1993 WOODLAND HILLS RAIDERS - MIDGETS

The short History of the Woodland Hills Raiders Youth Football Midget team will be shared and remembered forever in Cyberspace. The Raiders belonged to the Valley Youth Football Conference located in the San Fernando Valley, a surburb of Los Angeles,Ca.
After the 1993 season the Woodland Hills Youth Football ceased to exist as they nerged with the West Valley Eagles Youth Football League. The Raiders brought four teams to join the Eagles four teams in an effort of making the west valley a competitive football force. After the 1994 season the Raiders name and colors were retired in favor of the red, white and blue of the Eagles. Yet another Raiders dynasty slowly fades into history.
The Midget Division team had a very poor record and reputation in prior years, including a winless '92 season. The upcoming season was put into jeopardy as a shortage of players hampered the campaign. After folding my Tiny Mite team, I was asked to lend my expertise and experience to the Midget team. Coming off a successful 10-1 season in 1992 I was in need of a new challenge as I was a new member of the community. Things were done a lottle different in the Valley as compared to the City.
As the new Defensive Coordinator I met with my new team and began installing a new defense, a new confidence and a new sense of pride. These players were ready to advance to the next level, however with a shortage of players and a lack of speed and talent, this was quite the challenge.
Here you will see the results of their hardwork and dedication this team raised their heads high and produced respect from their peers.

SEASON DIARY
Fate wasn't kind as the Opening Game pitted the Raiders against the Defending Super Bowl Champions East Valley Trojans. The revamped Defense took the field and played together as a unit holding the Trojans to only eight points in the first half, a morale builder. Unfortunatly our Offense leaves everything to be desired. We were unable to get a steay flow to our offense resulting in a 16-0 defeat.
The next opponent we faced was Coach Santos Juarez, the veteran coach of the Valley Falcons. His reputation as being crafty proved correct as he forged a 6-0 victory from a tie in the fourth quarter. The Defense came to play again as they constantly found a way to shut down a well coach veteran team. Again the offense failed to put any points on the board. A long season is on the horizon.

The Pasadena Ponies pranced into Taft High School as a former opponent awaited to release his high powered offense on the Raiders. The Badd Boys were ready and awaiting the challenge. Frustrating the Ponies all day as they were unable to sustain a drive. After a Raider turnover late in the third quarter to let Pasadena take a 6-0 lead, the Raiders Offense came alive as they drove the length of the field to tie the game at 6-6. The Ponies made one final effort to break the tie but the Badd Boys were ready and halted Pasadena inside the five yard line on downs.
What a great shot in the the arm for the Raiders morale as they tied the powerful, highly favorite Pasadena team.

As the season progressed slowly there was no break in the schedule as we traveled to Sylmar to face off with the North Valley Golden Bears. The Raiders were game and gave a great effort but they had no answers as the Bears physically dominated the game as they came away with a 17-0 victory.
At the half way mark of the season the Raiders record stood at a dismal 0-3-1, with no help in sight. Grumblings have begun from the disgruntled parents and unsatisfied staff members. Beware of things in the air as the Raiders will travel to Canoga Park High School next week to face the Eagles.

The Raiders faced off with Mike Russell and his high powered offense at Canoga Park High and kept the game close at 6-6 unto late in the fourth quarter. The defense gave up a breakaway touchdown and knowing that the offense that was still struggling to put points on the board finally gave up and let the final touchdown to be scored on the final play as Emilo Galvin broke free on a 62 yard jaunt to end the game at 20-6.
Frustration set in as our Head Coach Kyle Tyson lost his temper and started throw trash cans around after the game. The beginning of the end was at hand as I had feared. On Sunday I decided to call all the players and request that they show up for practice on Tuesday as many players were ready to quit the ream in the aftermath of madness displayed after the game. All the players agreed to arrive early for a Team Meeting. Then I notified the Head Coach of the situation and let him know that it was either done another way or everything would come crashing down around our heads. He agreed to let me speak to the team and I gave it the best speech that I was able to muster. Would things change or would they stay the same? Stay tuned.

Attention, Attention. Hard work pays off. The Raiders traveled to San Fernando to face the Braves and shook up the Valley. As the Badd Boys Defense rose to the occassion and stopped everything the Braves threw at them and came away with their first victory of the year.
As usual the offense couldn't break through the Braves' stiff defense and it was all on the Defense's shoulders once again. Late in the fourth quarter the defense rose up and shutdown the Braves as they caused a turnover that allowed linebacker Dylan Kennedy scored the only touchdown of the game as he scooped up the fumble and returned it to the House for a 6-0 victory.

With a win under their belt, practice went well that week as the confidence grew. Next on the schedule was the Chatsworth Chiefs. The game was reschedule to an afternoon kickoff, since it was Halloween. The Raiders took the field at Taft High with a spring in their step and a chip on their shoulder. The Defense came to play, as several bone jarring hits were delivered. Also heard, as the defender rose "Trick or Treat", in reference to the day and the Chiefs colors of orange and white.
The offense broke out of their rut and scored a 28-12 victory as the Raiders put together back to back victories. With the Playoffs out of reach, the Raiders will be playing for Pride and Coach T's 100th victory of his career, as they visit the Northride Knights next week at Granada Hill High School. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
