Peel 2-3 Old Boys

THE Sure Mobile Premier League got off to a cracking start at Douglas Road on Saturday as second division champions Old Boys upset the odds by recording a remarkable victory with two late goals against Peel.

Those two strikes completed a sensational comeback as the opening half had been dominated by the westerners — and had it not been for some woeful finishing the game could well have been wrapped up by the interval.

The home side were soon into their stride and an early effort from Tony Duggan was well saved by goalkeeper Sam Holliday before Daniel Lace fired the rebound wide of the target.

Moments later Kerron Christian looked to have given Rick Holden's team the lead, only to see Holliday produce a remarkable save from point-blank range.

However, on 16 minutes Peel did take the lead when Kevin Megson rifled home a cleverly taken free-kick with Holliday seemingly rooted to the spot.

At the other end it took the visitors 34 minutes to produce their first meaningful effort, Robbie Ward firing a well-struck drive fractionally wide.

Soon after the restart the game appared to be going very much to plan for the home side as Duggan took full advantage of a collision between defender and keeper to double the lead.

Then out of the blue came a lifeline for Old Boys in the shape of the best goal of the game.

Substitute Gary Quirk let fly with a 25-yard volley that screamed into the far top corner of the net, giving Peel keeper Grant Dawson no chance at all on his league debut for the club.

However, Peel were still creating chances and substitute Juan Killip forced a fine save from Holliday.

But in the closing stages the visitors began to look dangerous on the break and were rewarded when Sean Gavin chased down a loose ball before turning to cross for Paul Murphy to equalise.

The newly promoted side were suddenly on top and when the Peel defence failed to clear their lines Callum Stewart pounced to drill home the winner, triggering scenes of wild excitement.

OLD BOYS
Sam Holliday, Mark Burman, Darren Hudgeon (Gary Quirk 55m), Steve Clarke, Paul Murphy, Michael Hooper, Callum Stewart, Craig Stewart, Sean Gavin, Robbie Ward (Liam Buckley 65m), Jamie Cain (John Quirk 30m).
