Dana Point Youth Baseball
"Home of Big League Play"
“It is the primary objective of Dana Point Youth Baseball to inspire and promote to the youth of our community the ideals of good sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play and character. The League hopes to achieved this objective by providing an exceptional baseball program, lead by adults that promote these ideals by deed and example. We strive to have our children leave this program with self-reliance, self-motivation, and as citizens knowing the value of giving back to the community at large.”
“The attainment of exceptional skills or the winning of games shall always be secondary. All players, regardless of their prior experience or skill level, will receive a fair share of playing time and will receive equal coaching attention for the development and practice of baseball skills. All players will be provided with ample opportunity to demonstrate their skills during scheduled games. All players will be given the opportunity to experience the different positions in the field after due consideration of all relevant factors including safety issues, equal effort will result in equal playing time. By ensuring that all players are fairly and equally treated, we are confident that playing baseball at DPYB will be a positive, exciting experience for everyone. DPYB strives to be a leader in maintaining a competitive program with rules that provide balanced playing time that develop the skills of players at all levels of playing ability.”
Instruction Goals for each division: What the league tries to teach each player.
Article will appear soon.
How is PONY Baseball different
from Little League Baseball? The primary features that distinguish PONY Baseball from Little League Baseball are the use of a two-year age bracket system and scaled diamonds. Additionally, PONY teaches lead-offs and base-stealing starting at age nine (Mustang division), while pitchers learn pick-off moves and holding runners on base to counter the potential steal. In organizations such as Little League players can differ by as much as three years within a division. As a result, the younger players, because of their lack of maturity, ability, and size find it hard to communicate with the older players. Generally they find themselves spending a disproportionate amount of time on the bench and may feel disconnected from their team. With players of only two ages involved, as is the case with PONY Baseball, it is far easier to permit every player to play more positions since the difference in skills within the age group is not that great. The game of baseball cannot be played as it was intended to be played if the physical capability of the players does not match the physical achievements required for the game.
Little League uses only two diamond sizes: Up until age 12 players play on a 60-foot diamond with a pitching distance of 46 feet. At age 13 the diamond size increases to 90 feet and a pitching distance of 60 feet, 6 inches ..... a 14 foot, 6 inch increase in pitching distance and 30 foot base path increase in ONE year! PONY Baseball, on the other hand, scales the size of their diamonds to match the physical capabilities of the players within each division.
The base and pitching dimensions for PONY Baseball are: 50-foot bases for Shetland (5-6 year-olds) 50-foot bases and 38-foot pitching for Pinto (7-8 year-olds) 60-foot bases and 44-foot pitching for Mustang (9-10 year-olds) 70-foot bases and 48-foot pitching for Bronco (11-12 year-olds) 80-foot bases and 54-foot pitching for Pony (13-14 year-olds) 90-foot bases and 60-1/2-foot pitching for Colt/Palamino (15-16,17-18 year-olds)
- Colt and Palomino are not offered by DPYB -
These base dimensions are the result of extensive experimentation to determine the size on which players of each age group can properly play the game of baseball. Pitching distance is also scaled to the ability of the player in proportion to the size of the diamond. The scaled down diamonds allow the players to make the plays made by the major leaguers. Home runs become a possibility. Outfielders can play in a position proportionately equal to that played by a major leaguer. The double play, squeeze play, and various strategy tactics, difficult for adults and nearly impossible for youngsters on a full size diamond, become a probability rather than an impossibility.
·Dana Point Youth Baseball's local playing rules include the requirement that every player must play at least half of the game defensively, and they must play two of the first four innings.
·Additionally, the entire roster bats in order-not just the 9 players on the field.
·Pitchers are allowed to pitch only two innings per game in Mustang while Bronco & Pony divisions allow four innings in one game (with 40 hours of rest required before next pitching appearance) and seven innings in a week. This protects the player's arm and forces the development of more pitchers. Finally, during the drafting of teams at all levels (except Shetland) no players are "protected" and placed with any particular team.
Every team is drafted new every season,
there are no dynasty teams that win year after year.

The Dana Point Summer Classic
Invitational Baseball Tournament The Dana Point Summer Classic Invitational Baseball Tournament is a segregated "A" & "B" All-Star team tournament.
This means "A" teams will only play "A" teams and "B" teams will only play "B" teams.
Same for 13 and 14 year old Pony Division teams.
The DP Classic Baseball Tournament generally occurs during the last week in June. We plan our tournament for the time slot between the first Pre-All-Star Pony Tournaments (e.g., St. Hedwig's and Placentia) of the post-season
and the start of the actual Pony District All-Star play. As a result, the actual start date of the DP Classic varies year-to-year based on the previous tournaments' end date(s).
Projected dates for the 2009 DP Classic are: June 17th to June 28th. 2008: June 20th to June 30th
2007: June 22nd to July 1st 2006: June 23rd to July 2nd 2005: June 22nd to July 1st 2004: June 24th to July 2nd
Please note that date ranges can expand or contract based on the number of teams that enter our tournament.

Play-By-Play Announcer Read about our new Scholarship Fund named in honor of Gene Burrus Click here to view details
Good Afternoon,
Players, Parents, Grandparents
and welcome to the Del Obispo Fields!
That is how the announcer starts and
not just any announcer, it’s our own Gene Burrus.
That’s right ours. Just after a few regular season games
and the Dana Point Summer Classic this man has entered our collective hearts and become part of DPYB.
After each game, comments and thank yous expressed would make you think a career professional had called the play-by-play action. Well, in fact, it had. Gene’s broadcasting career spans five decades, starting in 1952 with radio station, KRUX, Glendale, Arizona. His TV career began in 1958 with a local station in Phoenix, Arizona. This was a time for those old enough to remember, a broadcaster on both radio and tv did everything from grand openings of appliance stores to announcing the day’s headlines. And Gene did, he handled sports reports, commercials, weather, anchor news, interviews and even a dance show or two.
In 1964 he came back to California, where after World War II he had received his education in broadcasting at the Radio Engineering School in Burbank. His career moved from KCMJ, Palm Springs to KCOP, Los Angeles, where he served as a director and was in charge of video tape editing and syndication. Starting in 1974, he worked at several stations, including KOCM, Newport Beach. For ten years, ending with his retirement in 1986, Gene served as a public address announcer at the Tournament of Roses Parade.
With his gracious wife, Gladys, Gene moved to Dana Point in 1986. He now handles everything from Master of Ceremonies duties at Dana Point’s Whale Festival Parade to calling bingo games at our Senior Center. At age 82, these volunteer assignments give him great satisfaction and to us, the players, parents, grandparents of DPYB the joy of hearing our own play-by-play announcer. Gene Burrus.
If you would like to volunteer to be a play-by-play announcer for DPYB games please contact: René 'aka_papa' Cortez Director of Communications
Privacy Policy and COPPA Law:
Dana Point Youth Baseball adopts eteamz's Privacy Policy as noted below and on eteamz's (active.com's) website.
eteamz also recommends that you share our brief Information for Kids! bulletin with your children so they understand how to be safe on the Internet and why we are asking for parental permission in certain instances.
Why must people register when trying to post a message to the guestbook or accessing other areas of the site?
Our registration helps to ensure anyone under the age of 13 receives parental permission. This registration is in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's ruling for COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act).
Whether playing, shopping, studying or just surfing, today's kids are taking advantage of all that the Web has to offer. But when it comes to their personal information online, who's in charge? In an effort to put parents in the driver's seat, the Federal Trade Commission has established new rules for Website operators to make sure that kids' privacy is protected while they're online. These rules, which went into effect on April 21, 2000, are part of the 1998 Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
The law requires that Website operators post comprehensive privacy policies on their sites, notify parents about their information practices, and obtain parental consent before collecting any personal information from children under the age of 13 or allowing kids under 13 to publicly post personal information such as on web pages, bulletin boards or chat rooms without their parent's consent. For kids, this means that they will not have free reign of all that the Web has to offer, unless their parent provides consent.
Basically, the law was enacted not to restrict Web operators from providing services and capturing useful data, but to restrict kids from releasing information about themselves that could allow a stranger to contact them.
