Overview of Cumberland / North Yarmouth Youth Lacrosse
We recognize that the sport of lacrosse is just a means to an end of teaching each player some life skills and getting some exercise.
We take several steps to help kids develop an appreciation for the game and the skills needed to succeed.
- The teams are set up into separate Boy's and Girl's teams. There are different rules to the Boys and Girls games of lacrosse. Our format of using separate teams allows the kids to learn the game safely.
- We try to keep the player-to-coach ratio as low as possible to provide more individual attention to those that are new to the sport as well as develop more advanced skills for players who demonstrate proficiency of the basics.
- Each player gets equal playing time and an equal opportunity to play each position.
- At the younger level, our games are not scored. At all levels, there are no league standings and we emphasize sportsmanship in practicing and playing the game.
We Need Coaches and Program Administrators
Our boys and girls program are run with the dedication of our volunteer coaches and administrators. If you would like to join us helping to run the program, there is an immediate need for Coaches and Board Members. Any parent or fan of the program is eligible to help. Where do I get Lacrosse equipment?
Leading manufacturers of lacrosse equipment include: Brine, Gait/DeBeer, Harrow, STX, and Warrior. All of their gear is of high quality and adequate for youth lacrosse. Complete starter packages are available to get you going at a reasonable price. Used equipment is fine. Equipment can be used from one year to the next, provided it fits. Sticks, which need to be at least 40 inches in total length, can be used for as long as your son or daughter can throw and catch with it. Feel free to ask the coaches for guidance.
Local places to purchase equipment are: LaxPros is a specialty shop located in Portland and is staffed with lacrosse experts, Play it Again Sports (Portland), Dick's Sporting Goods (Maine Mall), and The Sports Authority (Maine Mall).
There are many online suppliers. Some good ones are: Lax Underground, Great Atlantic and especially for girls, Longstreth. Looking for gear on Ebay is also an option, though we would suggest you stick to new or like new gear or pay an absurdly low price for what you are buying so that you minimize the risk of getting something that isn't of good useful quality.
We recommend new lacrosse parents buy equipment in person, particularly used gear, to make certain of the fit.
