NJ District 3 Little League: For Managers & Coaches

LITTLE LEAGUE UNIVERSITY

Little League® Baseball and Softball has launched the online destination of its new training and education platform, Little League University. LittleLeagueU.org is designed to transform the way volunteers, league and district administrators, coaches, and parents experience learning about the Little League program.

“Empowering Little League volunteers with the most robust training and education available can only better their experience in the program, and the experiences of children around the world,” said Stephen D. Keener, Little League President and CEO. “The vision of Little League University is to create a welcoming environment, where all of our constituents can come to learn at their own pace. Valuing the limited time of today’s volunteers, the arrangement and assortment of information on Little League U is designed to be user-friendly, easily shared, and thorough, but by no means overwhelming.”

LittleLeagueU.org connects volunteers to engaging training videos and informative how-to articles, designed to educate users on the best practices for operating and enjoying a successful local Little League. The content on LittleLeagueU.org will be updated consistently throughout the year to ensure that all volunteers have the information they need on relevant topics.  Read More...

COACH'S / MANAGER'S ROLE
The Little League® manager and coach must be leaders. All must recognize that they hold a position of trust and responsibility in a program that deals with a sensitive and formative period of a child’s development. It is required that the manager and coach have understanding, patience and the capacity to work with children. The manager and coach should be able to inspire respect. Above all else, managers and coaches must realize that they are helping to shape the physical, mental and emotional development of young people Read More...

LEARN ABOUT ARM SAFETY THROUGH LITTLE LEAGUE® AND THE PITCH SMART PROGRAM
Little League® has always placed safety as a top priority, and is continually striving to provide children with healthy and safe baseball and softball opportunities. For nearly a decade, the Little League program has been at the forefront of promoting arm safety for youth pitchers. As we continue to work to make baseball a safe, fun sport for all children, Little League is proudly supporting the efforts of Major League Baseball and USA Baseball through the Pitch Smart campaign.

TEE BALL DIVISION

In 2013, Little League® created a new program for Tee Ball players (ages 4-6) that is specifically designed to provide a foundation and introduction to baseball and softball that is grounded in fun, fitness and fundamentals.

The Little League® Tee Ball program is a 10-week plan that features structured learning highlighted by one practice and one game per week. Over the course of the season, coaches and parents will engage in a series of lessons utilizing up to 40 activities that include skills, drills and plenty of physical activity.

A great resource for a first-time or veteran coach, Little League’s Tee Ball program includes:

  • Detailed practice plans for each week of the 10-week program
  • Quick practice plans for each week of the 10-week program
  • Activity Guides explaining each drill and activity in detail

POSITIVE COACHING ALLIANCE (PCA) RESOURCES

Since 2006, Little League® has partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to provide a framework and tools for local Little League volunteers to develop a culture of positive, character-building competition. Recently, Little League extended this partnership to include relevant information for the Little League Coach and the Little League Parent, with the addition of a FREE Little League Parent quick-course. This quick-course provides a framework to be a powerful sports parent from the stands.

The following information provides you a framework. You will learn the basics building a positive, character-developing culture. What do we mean by “culture”? Most simply, “culture” is the way “WE do things HERE.” For example, in one Little League, the “way we do things here” ensures that all players shake hands with all umpires after games. In another Little League, “the way we do things here” mandates that all players cheer the opposing team in a post-game chant.

  • Second-Goal Parent: Just as Little League Double-Goal Coaches have two goals -- winning, and more importantly, teaching life lessons through baseball and softball -- Little League and Positive Coaching Alliance aim for “Second-Goal” Parents, who are focused on the “second goal” of helping children take life lessons from sports.

  • Little League Double-Goal Coach®: Little League Double-Goal Coaches have two goals, winning, and more importantly, teaching life lessons through baseball and softball. Double-Goal Coach takes its name from a book by PCA Founder and Executive Director Jim Thompson and is the inspiration for the online Little League Double-Goal Coach Course.
