What's involved in being a DPYB manager:
What is the time commitment like?
The manager is responsible for all aspects of the team’s operations, including among other things: drafting players, organizing practices, setting and managing team lineups (including planning for and keeping track of mandated player participation), maintaining discipline and sportsmanship among players. Managers must also talk to parents and keep them informed. Some managers like to have a lot of practices -- from 2 or more a week in the preseason, and 2 to 3 a week during the season, but field space must be shared so your practicing time may be limited by field availability and the ability/willingness of players to take on more practice
times. A field schedule is written (by the Division Commissioner) right after the draft and all managers must stick to it. Shetland and Pinto 7 teams normally play 1 game a week. Pinto 8 and divisions above typically play 2 games per week March through June. More games may be played especially if rained out games need to be rescheduled. The league holds a mandatory manager/team parent meeting before the season start, managers needs to attend player tryouts, the team draft and other managers’ meetings during the season if required.
Managers will need to find a player-parent willing to be the team parent immediately upon formation of the team. The team parent is assigned the administrative functions for the team such as informing team members when required by the team Manager. Coordinates the volunteers to ensure team involvement in the following activities: Picture Day, Casino Night, Auction Basket, Family Fun Day, Snack Bar Schedule, Score Board Schedule, etc, so these duties will not fall on the back of the manager.
Managing is a signifcant commitment but the more organized you are, the less time it takes.
How does the manager's role change from division to division?
At all levels, DPYB Managers and Coaches are expected to cultivate players’ baseball skills, knowledge of the rules of the game, sportsmanship, discipline and team play. In the younger divisions, effective Managers will need the ability to teach young children the most basic fundamentals of throwing, catching, hitting, fielding, running, and focusing on the game. In older divisions, pitching, game tactics, and strategies come increasingly into play.
What resources does DPYB provide me as a manager with?
DPYB provides each team with: Basic team equipment - catchers gear, batting helmets, game and practice balls, some bats, first aid kit, field space, scheduled practice times, subject to weather and field availability. Jerseys for all players, and baseball hats for all team members, managers, and coaches. The league does not provide socks, cleats, gloves, belts, or pants. Batting cages with pitching machines (Big Iron Mikes) are available for the Mustang, Bronco, and Pony divisions according to schedules prepared by the Division Commissioners. DPYB attempts to hold both Coaching and Players’ Clinics before the start of each season run by professional Baseball Coaches.
Background Checks required of all Team Managers & Assistant Coaches. {required by the league’s insurance carrier}
Once you are approved by the Board of Directors as a team manager or assistant coach you must submit to a background check.

Background Check for Managers and Coaches
(Fall Ball 2009)
required of all Approved Managers & Asst. Coaches
All Team Managers and Assistant Coaches must go through a background check before being allowed to be in the dugout or on the field during a game (maximum of three individuals per team ... a manager and two assistant coaches.
After reading text scroll down for Link for Background Checks
DPYB has contracted with an online service that will perform this background check and return the results only to the President of DPYB. If any issues arise, the applicant is free to discuss the results of the background check with the President. While we have guidelines for approval or disapproval based on the background check's results, we do have an appeals process in place for those that wish to pursue their options with DPYB.
Obviously, DPYB's intent here is to protect the children of our league, not to ferret out any issues an individual may have had in the past. If you are uncomfortable with having a background check performed, it may be best to not offer to manage or coach a team. Any issues or questions may be raised with the President of DPYB before or after submission of background check data.
Background Check Data Entry Information
Before clicking on the background check link below, please be sure you have been accepted by either the DPYB Board as a Manager or by your child's manager as an Assistant Coach. DPYB pays for each background check so we wish to ensure only those actually cleared to manage or coach submit data.
The applicant enters all personal data directly online - no one from DPYB is involved in your Background Check Application - and the President is the only recipient of results (if any).
Registration Page will say "2009 Fall Ball Season" .
On the first screen of the background check select either "Team Manager" or "Assistant Coach" from the drop-down selection list.
The other choices from the list will NOT direct you to the Background Check data entry screens.

Standings on Website
An explanation on how they work
Division standings for Pony, Bronco, Mustang and the competitive part of Pinto 8's season are available by clicking on the "Standings" link on the menu at the left of this screen.
Standings are sorted as follows:
1st Sort: Percentage = [Wins+(Ties/2)]/(W+L+T)
2nd Sort (in case of two teams with the same percentage): Number of Games Back from Leader
In case of a tie in the regular season standings, then the tie-breaker is as follows:
- Head to Head record during regular season
- Least runs allowed during regular season (PA - Points Against)
Home teams for playoffs are determined by highest seed in each pairing.

Batting Cage Rules
An adult MUST operate the machine and be next to the machine while the kids are hitting.
Do not assume someone will be using the machine after you complete your session
If there is no one at the cages waiting to use them, your team is responsible to do the following:
Gather all the balls and put them in the machine hopper.
Turn off the machine.
Unplug the machine.
Roll up the cord and place it in the hopper.
Cover the machine
The cages and machines are for the sole use of DPYB teams. Individuals who may want to use them must ask the permission from the DPYB Board.
Most importantly lock both doors of the cages [should a lock be missing the cord must be locked in the metal bin]
The cages must be locked because of safety concerns and the fact that we do not make our machine available to anyone who desires to use them.
Field Closure Rules & DHHS Field Use Policy:
Guidelines from the City of Dana Point
Field Closure Rules
The City of Dana Point's general rain rule is:If any rain has fallen DPYB must wait 24 hours before using fieldsfor a practice or a game.
- If the field is saturated the closure may be longer than 24 hours.
- If there is a Field Closed sign on the field (the city may close the fields for other reasons than just rain) you may not use that field until the sign is removed by the city. If you use the fields, DPYB may be fined or forfeit the right to use the fields. Any manager that practices on a closed field will forfeit a game in the standings, lose a practice time and be personally responsible for any costs of repairs to the field.
- Use common sense! If the dirt areas are moist any footprints will solidify when dry and ruin the infields. If the turf is wet any activity will damage the grass and make for patchy fields. This degrades the fields your kids play on! Help us maintain the infields and grass areas for safe play! This applies even if the Field Closed signs have not been placed on the fields!
- We will do our best to inform you about field closures via the website or hotline, but the city does not have a rain hotline or website and often the first coach to the field discovers the Field Closed signs.
- If you discover a sign on a field and the hotline did not say the fields were closed please call your division commissioner ASAP and inform him of the field's status. We will check and update the outgoing message on the hotline and the website as soon as possible.

The 10 Commandments of Baseball:
Hints to pass on to your players
The 10 Commandments of Baseball
1. Nobody ever became a ball player walking after a ball.
2. You will never become a .300 hitter unless you take the bat off your shoulder.
3. An outfielder that throws the ball behind the runner locks the barn door after the horse is stolen.
4. Keep your head up and you may not have to hold it down.
5. When you start to slide, Slide!!! He who changes his mind may trade a good leg for a broken one.
6. Don't quit. The game is never over until the last man is out.
7. Always run them out. You never know.
8. Don't make excuses on the bad hops. Anyone can field the good ones.
9. A pitcher who hasn't control hasn't anything.
10. Don't find too many faults in the umpires. You can't expect them to be as perfect as you
