Valiant comeback falls short in 12-11 loss to Rox
DENVER, Colo. (May 31, 2009) – The Denver Rox defeated the Colorado Cannons by the score of 12-11 in eight innings (three-hour time limit) in NABA 18AAA action on Sunday morning, May 31st, at Colorado Academy High School in Denver.

Leading by the score of 10-3, the Rox got a two-run HR from Jesse Rooney in the top of the sixth inning to build a nine-run cushion. The Cannons got a bases-loaded RBI walk from pinch hitter Kyle Simpson in the bottom of the sixth before exploding for four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacob Maupin led off the Cannons’ half of the seventh with a double and went to third on John Steinhoff’s single. Ted Jimenez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and all three runners advanced on a wild pitch. After Skip Davis walked, Miguel Loera’s RBI ground ball to third was thrown away down the rightfield line, allowing both Steinhoff and Jimenez to score. Two batters later, Chris Garcia’s sacrifice fly plated Davis with the Cannons’ fourth run of the frame.

At the conclusion of the seventh inning, the umpires determined that the eighth inning would be the final inning of play due to the NABA’s three-hour time limit.

Newcomer Justin Ray, who made an all-out, over-the-shoulder diving catch in centerfield with the bases loaded to end the top of the fifth inning, took the mound in the top of the eighth and retired the Rox in order (two strikeouts). In the bottom of the eighth, Chris Rolofson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, Maupin’s RBI triple to leftfield brought the Cannons to within three runs. Steinhoff’s RBI single to leftfield – his third hit of the contest, scored Maupin and cut the Cannons’ deficit to just two runs at 12-10.

Derek Herbig, who pitched 5.2 innings in relief (nine strikeouts) and took over at first base in the top of the eighth, followed Steinhoff’s single with a base hit of his own to give the Cannons runners at first and second. Davis’ third walk of the day loaded the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout, Ray’s RBI groundout to third base allowed the Cannons to pull to within a run. Another strikeout – this time with runners at second and third – ended the game for the winless Cannons (0-5-1 overall in 2009).

Tyler (5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 8 K) picked up the win for the Rox while Chris got the save. Adam went 4-for-6 as Taylor, Jeremiah, Cory and Rooney each had two RBI. The Rox stranded 13 runners, but stole seven bases and pounded out 13 hits.

Rolofson (1-for-3, two walks) and Maupin (2-for-4) scored two runs apiece for the Cannons while Steinhoff finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Garcia, who started on the mound for the Cannons, struck out four while falling to 0-1 on the year. Davis reached base in four of his five plate appearances to raise his team-leading on-base % to .611. The Cannons, who are averaging 4.5 errors per game, committed five errors, allowed five unearned runs and yielded three bases-loaded walks on Sunday. The Cannons, who are hitting .203 as a team, have allowed 16 unearned runs in six games. The Cannons are also currently sporting a dreadful .883 team fielding percentage.

The Cannons are scheduled to play the Denver Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon, June 7th, at 12:30 p.m. at Colorado Academy High School in Denver (game was originally scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.).
