Monarch softball drops opener
Big innings lead to 9-2 loss to Pomona
By Lindsey LarsonColorado Hometown Newspapers

The Monarch softball team kicked off the 2009 season on Thursday, Aug. 27, with a 9-2 loss to Pomona High School. According to coach Rich Mott, the Coyotes fell victim to their old pattern of giving up big innings. In the third inning, Monarch gave up four runs and in the sixth the Panthers scored three times. The Coyotes struggled in the field, accumilating three errors.

“When you make mistakes, they can come back to bite you,” Mott said. “I think (this season) we will be stressing consistency.”

Pitcher Chrissy Lowe stayed on the mound for six innings, striking out eight batters and walking two.

Monarch did notch a home run courtesy of catcher Anna Dunn who hit one out over the right field fence with no one on in the fifth inning. But, Mott said, elsewhere in the lineup the bats just didn’t seem to make the cut for the Coyotes.

Next up, Monarch will face Stanley Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 2, before beginning the Boulder County Invitational tournament on Friday, Sept. 4. We’re going to get six games in this week,” Mott said. “That should help season our young ball club.”

Daily Camera Article - Monarch bests Boulder

Lowe edges Lejune-Stodieck in pitching duel

A solid outing by Boulder pitcher Anelise Lejune-Stodieck wasn't enough as the Panthers came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 pitching duel at home Saturday against Monarch.

First baseman Mikka Jones led off the top of the fifth with a double. Melanie Pinto singled and Shanda Thompson stepped in as pinch runner and stole second. Third baseman Alicia Ray smacked one to left field to drive both runners home.

"It was really good," Ray said of the hit. "Especially since I've been in a slump hitting."

Ray's hit ended her slump and the win stopped Monarch's seven-game slide.

Monarch pitcher Chrissy Lowe limited Boulder (9-8, 5-5 Front Range League) to five hits and recorded five strikeouts. Monarch improved to 6-12 overall and 2-8 in the Front Range League.

"It gives us confidence when we come in here beating one of the league's top teams," Coyotes coach Rich Mott said. "We got hits when we needed to produce. It was a team victory."

The three-hit inning was the only black mark on a solid performance by Lejune-Stodieck. The freshman notched eight strikeouts and gave up only four other hits. Still, it wasn't her pitching she was thinking about after the game.

"It was great for me, but we didn't have any bats today," Lejune-Stodieck said.

She said she expected the team to bounce back against Fort Collins next week.

"I believe we can do better and I believe we can win," she said. "And we're going to hit next week."

Boulder coach Jack Taylor is looking beyond the next game to a brighter future.

"I have one senior. I played a freshman pitcher and she got, what, eight strikeouts?" he said, smiling. "This is a team of underclassmen. We can build upon it."

Saturday's game was the first meeting between the two schools. They weren't in the same league until Boulder moved into the Front Range League this season.

Louisville Times Article - Coach Mott

New coach, new hope
Rich Mott wants to breathe life into Coyote softball

The Coyote girls softball team won’t have anything to worry about — they’re in good hands.  Stepping in to coach Monarch for the 2008 season is Rich Mott, a veteran of many different softball programs from all around Colorado.

“I’ve been coaching for many years,” he said. “I’ve coached softball since my daughter was 7 or 8 — and she’s 20 now.”  Mott was the president of the West Jeff girl’s softball association for five years and coached many competitive league teams, including the Colorado Trouble. He also started the Colorado Lightning in 2000. “We won a national championship at 16A (with the Lightning),” Mott said. “And we placed third in the state (in 2000).”

His daughter, Jennifer, is now a senior-to-be at CU; though, she doesn’t play anymore. “We still go out and knock the ball around,” Mott said.

He has one very simple reason for wanting to take the reins at MHS — Mott’s stagnant state was getting to him. “I missed being active (in coaching) and saw that there was an opportunity to do it,” he said. So, he checked the CHSAA Web site and found the announcement for an opening in Coyote Country.  “I looked at how they did last year — they had 9 wins, so they were below .500,” Mott said. “And I talked to the girls on the team at a parent association meeting a couple weeks back.”

Now that he has an idea of what his new team is capable of, Mott said he believes he can help Monarch re-establish itself as a softball powerhouse. “I know that they have an opportunity to have a really great ball club,” Mott said.

What is the biggest plus that Mott will bring to the program? “Fire in the belly,” he said. “I hate to lose, and hopefully I can instill that in the girls and help them get competitive.”

He said he hopes for this to be a long-term stay at Monarch. “I would hate to think this wouldn’t last at least five to seven years,” Mott said. During those years, Mott said he hopes to bring the Coyotes to that pinnacle of all high school sports, the state playoffs. “I would love to have as many (state championships) as we can get before the end,” he said. “And it relies mostly on the arms.”

Mott said he is still searching for a junior varsity, C-team and assistant varsity coach for the 2008 fall season. Interested individuals can contact Monarch athletic director Mark Sibley at mark.sibley@bvsd.org.

Trio Aims to Revive Softball

by Joshua Lindenstein

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Rich Mott, Mike Lujan and Rod Beauchamp make up a trio of coaches hired this summer to try to revive once-proud area softball programs in the fall.

Mott takes over as the third new coach in four seasons at Monarch, and Lujan does the same at Centaurus. Beauchamp, meanwhile, adds softball to his current duties as head girls basketball coach at Fairview.

All three programs have histories of success. But all three have fallen on tough times over the last three seasons.

Mott, 56, takes over for Rick Parks, who guided Monarch to a 9-11 mark last fall. The Coyote job is the first high school gig for Mott, who coached club ball in the summer for a dozen years.

But after sitting out the past couple of years after his daughter graduated from high school, Mott was ready to get back in the dugout.

"I missed doing it every day," the Evergreen real estate developer said. "I missed coaching the girls. I loved the game. I had a chance, I interviewed for it, and I guess they liked me."

Lujan, 35, takes over at Centaurus after serving the past three years as an assistant for Troy Schmid and Julie Bulfer.

He said he applied for the job when both Schmid and Bulfer were hired and was happy to get the nod this time around.

Lujan, a 1992 Centaurus grad, has coached in the Lady Warriors summer feeder program for several years now and said he's wanted the Centaurus job for a while.

"I guess you could say I had a lot of interest in coming back to coach," Lujan said.

Beauchamp, meanwhile, takes over for Dave Kreutzman at Fairview.

Beauchamp was an assistant baseball coach at Arvada for two years in the 1990s, but this marks his first experience of any kind as a softball coach.

Still, Beauchamp's basketball teams have proven he knows how to produce winners, and his winning ways should be a good shot in the arm for a Knights program that won just 11 games the last three years.

"I always thought if I would coach another sport that this is the one I'd like to do," Beauchamp said. "There was a need. I think there's a lot of excitement. I think there's a good core group coming back and I think they're excited to get to the next level and improve."
