Cannons stun Grizzlies, 8-1, for first win of 2009
DENVER, Colo. (June 7, 2009) – The Colorado Cannons defeated the Denver Grizzlies by the score of 8-1 in NABA 18AAA action on Sunday afternoon, June 7th, at Colorado Academy High School in Denver.Chris Garcia went 3-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and two RBI for the Cannons while Danny Hodges (2-for-3, double) drove in three. Starter Justin Ray (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 7 BB, 6 K; now 1-0) went the distance for the Cannons, allowing just one earned run while fanning six. Ryan Hubbard (SF) and Ted Jimenez each went 1-for-3 with a double for the Cannons, who pounded 10 hits and committed just one error. Jeff Duggan (three walks) and Derek Herbig (1-for-2) each scored two runs as the Cannons (1-5-1) picked up their first win of the 2009 season.
Steve M. (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) suffered the loss for the previously undefeated Grizzlies (4-1-0). As a team, the Grizzlies managed just three hits in a game that lasted just two hours and 15 minutes.
Several of the Grizzlies’ players departed the game midway through the contest due to prior commitments (no injuries or ejections). With no outs in the top half of the seventh, the Grizzlies, who had only eight players remaining, surrendered the remainder of the contest.
The Cannons are scheduled to play the Colorado Twins on Sunday morning, June 14th, at 9:00 a.m. at East High School in Denver.
