2008 ASA Nationals Update in Midland

Day 1 - Monday 7/28

It's our first game of the tournament against the Oregon Panthers. SI scores in the first inning with a double by Tash and a single by Mariah. SI tacks on another 2 runs for a 3-0 lead after Tash singles and Mariah bombs a 2-run HR over the center field fence. SI scores another run in the 5th on a single by Nellie. With a 4-1 lead after 5 innings SI scores 5 runs on hits by Danielle, Nicky, Tash, Mariah and Heather. 14 hits in all including 3-3 for Tash, 4-4 for Mariah,  3-4 for Nellie, 2-3 for Heather and 1-3 for Bee. Great catching behind the dish for Paige and nice defense by Rudi, Marina and Chandler. Pitching was solid with Heather and Danielle combining for 1 run for a 9-1 victory.

Day 2 - Tuesday 7/29

We had our second game today vs. Hatters Gold from Florida (FL State Champions). SI was down 1-0 heading into the fifth when the Hatters rallied with 2 outs and scored 6 runs. SI scores 2 runs in the top of the 6th to make it 7-2 on hits by Mariah, Heather and Nicky. One bad inning did us in and the final score was 7-2. Nobody got hurt so we'll head into the bracket games Wednesday with a fresh staff. Nice pitching by Danielle and Heather and other hits by Tash and Paige.

Day 3 - Wednesday 7/30

Bracket play begins with a very good AZ Heatwave team that finished 2nd at the Hall of Fame tournament in OK. SI starts with 4

straight to reach base but only scores 1 and leaves the bases loaded. In the 2nd inning 2 runs score on a HR by Danielle, a walk by Rudi and singles by Mariah and Heather but leaves the bases loaded again. The score goes to 5-0 SI after Rudi hits a bases loaded double to score 2 more runs. AZ Heatwave puts a rally together in the bottom of the 3rd to score 2 and it's a 5-2 game through 3. Nobody scores in the 4th but the SI girls put on a hitting display in the 5th. Danielle starts with a single, then Brianne gets a double. With 1 out Tash singles, Mariah triples, Nellie, Marina, Heather, and Nicky hit 4 straight singles and Paige hits a double. SI sends 11 batters to the plate with 8 hits and takes an 11-2 lead. AZ scores 1 in the bottom of the 5th and the final score is SI 11-3. Heather and Danielle pitched a great game and the defense had no errors. All 10 batters had at least 1 hit in the game for a total of 14 base hits. The win keeps us in the winners bracket and a day off on Thursday. Next game is Friday vs. Lakewood Ladies-Black.

Day 5 - Friday 8/1

Impact starts the day against the very tough Lakewood Ladies - Black team (the eventual Champions). After a scoreless first inning LL scores 1 in the 2n d and 2 in the 3rd innning. Heather and Danielle did a great job of holding them to only 3 runs in 7 innings and Paige catches all 7. Our bats started to deliver but a great catch with the bases loaded on a deep fly ball by Rudi prevented us from tying the score at 3. Final score is LL 3-0.

Our first game in the elimination bracket is against a IL team called the Sparks. After 2 scoreless innings Mariah reaches on an error, Nellie walks and Nicky drives them in with a single. In the 3rd Danielle leads off with a ground rule double over the fence, Brianne sacrifice bunts her to 3rd and Rudi sacrifices her home. Nice hits from Tash, Paige and Heather. The combination of Heather and Danielle works again and Paige goes another 7 innings at catcher. Final score is 3-0 Sudden Impact. The rain and lightning push back the next game to Saturday 10am. 51 teams have been eliminated out of 83 teams so keep up the great effort ladies!

Day 6 - Saturday 8/2

Saturday begins with a game against the Diamond Dusters '93 from Houston. Their pitcher was extremely tough and had a no-hitter going until Brianne hit a single in the 7th. Our pitchers kept us in the game but we couldn't break through their pitcher. We would lose the game 3-0 and end our run at ASA Nationals for 2008.
