February 15-18, 2008. With great facilities, great competition, and the magic of the Walt Disney World® Resort, we look forward to providing a memorable tournament experience for you and your team.

Once again, thank you for your participation, and we look forward to hosting your team at Disney's President's Day Soccer Festival".

Mark Luster
Tournament Director

With only one Canadian team entered in the 2007 edition of the tournament, the Fusion could possibly be the only team representing Canada in the 2008 tournament.  "It's always a proud feeling when you get the chance to represent your country in a tournament" an excited Coach Dave responded.  " I think the girls will all make us very proud no matter what the results".

When asked why such a big trip so early in the season, Coach Dave had this reply; " There are a lot of reasons for this trip.  First it gives a chance for us to get away together and bond as a team.  It also provides us with some very good competition on grass fields that we won't be able to get here for another 4 1/2 months from now.  Plus it gets the girls use to playing on the 'big stage'.  What could be bigger for a 10 year old than playing soccer at Walt Disney World?  Sure they'll have some nerves but if they get used to playing in the big games now it will make all the difference down the road.  This is the first of many opportunities we want to give to the girls in their soccer careers".

It seems the girls will take after their coaches as both Coach Dave and Coach Kwame played at Disney's Wide World of Sports (home to the Atlanta Braves Spring Training) with Inter Oshawa FC back in 2000. "They are the best fields Kwame and I have ever played on in our lives.  We still talk about those fields to this day.  It's a first class tournament and something the girls will always remember".

"We plan on having the team picked by no later than the first week of December" Coach Dave replied when asked the time frame he has for having the selections made for the 2008 team.  "Each and every girl is going to have to show us the desire and commitment if they are going to make this team.  It's not going to be an easy task as there are a lot of good quality players fighting for spots this year.  Then once we finish the selection process, we can start fundraising for the trip and preparing for the 2008 soccer season".

One thing's for sure, with a start like this to the 2008 season it looks like it 's going to be an exciting one to remember for the Fusion girls!

Fusion Roster Set For 2008 Season

The tryouts have been completed and the Fusion coaching staff have made their decisions on the final roster for the upcoming 2008 season.  "This was the by far the hardest decisions we had to make when selecting which players to take" noted Coach Dave.  "For the first time in the history that I have been coaching, I actually had to release very good players.  It's unfortunate that we couldn't have taken them all but we as a coaching staff are very satisfied with what we have selected".

The 2008 Fusion will now start to prepare for the Buffalo and Walt Disney World tournaments upcoming in December and February respectively.  The roster page has been updated and new roster pics will be updated within the next week.  We would like to send an big welcome and congratulations to the three new players, Mikayla, Jenna and Kristen.  Congratulations to all the players who made the team!
