Red Sox win first game with 10-2 victory over Cannons
DENVER, Colo. (July 26, 2009) – The Denver Red Sox defeated the Colorado Cannons by the score of 10-2 in NABA 18AAA action on Sunday morning, July 26th, at East High School in Denver.

The Red Sox plated five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back en route to their first victory of the 2009 season. Marcus Wood (triple) and Shane Haas (4-for-4, two doubles) each drove in three runs for the Red Sox (1-9-1) while Oberto (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) picked up the victory.

Jeff Duggan hit a two-run HR (1) in the bottom of the first inning to account for the Cannons’ only runs on Sunday. Jacob Maupin and Dan Gutierrez (SB, run scored) each went 2-for-4 while reliever John Steinhoff (7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) fanned seven in relief of starter Danny Hodges (2.0 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K), who fell to 1-3.

Eight walks, three errors, four unearned runs and 14 strikeouts at the plate all plagued the Cannons, who lost their fifth straight game. Thirty-two of the 115 runs allowed by the Cannons’ pitching staff this season are unearned. Both teams stranded 10 runners on base in a game that lasted just over two-and-a-half hours.

The Cannons (2-10-1) are scheduled to play the Colorado Reds (9-2-0) on Sunday afternoon, August 2nd, at 4:00 p.m. at Conifer High School.
