Meet Our young Running Back MARTRAY LITTLEJOHN
w12-06_ 157
JR.Martray LittleJohn had been sharing the Charger RB position with another running back ever since he came to Crest High School. Things changed recently and now he is the "key go to guy" for the 2003 Crest Charger Team's running game. A young man with a lot of heart and the desire to run the football, Martray had right at 800 yards rushing during the regular 2002 season. Based on the stats provided by Penz we are showing him @ 120 carries for 759 yards and 8 TD's with an average of 6.3 yards per carry. Our stats are not the offical stats but we feel like they are very close to the offical stats. Martray finished out the 2001 season being bought up from Jv's during the playoff chase, and was the featured RB against Ragsdale in the 4th round due to Padgett being out with a sprained ankle and the loss of SR.RB,Phillip Shaw during the last regular season game.

A young man to watch and enjoy wearing Green and Gold!!!!!!

Video provided by Mr.Primetime

On 12/06/2003 @ The State 3AA Championship game Martray Littlejohn became the leading rusher for Crest High School by breaking Josh Browns record set in 2000. Martray Littlejohn set a new season rushing record with 1993 yards.

2003 STARTS WITH A BANG !!!!!!!!!!!
g2-12
Well once again our season starts with excitement. Our kids are excited and have been working hard in the off season, couple guys are benching over 350lbs with others pushing 300lbs and they all have been working hard. Our RB's have been working hard with one of them proving he is one of the fastest in the land. We have some new Coaching Staff members with guys willing to put in the 30 plus hours a week after school and on weekends to help our boys win. Our Head Coach has been forced to make a tuff call the first day by making a decision to remove a kid that was being groomed as the starter from the team. You may see talk about it on the message boards, but remember our Crest Charger Team is like a family and " a FAMILY is at the center of life's MEANING.Individuals linked together by a Golden chain of love, FAMILY celebrates triumphs and shares adversities across Generations and across the miles. Like a never ending HUG, FAMILY encircles each member with steadfast DEVOTION and enduring LOVE. FAMILY is belonging to and believing in Each Other!!!!!!!!"

Red Raider Bringin' it !!!

South Point showed that they were for real in 2003 with signs of a very balanced football team. Coming off two years of getting beat by the Chargers the Senior's that have played the past two years had something to prove. Being Senior night at South Point the win was a good one for them.

The Chargers show signs of improvements as our young QB seemed able to move the football at times only to be disappointed with a fumble or Mis-Q on a couple of good drives.

Chargers roll over Indians
The names of the players may change year to year but the result doesn’t when Crest meets St. Stephens on the football field.

The Chargers battered St. Stephens, 63-3, Friday night in Southwestern Foothills 3A Conference action. It’s likely, though, the host Indians will remember the name of Crest freshman Jordan Robinson.

Giving Littlejohn a break .........If that weren’t enough, the St. Stephens defense was literally seeing double in the second half. That’s because the Chargers got three rushing touchdowns by Tyrice Brooks and another by his identical twin, Maurice.

Alan Ford's article on the Game 09/05/2003

In a rivalry that’s produced a lot of great football the past 25 years, it’s an all-or-nothing proposition.

Players, coaches and fans pulling for either side expect to lay it all on the field and walk away with either a victory, or the other extreme. There’s no middle ground.

That’s why it was appropriate that 6,000-plus fans were on the their feet with less than a minute and a half to play at Charger Stadium Friday night. There was no going for a tie. It was win or else.

2003 Crest Charger Team.............
g2-17
Local Rival night with Fans everywhere !
Billybob's thoughts on the current years team.
Having overcome early problems that many teams couldn't this crop of young Chargers are showing up as another special team that the school should be very proud of. For the past few years we have seen examples of how these kids overcome adversities like 09/11 or the Senior RB Phillip Shaw getting his leg broken during the last regular season game in 2001, key players involved in an automobile accident just days of post season action in 2002 to losing a few players like the 2003 season started.

Sometimes as fans we get so interested in the 10-0 season that we overlook what High School Sports are all about, building character, building confidence, building community leaders for tomorrow. Each and every team that has come through the system has these players. It may start with the Trainers, the Scout team players that get the starters ready, the Star Running Backs or QuarterBacks, the O-line men or the D-fence.......the Local Star's that go off to college to play ball, the kids that may attend local community college and works part time, or enters the work force right out of High School, the kids that go off to serve in our Armed Forces in these troubled times....to the kids that go off to College to learn how to Teach, Coach, or work and have input in our community. Our stands are full of these people.

As we enter the 4th week of the 2003 playoffs the Crest Chargers are fielding a team that the whole Crest Community can be proud of..........and the Crest Charger Fans are there on Friday nights to show these kids they are.

Crest head coach Roy Kirby named AP Coach of the Year
RALEIGH (AP) — The biggest moment of Roy Kirby’s life came when his wife gave birth to a son in August 2002.

Leading Crest through a tumultuous season to win a state championship was a close second.

After an 0-3 start and the dismissal of 12 players from the team, Kirby led Crest to 12 straight wins and its first state title since 1996. For his efforts, Kirby was named the 2003 Associated Press coach of the year by a panel of North Carolina journalists on Friday.

Kirby earned 13 of 28 votes, beating out Charlotte Independence’s Tom Knotts. Knotts earned seven votes after the Patriots (16-0) won their fourth consecutive state title and pushed their three-year winning streak to 62 games.

SHELBY — Moments after defeating Eastern Randolph 40-0 to win the state 3AA championship, members of Crest’s football team were already wearing championship T-shirts and hats.

The shirts were not made at an on-site printing unit that began to print the apparel after Crest began to run away with the game. Instead, the apparel was designed weeks in advance by a Crest graduate to show his support for the team.

“I’m a big fan of football — Crest football and high school football in general,” said Marty Bradley, who owns Bradley’s Trophies and Engraving.

Bradley’s company is producing the championship apparel the team wore at Kenan Stadium Saturday and that went on sale Monday at the school. For about two weeks, fans can purchase T-shirts for $12, long-sleeved shirts for $15, sweatshirts for $20 and hats for $15.

The money raised from the sale will go toward purchasing championship rings for the team.

County football teams prepare for tough playoff foes....2003
crest-hickory 028sm
First Game Photo 2003 by Mr Primetime
Shelby Star News report by Randy Capps, Sports Writer,
If familiarity breeds contempt, then the bad blood is a brewing in Hickory and at Crest this week as the Chargers and Red Tornadoes are headed for their second meeting of the season on Friday night at Charger Stadium.

The two teams met in the Southwest Foothills 3A conference opener on Sept. 19, a 21-8 Crest victory. Neither team has tasted defeat since. The fact that the Chargers are facing an opponent for the second time this season is not good news for Crest coach Roy Kirby.

“I’ve never liked playing somebody twice,” Kirby said. “If you win the first one, then you have to worry about the kids overlooking them — not that our kids are. They know a little bit more about us, as far as matchups go, but in the playoffs you have to play who they say.”

The Red Tornadoes (10-2) are a run-first bunch, lead by tailback Kejuan Wright and fullback Paul Martin. It’s unlikely that Hickory will look much different when they visit Crest (8-3) on Friday night.

“They’re doing a lot of the same things,” Kirby said. “They’re still 75-25 (percent) run-pass. When you’ve won 10 games, why change?”

Crest reached the second round by holding off T.C. Roberson, 26-7, while the Red Tornadoes nipped Piedmont, 23-15.

“We knew T.C. was tough, but they surprised us a little with their quickness,” Kirby said. “It took us a little while to adjust to it.”

Playoff football isn’t always about excellence.

Neither Crest nor Hickory had lost a game since the Chargers beat the Red Tornadoes, 21-8, at Charger Stadium on Sept. 19.

Crest still hasn’t.

The Charger defense posted its fourth shutout of the season with a 19-0 home victory over Hickory (10-3) in the second round of the 3AA state playoffs on Friday night.

With the victory, Crest will travel to top-seeded Winston-Salem Parkland, 6-0 winners over Glenn on Friday night, next week.

Chargers advance to semifinals with 13-12 win over Parkland

Give me the chance Coach !!!!!!......and it came to pass !!!!!
Randy Capps,Star Sports Writer

WINSTON-SALEM — On paper, the third-round playoff game between Crest and Winston-Salem Parkland figured to be a defensive battle.

It was that and then some.

A 20-yard Arik Lemmon field goal with seven minutes remaining propelled the Chargers into the 3AA Western Finals next with a 13-12 victory at Deaton-Thompson Stadium on Friday night.

Crest will host High Point Central, 9-6 overtime winners over Ashbrook, next Friday.

Lemmon’s field goal, his second of the night, came after an epic 22-play drive that took nearly 10 minutes off the clock in the third and fourth quarters.

“We came out and won the third quarter,” Crest head coach Roy Kirby said. “What a drive, what a drive. That was it right there. Their defense got tired, we got the three points — and that was huge.

"Dee-Fense!" an important word for Chargers
goin to the HILL sign
Dee-fense !!!!!!!
Alan Ford, Sports Editor,

It’s one part of football that everyone recognizes.

At some key moment in the game, half the people in the stadium are on their feet chanting in unison — and with plenty of feeling — a word that carries a bit of magic: “Dee-fense! Dee-fense!”

You can bet the Crest defensive unit hears the crowd. More importantly, they respond to it.

“You know you’ve just got to make a play,” said Charger sophomore linebacker Brandon Spikes. “We know if the defense plays well, we win.”

The numbers bear that out.

"I credit that to (Ragsdale running back) Toney Baker - after playing him two times, it helped eliminate long runs with good pursuit angles," Cates said. "In the Eastern finals, it's hard to stop a team that good on fourth-and-1. That shows the heart of the team."

CHAPEL HILL — The beauty of high school football is no matter how many games you watch, every time you walk into a stadium you could be completely surprised.

The 3AA State Championship game in Kenan Stadium was one of those occasions.

The Crest offense exploded for 34 first-half points en route to a 40-0 victory over Eastern Randolph on Saturday night.

It is Crest’s third state title since 1994, and the first for Crest head coach Roy Kirby.

“I’ve been waiting for them to explode like they did today,” Kirby said. “We knew Eastern Randolph had a great defense, but our offense put it together today.

“We played all three phases of the game.”

Any doctor will tell you that taking a shower in ice-cold water outdoors in near-freezing temperatures is not good for one’s health.

So if Crest head coach Roy Kirby — who was on the receiving end of such a shower on Friday night — has the sniffles next week, at least he can take solace in the fact that he’s playing for a state title next week.

The Crest Chargers (11-3) advanced to their second North Carolina 3AA State Championship in the last three years with a 14-6 win over High Point Central on Friday night at Charger Stadium. Crest will face Eastern Randolph (14-0) at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill next Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — You didn’t have to believe in pre-destination to see this one coming.

Crest, looking every bit a defending state champion, dissected host Kings Mountain with chilling efficiency Friday night at John Gamble Stadium. The Chargers (5-1, 2-0 SWFH) scored on eight consecutive possessions and battered the Mountaineers to the tune of 54-0.

The first quarter told everyone all they needed to know about the contest. The Chargers thoroughly erased any drama about the outcome in the first 12 minutes as they:

n built a 10-1 edge in first downs;

n established a 169-9 edge in yardage

n and most importantly, led 20-0 on the scoreboard.

Crest’s huge offensive line continually blasted huge holes in the Kings Mountain defensive front to give the heralded running back tandem of Martray Littlejohn and Travis Padgett plenty of daylight. Padgett would run for 125 yards on the night and Littlejohn 110. It’s the third time the duo have both topped the 100-yard mark in the same game.

“I thought our offensive line really played well,” said Charger coach Roy Kirby. “The extra week off really helped us. We were able to put in some more things on both sides of the ball. We were able to work more on having both of them (Littlejohn and Padgett) out there together.”

Quarterback Maurice Gullatte would throw for an additional 114 yards and two scores to stir the offensive recipe for the blowout win.

“A good thing was Jordan Robinson was able to come in and run the offense just like Gullatte,” Kirby said. “He’s been throwing it great in practice and we got him two quarters in there.”

Burns head coach Ron Greene is 150-90 in his tenure at Burns, good for the most wins at Burns High and the third most wins in the county. Crest’s Roy Kirby moved past the man he replaced at Crest, Mike Stewart, this season for the fifth spot in the county win total with a record of 87-18. That mark is also tops at Crest High. Shelby head coach Chris Norman ranks seventh all-time with a 73-21-1 record. They’re all chasing Shelby coaches Jim Taylor (201-54-2) and Gerald Allen (173-48-13).
