Comments in the local paper made by Seniors on the 2001 Team during playoff chase:
While Crest has only surrendered 131 points in 2001, Parkland's 4-3 defensive scheme has surrendered 228 points in 15 games.
Chance Witherspoon,RG the week of the game:
The way the Chargers attack the Mustang defense is going to be key, said senior offensive lineman Chance Witherspoon.
"For us to win, the offensive line is going to have to do its job," Witherspoon said. "If we execute the plays, we're going to score. If we execute, it's going to create holes for our running backs to score and it's going to give (quarterback) Brandon (Boone) time to throw the ball."
Brandon Boone,QB the week of the game:
Making it to Chapel Hill has been a lifelong goal for these Chargers, who were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round the three previous years. Boone said the moment he walks onto the Kenan Stadium field he knows one thing - he's not going to need a motivational speech to get fired up.
"I'm going to be jacked and I know I'm not going to be able to quit smiling," Boone said.
Maurice Petty,WR the week of the game:
Petty said, "You're going to see a smile from ear-to-ear on my face." ........(and we are still proud of you guys !!!!!!!! BillyBob)
Brandon Jefferies,LG the week we played Ragsdale:
It's a good opportunity for us to show off our talent," he said. "We can show everyone around the state that we play pretty good football down here. The big thing this week is to be focused and step up and protect our quarterback."
Jeff Allen,RT After High Point Central
game'
"We finally came out and showed we wanted to win," said Charger senior offensive tackle Jeff Allen. "We knew we were going to come back. And Travis back there, he's a good little runner."
Coach Kirby remark about the d-fence during the first part of the season:
"They're sort of a no-name group," said Crest head coach Roy Kirby of his defense. "Everybody knew our offense was going to be something good and our defense graduated eight seniors."
(The Chargers have only surrendered 94 points in its 11 games this season - and 28 of those came in a 20-point win over Burns. Only three times this season have Crest opponents scored in double-digits. Opponents have only rushed for 998 yards (90.7 per game) against Crest, while two Charger running backs have already broken that mark.)
Dustin Morehead, LT: talking abbout Anson County during the Playoff Chase
"Last year, they wanted us pretty bad and we kind of looked over them," said senior offensive lineman Dustin Morehead. "We've had a week off and I think it gave us an extra week to get us even more fired up."
Johnny Laughead, LB: the week of the Anson County Playoff game:
"All I had to do was watch the video of last year's game and it motivated me," said senior linebacker Johnny Laughhead. "We are so ready for Anson. I watched the hard work that last year's seniors put in and it made me want to strive to work hard."
The State was played late due to the problem in 3A ball with North Gaston:
With the start of the playoffs moved back one week, the 3A state championship game has also been moved to Friday, Dec. 22 - only three days before Christmas. Kirby, who said he is squarely focused on the Anson game plan and is not even considering the championship scenario, said his team wouldn't mind playing a few days before the holiday.
But Kirby said there would be one faction of Chargers that wouldn't like the idea of playing 72 hours before Christmas.
"Our coach's wives won't like it too much," Kirby said with a laugh. "But I think it would be a great Christmas present to go down there and get a state championship. But we have a lot to do before then."

JR Class ,Keenan Little,CB reflected the feelings of a lot of the Chargers during the year :
"I knew I had to do something to get our defense going. God gave me strength to play well tonight."
Each week when the Chargers travel out of town a few local Church Groups fed the boys before the road trip started, among these are, Double Springs Baptist, Mt Sinai Baptist, Boiling Springs Batist, Green Bethel Bapist, Beaver Dam Bapist, Popular Springs Bapist, and others located near Crest High School.
Each night after a game the group kneels in prayer.

Brian Hanks Shelby Star Reporter insight of the game played 09/14/2001 :
"I had heard of the great football rivalries over here in Cleveland County but I got my first real taste of it at Friday's big Shelby-Crest game. At 6:45 p.m., a full 45 minutes before the game was set to start, there wasn't a seat in the stands available in Crest Stadium.
As I stood on the field during pre-game ceremonies, which included the moving rendition of "God Bless America" from the Crest Chamber Choir and the national anthem by the combined Shelby and Crest bands, I had a chance to look at the assembled crowd.
WHAT I witnessed among the fans was moving. Cheerleaders holding hands, children saluting the flag and old men wiping away tears are the main things I remember seeing before the teams took the field. Walking up through the stands to the press box prior to the start of the game, I saw people hugging and it made me realize that the decision to play on Friday - in light of the awful destruction and pain that had taken place last week - was the correct one."

That's why Crest doesn't get to play a football game tonight in the State 3A playoffs. The stench coming from the situation at North Gaston High is blowing across western North Carolina and will have repercussions.
Chargers take 17-0 victory in defensive duel
The Crest offense - averaging over 44 points and nearly 460 yards of offense per game - has been drawing raves all season.
After the Chargers' 17-0 whitewash of Kings Mountain on Friday night, it's time to give the Crest defense some kudos.

Crest pounds Foard 70-6
The only question anyone in attendance really had was how many points the Chargers would rack up against the 1-8 Foard Tigers. For the second straight week Crest set a school record for points against Catawba County opposition - scoring 63 the previous week against St. Stephens - and easily marched to its eighth consecutive victory.

Thurman to be anchor of Chargers' defense
Shelby Star
Date: 8/23/00
Comments
Drew Loftis Star Sports Writer
Most of the hubbub surrounding the Crest Chargers' football squad under coach Roy Kirby is enjoyed by the high-flying, high-scoring offense. It often allows people to overlook the Charger defense.
Middle linebacker Donnie Thurman is going to do everything he can to make sure that doesn't happen this season.
"Offense wins games, but defenses win championships," said the Crest senior. "The offense can get the glory all year. But the defense will have to be there to win a championship. That's when it gets its glory."
The linebacker is also an exceptional student. Thurman is President of the North Carolina Beta Club and serves as Vice President of the club at a national level. He is also a member of the National Honors Society.

Crest Team rocked again by auto accident...but these guys...
Were lucky !!!!!! I was called about 1:00 PM today by my wife and advised of the accident. Since I was in Lincolnton in a business meeting I broke away and went to Charlotte to Carolina Medical Center. I was being told of Montaze Thurmans condition by friends that were in touch with folks that knew and I was expecting the worst when I got there. At this time I was understanding that Carlos Washington had also been hurt and had at least one broken leg, but he was still at the Shelby Hospital. When I got to the hospital and found the Thurman family I was a little more at eaze. After talking with them for about 30 minutes and telling them to have faith in the Lord to bring them though this trauma the Doctor came into the family waiting room. The news was great for this family. The MRI showed some bruised spots on his brain, and he would be in the trauma unit overnight. Barring any swelling on the brain and discovery of other injuries he would probally be out in a couple days. I left the hospital about 4:30......with this news.
Making calls to the Booster Club Prez who was sharing information he had obtained I found out that four kids where in the car. Carlos Washington, Javarius Spikes , and Patrick Stroud.(I believe the last two names are correct but not sure.)I was also made aware of this from telephone calls the family recieved while I was at the hospital that Carlos and Patrick had some serious injuries but not life threating and were suppose to be transported to Charlotte.
All three of the boys were transported by mobile ambulance instead of air. Carlos was suppose to be coming and was expected to be at Charlotte at this time.
I did not see any of the other families and came on back to Boiling Springs. On the trip back I called the waiting room again about 5:15. Since Trauma would open if possible at 5:00 PM for the family to visit. I was advised that the Thurmans had seen their son, and that Sid Bryson,AD and Mr.Harris,Principal were there. Carlos and Paul had also arrived and were being prepared for surgery.
I have just finished talking with the Thurman family again at about 8:45 PM and Carlos and Patrick are now in surgery. Carlos has sustained compound fractures of both legs and Patrick is suppose to have a fracture in his neck area. We will try and keep you informed on this as information comes in.
The accident happen on West Zion Church road just minutes from Montaze's home. His mother and some family members had given me some insight about the accident scene since they made it there before the boys were transported.
After coming back to the JV game tonight I found out that there was another car involved and it appears that somehow the two cars hit and the automobile the boys were riding in ran off the road and hit a ditch and flipped. The 4th passenger in the auto has been released with minor cuts and scraps.
At this time these families need your prayers, it appears that they are not in any major danger. However I am not a Doctor. I remain guarded on all three boys condition and expect the best for them. God has once again been good in providing a guardian angel for these boys!!!!!!!!!!
(added 10/25/2002) According to Coach Kirby this morning Carlos was out of surgery when he called at 1:00 am and everything went OK.

Carlos and Montaze were both at the Game.
Carlos got to ride around in the Charger Cart and Montaze was also at the game I believe standing on the sideline with the team.
I was able to talk with Carlos after the game and had a chance to ask him what his insight on the game was and this is what he said, "I wish Montaze and me were able to be out there tonight, it might have made a differences but I'm proud of the guys in how they came together!"

Crest and South Point is NCPreps game of the week !
According to Fearless Freddie this should be the game to see this week.
added 09/21/2002 12:05 am Billybob's brief thoughts on the game.
I don't thank that the hype to this game was overstated prior. The game started off 4 in and 4 out for the o-fence of both teams. The Chargers got on the score board first and at half time the score was 14-0.
As a Charger Fan I would like to think that the score could have been 28-0 first half. A couple of missed passes hurt in the first half. But unless it's on the score board, would, could, should and maybe's don't count.
When the second half started the Red Raiders came out to play and put 7 points on the board in about 2 minutes. Then the Chargers got mad and decided it was time to put the woman and children to bed. Final score 28-7.
During this game we saw both teams had good special teams that would hit you......................man what a pop on some of that punt coverage !!!!!!!!!!!.......I felt the hit up on the hill !!!!!!!
I felt like there were way to many yellow flags in the 4th especially after the 1st quarter having none. Did both teams change something ??? Hard for me to tell. But I do guestion a few calls.
Some stats from the game as found posted by Crest2000 on NCPreps.
Stats from the game:
Thurman: 161 yard receiving
Padgett 12 carries for 85 yards
Littlejohn had 9 carries for 43 yards
177 on ground for crest
lee completed 7 out of 14 for 208 and 1TD
crest had 325 yards total on offense
they also had 12 penalties for 145 yards
joe brown was big for south point with 21 carries for 109 yards.
I believe this game will battle test both of these teams for the playoff's as their regular season continues.

Smashmouth5's Take on the Burns Game
The number 1 ranked Crest Chargers and the number 5 ranked Burns Bulldogs stepped on the field of battle Friday night and played a game that lived up to the hype as the Chargers won 13-12. The crowd of between 8,000 and 10,000 saw two teams leave everything they had on the field at Crest Stadium. The Chargers won the toss and then took the ball and marched 81 yards on mostly running plays. Travis Lee picked up the first score on a two yard QB keeper and Daniel Padgett was able to connect on what turned out to be a huge extra point and the Chargers were up 7-0. After a turnover in the 2nd quarter Burns got the ball and took it 47 yards. Troy Goss put Burns on the board with a six yard run, but the extra point was blocked and Crest led 7-6. That was all of the scoring we would see in the first half. The 3rd quarter saw the Chargers trail for the first time all year as Goss completed a 5 yard touchdown pass to Josh Briscoe. Burns then went for the 2 point conversion which was no good. This put Burns up 12-7. So how would the Chargers respond being behind? They got the ball back and 4 plays later had the lead once again thanks to a 35 yard touchdown scamper by Travis Padgett. The Chargers then elected to go for 2 themselves. The attempt was no good and the Chargers led 13-12. Crest was able to put the game away in the 4th with an impressive drive that saw Crest pick up first down after first down, the biggest play being a reception by Jermaine Strong on third and long to keep the drive alive. Both teams defenses did a great job of slowing down two high powered offenses. Travis Padgett led Crest in the rushing department with 156 yards. Travis Lee had 73, Martray Littlejohn had 16, and Brandon McEntyre chipped in with 3, Travis Lee completed 3 passes for 56 yards, 17 of them being to,Jermaine Strong, 26 to Gene Proctor, and 13 to the returning Tyrone Thompson. Burns was led on the ground by Troy Goss. Goss picked up 81 yards rushing, and Nelson Woods added 66. Goss completed 7 passes for 95 yards. Most of those were to Josh Briscoe who picked up 74 of them. Orlando Goolsby added 15 and Jason Lawson had 10. Crest stays perfect on the year as they move to 9-0. Burns drops it's first game of the year and move to 9-1. Both teams have one game left before the playoffs as Burns tangles with St. Stephens and Crest will go after a third straight undefeated season as they host RS Central.

Round 2....Chargers played like they were on a mission
Billybob's take on the gameThe Chargers came out and played like a team on a mission. The first half was pretty equal with Crest moving the ball at will but not scoring anything big.TC Roberson came in as the underdog foe and for the first half they played like a dog that if left in the yard to long would begin to believe he was Top Dog. At the half the score was 14-10 but the Roberson team was showing signs of fatigue. Roberson was having to use to many players on both sides of the ball which would prove that you can't do this against a team like the Crest Charger team. In the 2nd half Crest opened up and put the game away in the 3rd and in the 4th Travis Lee's, little brother, Brandon Mauney took over the QB job.
Roberson was a good team but on this night they ran short of man power as the Chargers advanced on to round 3 against another SMC team, Ashville.

Chargers ram way past T.C. Roberson (2002)
By Michael Howard, Special to the Star
This time of year certain things seem inevitable.
Turkeys become an endangered species. Santa Claus sightings rise. The Crest Chargers play football on the Friday following Thanksgiving.
Crest eased by T.C. Roberson Friday night, 34-10, propelling the Chargers into the third round of the Upper 3A State playoffs. Crest (12-0) will host Asheville High in the third round.
After a somewhat sluggish first half that saw the Chargers lead 14-10, Crest dominated play from there. The Rams managed just six plays in the third quarter and only had four first downs in the second half all coming with the game out of reach. Theres one area Crest has a huge advantage against T.C. Roberson in the Upper 3A State playoffs Friday night at the Charger Stadium: Playoff experience.
Top-ranked Crest (11-0) has made it to the second round of the post-season 10 consecutive years. The Roberson Rams (8-3), out of the Mountain Athletic Conference, is in the state playoffs for only the fifth time in school history.
Still, after last weeks tougher-than expected 19-7 first-round duel with West Rowan, the Chargers arent taking anything for granted.
Theyre pretty good, theyre 8-3, said Crest coach Roy Kirby. They have speed. Like a lot of those mountain teams they are fundamentally sound. Double click on the headlines to be taken to the newpaper article.
