  Welcome

Welcome to the Clydesdale Colts.

The Colts were formed in 1985 by Lex Carson, Duncan Mcleod and Harvie Gordon. After a struggle to get funds together the team was ready to play in the 1986 BAFL Anglo Division 1 but with no kit they were unable to have a preseason game. So the teams first game was their first kited match too. Needless to say the Colts were thumped 70-0 by Musselburgh. The season finished with a 3-7 record not too bad, but room for improvement.

The 1987 season saw the Colts joining the Budweiser league. They had learned a great deal during the off season and finished the season with an unbeaten record, winning the Scottish Division One trophy. A great achievement considering they side had no Americans yet. The Colts went on to beat the Washington Presidents in the quarter finals but were beaten in the semi finals by the Ealing Eagles.

The 1988 season saw the Colts move up to the Premier Division of the Budweiser League. This year also had the Colts making their first foreign signing in the shape of Canadian Quarterback Scott Smith. It was hoped that Scott could take them one step further that the previous campaign and win a bowl game. However this was not to be and the Colts finished third in their division with a 5-5 record.

The 89 Season had that Colts playing in the Scottish section of the Combined Gridiron League's Crown National Division. A 7 - 1 regular season record where the team scored 153 points and conceded 71 saw them take on the Walsall Titans in the first round of the playoff. Unfortunately for the Colts the Titans eliminated them from the playoff race.

British National Gridiron League, National Division business in 1990 and a 9 - 1 record took the Scottish title. Into the Playoffs and victories of 40 - 8 v Redditch Arrows and 40 -0 over Harrogate Hawks saw the Colts into the the National Division Bowl game. Ipswich Cardinals proved a step too far for the team and the Colts went down 34 - 22.

Clydesdale bounced back from the Bowl game defeat in 1991 to sweep back into the playoffs with a 10 -0 record and the Scottish title. A 2 - 0 victory over Harrogate Hawks in the quarter finals and a semi final defeat of Wolverhampton Outlaws by 57 - 8 and the Colts were back in the BNGL National Division Bowl game and eager to avenge the previous seasons defeat. Unfortunately it was not to be as the London Cardinals triumphed 52 - 7 .

The next season saw the team acquire the services of American Al Penn White at Quarterback. With Penn White's accurate passing game proving the perfect foil for the teams powerful running game spearheaded by workhorse RB Davy Orr , who lead the Division's rushing stats, the Colts took their 3rd BNGL National Division Scottish title in three years. Once more into the playoffs they went. Defeats of North Yorkshire Hawks ( 40 - 28 ) and Dundee Whalers ( 34 - 20 ) had the team in their third successive final. It was to prove third time lucky for the Colts as with Penn White playing on an injured ankle they saw off the Farnham Knights 34 - 22 in a thrilling game.

A depleted Colts squad took to the field in 1993 but still managed a 6 - 4 record but no playoff spot.

After a healthy intake of new players include a crop of young rookies the team faired much better in the 1994 BAFA Division 2 Campaign. Their 8 - 2 record saw the team finish behind the 10 -0 Fife 49ers in Scotland and a return to the playoffs. During the season an away win in Aberdeen against the Granite City Oilers saw a British record established by RB David Orr. The Colts player broke through the 10,000 yard career rushing barrier becoming the first British player to do so. A first round playoff road trip saw the team crash out 61 - 6 to eventual bowl game finalists Bedford.

1995 had the team playing in the newly formed Scottish Gridiron Association's Division 1 where a 5 - 5 record was posted. The season stared with an appearance in the Capital Bowl competition held at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh. A 16 -6 win over Dundee Whalers saw the Colts into the final against the mighty Glasgow Lions. A cerditable performance actually had the Colts ahead 8 - 6 at one point before finally going down by 31 - 8.
