This past weekend the Chief’s travelled to the Tilton School in Tilton New Hampshire for two games.
Saturday’s game was a back and forth affair featuring tight checking and fantastic goaltending. The Chiefs Tanner Zacharewicz opened the scoring in the first period on a great feed from James Smith and Sal Novella. The Chiefs promptly took their foot off the gas and let a surging Tilton squad back in the game .The Ram’s scored two quick goals in 90seconds and carried a one goal lead to the locker room.
The Chiefs took to the ice for the second period with a determined look in their eye. They dominated the play but could only secure one goal past a stellar Tilton goalkeeper. Donny Thompson scored the tying goal on an assist from playmaker Mike Kantorski.
The Chiefs roared out of the locker room for the third and wasted no time in setting the pace. Sal Novella scored on a hard point shot to put the Chiefs up by one. Tanner Zacharewicz scored his second of the game, assisted by Conner Loree. Lee Edelman put the game away of a nifty play from Donny Thompson.
Final score Chiefs 5 Tilton Rams 3
Sunday afternoon the Chiefs got off the mark quickly and built up a 3 goal lead. Team captain Drew Mulligan started things off with a blistering point drive fed off a low cycle from Ben Roy and Donny Thompson. Lee Edelman continued his scoring streak off a great play set up by Thompson and Mulligan. Conner Loree got back on the board on a great feed by James Smith. The Rams managed to narrow the margin with a late effort but the Chiefs took a 3-1 lead to the locker room.
The Rams decide to make a game of it for the second period as they traded one goal each. The Chiefs Edelman score his second of the game unassisted.Cam Pinkham returning from the injured list played outstanding in his first game back between the pipes.
Penalties rose to the surface for the third period. Both teams could get no traction as the Refs decided to get involved and started the parade to the Sin Bin. Both teams pulled out the special teams as they traded power play for penalty kills. Both teams managed one power play goal apiece as Tanner Zacharewicz put the game on ice for the Chiefs on a great pass from an ailing Ben Roy.

Kenny Cairns was sharp in net Wednesday night, earning “Player of the Game” honors against a formidable Kent School squad. The game featured a goal tending duel as Kent’s net minder stonewalled a relentless Chief’s attack. It was by far the strongest effort of the season by the battle hardened Chiefs.
The Chiefs came out determined to impress Kent Varsity Coach Matt Herr who was in attendance for the game. From the drop of the puck, the Chiefs came right at Kent with constant puck pressure. Early in the first, a hurried Kent defensemen turned the puck over and a relentless Lee Edelman pounced on it, and went top shelf, giving the Chief’s a 1 goal lead.
A dogged Kent team regrouped and pressed the attack hard. The game turned into an offensive performance, as both teams opened up in a determined effort to score while both goaltenders made one impossible save after the other. The Kent team was able to get one past Chiefs goalie Kenny Cairns on a power play goal, evening the score at one apiece after two stanzas.
During intermission, a short handed Chiefs team rested and revised their attack plan but it would be Kent to draw first blood. At the 4 minute mark of the third, with the Chiefs in the box, Kent scored their second power play goal off of a miscue by a Chiefs defenseman in front of the net giving Kent their first lead of the game.
The Chief’s were not to be counted out. Defenseman Ben Roy stripped a Kent forward of the puck and with a little backhand sauce fed a surging Mike Kantorski who dented the twine, for the tieing marker. Both teams continued to press, but the balance of the game was a battle of special teams as the Refs decided to join in with a constant parade to the penalty box. Chief’s goalie Kenny Cairns was up to the task, keeping Kent at bay to secure a tie.
Final Score Chief’s 2 Kent 2

Chiefs traveled down the road to West Hartford, CT and easily defeated KO by a significant margin of over 10 goals. Kingswood Oxford has upgraded their hockey schedule and now plays in the Founders League. The Founders league is considered the toughest most competitive prep league. Three of the Chiefs players were very interested in KO for its challenging academics and tough hockey schedule. The game gave Coach Steve Gorman an opportunity to evaluate those players. Coach Gorman addressed the Chiefs at the end of the game and spoke about the upward path the KO program was taking forward and how he was looking for good hockey players who fit the KO mold of being quality students and above all quality citizens.
The Chiefs travel to Kent School this Wednesday at 6:00 PM for a tilt against Kent Varsity B.

The Chiefs start out their Prep schedule with a convincing win over Lawrence Academy 5-3.
The Chiefs came out firing, catching the Spartans off-guard in their first game of the season, and because of a stellar goaltending performance by Mike Titcomb, the Spartans trailed just 1-0 going into the second period. In the second period, freshman Adam Carafotes ignited the Spartans offense by scoring a quick goal off of a face-off. Senior quad-captain TJ Hartner also netted a goal, and freshman quad-captain Alexander Alexandrov contributed another. Hartner, Sophomore AJ Twogood, feshman Ben Potter, and junior Jake Waldie, were all credited with assists. The Spartans opened the third frame in a 3-3 tie with the Chiefs, a very polished team and much improved from last season. After a turnover in the defensive zone, the Chiefs capalitized and regained the lead 4-3. In the closing minutes of the third period, the Spartans had a 5 vs. 3 advantage trailing by a goal, but were unable to capatilize, as the Cheifs' penalty kill prevailed. The Chiefs added another goal in the closing seconds of the game, handing the Spartans a 5-3 loss. Varsity Head Coach Kevin Potter took the Chiefs on a guided tour of Lawrence Academy before the game. It was a great Q & A for the players and families.

The Chiefs pummelled Hall/Southington Knights 15 to 1. The game was uneventful as the High School players from Hall/Southington Knights couldn't mount any sort of offense and very little defense. The Chiefs trounced over the 2008 CIAC State Quarterfinalist Hall/Southington Knights.

After easily defeating U18 Avon on Saturday, the Chiefs faced their instate rivals the CT Wolves Sunday morning at Northford Arena. The Chiefs came out firing on all cylinders, taking the play to the Wolves with aggressive physical play and relentless fore checking. The Chiefs offense pounded shot after shot at the Wolves net but either hit the post or was robbed by the Wolves goaltender.
Donny Thompson finally cracked the game open for the Chiefs. Mike Kantorski fed him a beauty pass sending him all alone from the top of circles to put it past the Wolves’ sprawling goalie for a Chief’s 1-0 lead. The Wolves wouldn’t die and evened the score 1-1, late in the first period. The second period saw a gritty two way game with end to end play and great chances by both teams. A determined Chief’s squad struck first when Chief’s workhorse Nick Ryan fed defenseman Matt St. Martin, who jumped up in the rush, splitting the defensemen and deked the Wolves goaltender out of his skates. Two minutes later, Mike Kantorski with his second helper of the game, set up a surging Lee Edelman who capped off a strong performance by putting the Chief’s up by 2 with a power play goal. Two minutes later the Wolves replied with a power play goal of their own, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
The Chief’s started the 3rd period strong but ran into penalty trouble, as the refs gave the Wolves’ four power play opportunities in a row. The penalty kill units put up a valiant effort, but ran out of gas as the Wolves evened the score 3-3 with a double deflection off a Chiefs' defenseman's shoulder. The final two minutes saw the Chief’s continue to swarm the Wolves net, ringing the post three times. The Chiefs were relentless in their attack and with 20 seconds left on the clock, the Wolves goaltender stoned a stunned Tanner Zacharewicz on what would have been the winner.
Final Score. Chiefs 3 Wolves 3.

The Chiefs drove up to Tewksbury, Ma this past Sunday to battle the New England Moose. The Chiefs came out hard firing on all cylinders. The Moose' goaltender was a stone wall, thwarting all Chief shots. Nick Ryan was able to crack his armour and put the Chiefs up 1-0. A few minutes later, Nick Ryan was able to find the back of the net again when he recieved a great drop back pass from Sal Novella. The Chiefs were in the drivers seat for the rest of the second period. At the start of the third period, Jared Blake took the puck off the wall and fed Connor Loree, Loree chipped the puck to James Smith, who was lightning quick through the neutral zone. Smitty drew the defender towards him and hit a streaking Tanner Zacharewicz to put the Chiefs up 3-0. The Moose continued to work hard and were able to score one goal. The final score was Chiefs 3 - Moose 1.

Prep power house Academie St-Louis edged the Connecticut Chiefs U16 squad 5-4 in a nail biter, to open the Harrow Sports Jamboree this past weekend at Millbrook Academy. The game was a fast paced affair with both teams showing the many prep scouts in attendance what they were made of.
Academie St-Louis stuck first but a relentless fore checking Chief squad took a 3-2 lead to the locker room after the first half. The second stanza saw the Chiefs get into penalty trouble early and the St-Louis jumped ahead 4-3 on an extended 2 man advantage. As the period continued, the pace and the gritty determination of both squads ramped up. The period ended with the Chiefs goaltender on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, but the day belonged to St-Louis as they held on to edge the Chiefs 5-4.
Coaches Johnson and Barbour agreed that their team played well enough to win but the bounces went in favour of the team from Quebec. Coach Barbour said “Success at these showcases is measured in many ways. The discussions that we had here tonight with the many Prep coaches in attendance, bodes well for our team. Many of our players turned some heads here tonight. The feed back we have received has been very positive.”

Sunday morning, under a dark sky and a relentless rain, the Chief's awoke early to prepare for a unpardonable game start time of 8 AM. None of these things dampened the mood in an uplifted Chief's locker room. The team was well rested and looked forward to the challenge ahead. They were determined to advance past the Buffalo Saints and onto the next round.
At the opening faceoff, both teams exploded to engage in a game that saw end to end play, tight checking and brilliant goaltending. The Chiefs had chance after chance to score but couldn’t solve the Saints goaltender. Chief’s goalie Kenny Cairns was brilliant as he tuned back the Saints attack. The Chiefs kept up their trademark physicality but with more discipline as they received only one penalty for the entire matchup.
With 6 minutes remaining, an errant pass by a Chief’s winger resulting in a rare turnover in their own zone, produced a quick shot on the Chief’s net. A sprawling Saints player going hard to the net kicked the rebound in. With the net off the moorings, a Saints attacker and the Chief's goalie tangled in the net, the Chiefs were shocked to see the official single a goal.
After much discussion between the officials the disputed goal was allowed to stand.
An irate Chiefs bench quickly regrouped and was relentless in their attack upon the Saints net. With the Saints in a defensive shell and Chiefs goalie on the bench the Chiefs pressed home the attack. Time expired as the Saints held on to a one goal lead, winning 1-0.
Chiefs’ coaches Johnson and Barbour had nothing but praise for their squad.
“To go 3-0-0 and get to the playoffs at the Junior Bruins Tournament is a feat in itself.” said Coach Johnson. ”The Saints have been around for a long time and to hold them to a one goal game only speaks to how far our boys have come. My hat is off to them.”
The Saints went on to meet the U16 Philadelphia Flyers in the finals, losing 5-2
Saturday, September 26
A determined Chiefs squad took to the ice needing a win to go 3-0-0 in the round robin and assure a place at the play-off table. The Chiefs dominated play from the drop of the puck but the bigger more physical Chiefs found themselves in the penalty box for most of the first half. Undaunted by the officials the Chiefs ran up a three goal lead in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Chiefs first goal came off a faceoff win by Nick Ryan who got the puck to Tanner Zacharewicz who batted it over the sprawling Boston goalie. The line of Lee Eldelman, Ryan, and Zacherewicz took the ice for a rare Chiefs powerplay and scored a highlight reel tic tac toe play to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Mike Kantorski, just back from a nagging shoulder injury, rediscovered his scoring touch when he combined with playmaker Arron Mandell to put the Chiefs up by three. A dogged one man effort by the Boston Advantage narrowed the Chief's lead by one late in the stanza.
Boston Advantage ,facing a 0-3-0 weekend came out strong to start the second half and drew first blood, narrowing the Chiefs lead to one goal.Play settled to a see saw battle with both teams playing a more reserved style with few penalties. A tenacious James Smith broke free to score an unassisted goal midway through the half to put the Chiefs back up by 2 .
The Chiefs continued to shut the Boston team down with more disiplined play and skated to victory 4-2 posting a perfect 3-0-0 record.

With scant rest the Chiefs took control of their destiny with a convincing victory over the Westchester Express 6-2. After a penalty filled first half the Chiefs persevered through three 5 on 3 man down situations and finished with a gritty 1-1 tie. Chief's goaltender Kenny Cairns was outstanding in keeping the Westchester attack at bay.
The Chiefs retired to their locker room between halfs and faced an irate coaching staff due to their undisciplined play. At the start of the second half things looked bad as the Chiefs took yet another penalty and saw the Westchester Express take their only lead of the game 2-1. It was gut check time for the Chiefs. With dogged determination and sheer force of will the Chiefs exploded for five unanswered goals taking the Westchester Express by storm.
The Chiefs attack was lead by James Smith with two goals and an assist followed by Tanner Zacherwicz with a pair. Singles were added by Aaron Mandell and Sal Novella. Ben Roy lead the defense with two helpers.
The Chiefs face the Boston Advantage 12:40 PM at NESC. Good Seats still available.
Friday, September 25
The Chiefs came out flying against the South Shore Kings. Mike Kantorski forechecked hard and found Connor Loree on the half wall. Loree fed Donny Thompson who deked the goalie five hole to put the Chiefs up 1-0. The Kings were reselient and battled back to get the score evened up at 1.
The Chiefs were focused though and continued to battle. Gene Zalozhin worked hard to feed James Smith for a one timer to get the score to 2-1. Tanner Z worked hard on his zone entry and fed Lee Edelman who buried it top cheese to put the Chiefs up 3-1. The Chiefs were relentless and Mike Kantorski finshed on a nice pass from Loree and Blake.
The refs though kept South Shore in the game sending the Chiefs endlessly to the box. The Kings scored on a questionable high stick to get the score to 4-2. The Chiefs killed off the remaining penalties against a tenacious South Shore Kings team.
The Chiefs faceoff against Westchester Express 9:00 PM at NESC. Good seats are still available.

The Connecticut Chiefs are thrilled to be competing again in another highly scouted event, the Boston Junior Bruins Shoot-Out starting September 25. "This is always an exciting weekend for the entire Junior Bruins organization. "It is the first big event of the fall for the entire New England hockey community. Hockey fans get their first look at the fall and winter teams and it is the first time the scouting community gets a chance to really see all the top teams on the east coast in one building over a three day period," said GM/Coach Peter Masters of the Boston Junior Bruins. The Shoot-Out takes place at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, MA. This will be the second major opportunity after the Mass Face-Off at the Midget Level for College & Pro Scouts to check out the talent in the Boston area that they want to follow during the 09/10 season. “The New England Sports Center is within a 2-hour drive from approximately 21 D-I and 33 D-II & III programs. We expect most will be represented, in addition to scouts from NHL organizations and Central Scouting. Since the Shoot-Out takes place before college programs take the ice, we also expect scouts from programs outside New England to catch the action,” said Peter Masters. Junior teams and Midget teams from all over the US and Canada have been invited to this “don’t miss” event! Last year the Shoot-Out had over 70 division 1 and 3 scouts in attendance.

The Chiefs traveled to Rhode Island early Sunday morning for a game against the Rhode Island Saints. The Saints had their full complement of players for the battle on their home ice. The game was fast from the first drop of the puck. Both teams were focused on picking up their checks and limiting scoring opportunities. The Chiefs were relentless in the offensive zone but couldn't solve the Saints goalie. On the powerplay Connor Loree on a feed from Kantorski and Thompson walked from below the goal line to jam it home for a 1-0 Chief lead. The Saints were persistent and ended up scoring to tie the game at 1 -1. At the end of the second period Aaron Mandell went hard to the net to follow a Nick Ryan shot and finished to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. The game looked like it was going to open up offensively but both teams played good defensive hockey. The Chiefs worked hard for a 2-1 victory.
Saturday, September 19
The Chiefs played against a pesky determined Rhode Island Saints. The Saints were on a great run as of late reaching the finals of the Mass Tier I Labor Day Faceoff. The Saints came to the rink ready to play with a short determined bench. The Chiefs came out hard but faced a stiff neutral zone trap from the Saints. The Chiefs were stifled at first by the trap but were able to start making plays to beat it. Connor Loree beat the Saints goaltender on a nice feed from Ben Roy to give the CHiefs a 1 goal lead. The Saints were able to get a forward past the Chiefs defensemen to even up the score. The Chiefs responded when Donny Thompson battled for a loose puck and sent a lazer thru the goalie's five hole. Ben Roy scored on an nifty feed from Drew Mulligan. The Saints were able to score another goal top shelf on a defensive turnover on the Chiefs blue line to put get the score to 3-2. Lee Edelman made a play in the corner to get the puck to Donny Thompson to feed the puck to Georgy T who then snuck the puck past the Saints goalie for a 4 to 2 lead. The Saints were able to get a late goal but the Chiefs proved too much for them to handle.
Monday, September 14
The Chiefs blew a 3-0 lead against the Westchester Express this past Sunday. Westchester scored 5 unanswered goals to win 5-3. The Chiefs came out of the gate flying. Hard hitting and good passing work had Westchester pinned in there zone for the first period.. Lee Edelman got a great feed from Nick Ryan and let a lazer go on net. The Westchester goalie stoned him but let a generous rebound out. Tanner Zacharewicz was crashing the net and buried the rebound to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Connor Loree and Donny Thompson connected with Thompson putting the puck past the Westchester Goalie to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Austin Bronson laid three big hits which allowed him to take the puck off the half boards and roof it top shelf to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. The Chiefs were dominating in all facets of the game until a Chiefs' player took an extremely selfish penalty. This penalty resulted in a 5 minute major plus and additional minor. Westchester was too much on the long powerplay and quickly netted two goals. With the Chiefs defense tired from being on the PK Westchester's speedy forwards were able to split the defense. In the end selfish play stole the victory from the Chiefs.
Next Weekend: Rhode Island Saints Home and Home Series

"Drew was not given a leadership position this season. he earned it this off season and training camp." exclaimed Coach Barbour. The Chiefs traveled to Burrillville, RI for their last exhibition game before the regular season starts. The Chiefs tied 3 to 3 against the Rhode Island Saints, members of the Mass Tier I league. The game started with some hard hits immediately from the drop of the puck. The Chiefs have one of the bigger blue lines in the U16 AAA ranks. The defense made the Saints feel their wrath with some crushing hits in the first period. Aaron Mandell evened up the score by roofing the puck top shelf on a pass from Austin Bronson and Donny Thompson on the powerplay. The Chiefs kept the Saints at bay with some great penalty killing in the second. The Saints though were relentless and were able to drive one past Goalie Cam Pinkham to put them up 2 to 1. The Chiefs started to settle the puck down and make better decisions in the third. Jared Blake was able to bury a slapper from the blue line on a miscue from the Saints goaltender. The intense play went back and forth with the Saints requiring Pinkham to make some great saves. On the Powerplay, the Saints scored a highlight reel backdoor one timer to give them the lead of 3 to 2. A few shifts later Tanner Zacharewiez made a nifty play on his offensive blue line to get the puck deep where he followed up with a thundering body check forcing the Saints defender to rush his pass. Connor Loree was there to hit the other Saints defender who was going for the loose puck. Loree then slid the puck to Lee Edelman who finsh a back hand shot to even up the game at 3. Day 2
The Chiefs took the ice for the 2nd grueling day of training camp a little worse for wear after the tough workout. Neverless though the team responded well to the coaching staff by putting a great effort forward on the ice. Off-Ice training was ramped up from the first day. After a dynamic warm-up The Chiefs had to grind it out doing planks, pushups, and 50 yard dashes.
Day 3
More pucks were on the ice for the third day. The Chiefs were working on quick puck movement and transition. Then a rigourous off ice session was held to further strengthen the resolve of the team. The Chiefs are looking forward to the exhibition weekend.
Monday, August 24
The U16 Midget Minor AAA team came together for the first time yesterday at South Windsor Arena. All players and parents participated in a team meeting where Coach Johnson and Barbour set the expectation level for the team. The first off-ice session was focusing on learning how to prepare for on-ice practice. The Chiefs went through some light running, dynamic warm-up, and static stretching to prepare for the on-ice practice. Before the ice was ready to go the Chiefs had a chalk talk focusing on defensive coverage and reads. Coach Barbour remarked to one of the parents" When we first started talking about d-zone coverage there were a lot of blank looks out there, but its not their fault they just have never been taught properly yet." The ice session was a brutally intense session of drills and sprints to get each player acclimated to the intensity level that the Coaching Staff desires for the season. The dedicated Chiefs went outside again after practice for a cool down session to properly stretch and a team building excercise which provided some good comic relief. The Chiefs are looking forward to another instense day of training on Monday....................

The Connecticut Chiefs are pleased to announce they shall be participating again in both the Massachusetts Tier I Labor Day Face-Off and Boston Junior Bruins Shoot-Out. The Chiefs are also participationg in The Midget Fall Classic which is a new event being hosted by good friend Mike O'Connell of Pro Am Hockey thatshall have a very competitive field.
The Massachusetts Tier I Labor Day Face-Off will have 48 Midget Minor teams and 36 Midget Major Teams in the most highly scouted event to start the season in the US. The tournament is scouted by USHL Central Scouting, Prep Schools, Colleges, and the NHL. The tournament starts August 29 with each team playing 5 games and playoffs on Labor Day. The Connecticut Chiefs are excited to be competing again at this prestigious tournament. Last year the Chiefs narrowly lost in the Semi-Finals to the 6 to 4 to the eventual Champions Valley Jr. Warriors. www.tier1faceoff.com
Last year the Shoot-Out had over 70 division 1 and 3 scouts in attendance. www.bostonjuniorbruins.com
