Orioles get past Cannons, 12-5
DENVER, Colo. (July 19, 2009) – The Denver Orioles defeated the Colorado Cannons by the score of 12-5 in NABA 18AAA action on Sunday morning, July 19th, at East High School in Denver.

The Cannons held a 2-1 advantage after the first inning of play, but the Orioles plated three runs in the top of the third to take a two-run lead. The Cannons answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at four apiece heading into the fourth inning. However, the first batter in the top of the fourth reached on an error, leading to three unearned runs and providing the Orioles with a lead they would not relinquish.

Orioles’ leadoff hitter Bryan Slekes (1-for-3, three walks) scored five runs while Yousof Bahrini (2-for-5, double, two runs scored) homered and drove in four. B. Kietel collected three hits, drove in one and scored a pair of runs as the Orioles improved to 7-3-0 on the season. Starting pitcher Tyler Burbank (4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 6 K; no decision) and reliever Cory Kropp (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K; win) combined to record 15 strikeouts. As a team, the Orioles committed just one error and did not allow any unearned runs.

Josh Zavislan went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Cannons (2-9-1), who stranded 15 runners on base en route to their fourth straight setback. Justin Ray (triple, run scored) had two hits, Dan Gutierrez (1-for-4, RBI) scored two runs and Jacob Maupin (1-for-4, SB) finished with two RBI. Ryan Hubbard (4.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), who went 1-for-2 with an RBI double at the plate, fell to 0-1 in his first start on the mound this season. As a team, the Cannons out-hit the Orioles 11 to 9. The Cannons made eight total errors in the field and surrendered six unearned runs on Sunday. Cannons’ pitchers also issued nine walks, five of which came around to score.

The Cannons have now committed 51 errors on the season, a figure which translates into 4.3 defensive blunders per contest. Twenty-eight of the 105 runs allowed by the Cannons’ pitching staff this season are unearned. Through 12 games in 2009, the Cannons have registered an .891 team fielding percentage. Cannons’ opponents have committed just 25 errors while recording a .944 fielding percentage.

The Cannons are scheduled to play the Denver Red Sox on Sunday morning, July 26th, at 9:00 a.m. at East High School in Denver. Earlier this season (May 10th), the Cannons and the Red Sox played to a 4-4 tie in 11 innings at the Machebeuf High School varsity baseball field in Denver. Zavislan (11.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 12 K) tossed all 11 innings in what marked the Cannons’ second game of the 2009 season.
