Cannons drop sixth straight as Reds prevail 11-2
CONIFER, Colo. (August 2, 2009) – The Colorado Reds defeated the Colorado Cannons by the score of 11-2 in NABA 18AAA action on Sunday evening, August 2nd, at Conifer High School.The Reds got two-run singles from Israel Victor and Matt Barker during a five-run first inning and cruised to the victory. Barker added a two-run HR in the eighth inning and finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Mike Onisko (2-for-3) and Nick Gray also homered as the Reds improved to 11-2-0 and increased their lead to 3.0 games atop the 18AAA standings. Anthony Cortez (9.0 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) went the distance to pick up the victory for the Reds, who stranded just five runners and did not commit an error.
Dan Gutierrez went 3-for-4 with an RBI, one run scored and a stolen base as the Cannons fell to 2-11-1 and slipped to the bottom of the 18AAA standings. With four games remaining on the regular-season schedule, the Cannons are now 1.5 games behind the Twins for the eighth (final) spot in the 2009 playoffs. Derek Herbig went 2-for-4, Matt Harris (1-for-3, double) scored a run and Josh Zavislan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Zavislan (8.0 IP, 15 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; now 0-3) went the distance in a game that lasted exactly two hours.
The Cannons are scheduled to play the Denver Rox (8-5-1) on Sunday afternoon, August 9th, at 12:30 p.m. at Colorado Academy High School in Denver.
