2016 Season closes with a Bang!!!!
The 2016 edition of the Chiefs wrapped up Saturday night in the NABF Regionals at Roselawn. What a seaseon it was this year. Without a doubt, the toughest season of finding teams to play, fields, umpires and for the first time in a while, players. Not often do we encounter having a problem finding players but it was different this summer. Kids just not wanting to play, colleges shutting kids down for no reason what so ever, selfish coaches saying they need 14 pitchers to play 27 game schedule. Craziness but alas your Chiefs carried on and marched to the beat of the drums off in the distance. They swept thru the CRC Wednesday night league again with the only hiccup being a tie with the upcoming Mudcats. Nice to see the league starting to grow again. On the non league side of it they managed a 1 game over 500 record finishing 9-8. Again just one of those odd summers. They would have pitching but no offense. They would hit but couldn't drive the runners in. Do both of the above and no pitching. Enough to make a coach go crazy and have a stroke. The team starting showing signs off life after the great Prasco Park affair. The bats were woken up with each game following that and the drive to win increased as the players starting coming together. The Chiefs won the City Tournament by beating the Mudcats in the Finals. Winning the League outright secured the Team's 17th straight NABF Regional appearance. Now the task facing the team was could they make a 3rd straight NABF World Series appearance. The 2016 NABF Cincinnati Regionals were set up as an 8 team tournament. Largest Regional in the country this year. 5 teams traveled to Cincinnati and 3 CRC teams filled out the Field. The Chiefs were awarded Host Team # 1 and assigned to Pool A while the Mudcats were awarded Host Team #2 and assigned to Pool B. Lake Erie from CLeveland, Buffalo Orvilles and the Berea Blue Sox filled up Pool A. Oswego Cats from Chicago, Portland Rockets and Yorkville filled out Pool B. The Chiefs opened up against Buffalo and saw a night of what they had seen all year. Runners on base but no timely hitting. Chappy put the Chiefs on the board with a dinger to right field as the lead was cut to 3-1. A single by Tilley and a ground out plated him as the score is now 3-2. But the Orvilles squish a lead off 2b by Mason as they strand him at Second Base. One of 7 runners left on base that night. Orvilles win 3-2. Now the Chiefs have their backs to the wall as they must win out to advance. Next up would be Berea, looking for their first win and last pool play game. Shaw takes the mound and dealing like a boss. Mind you this game started Friday night and was suspensed due to lighting. Spottz leads off the 2nd with a deep drive to left for a 1 run cushion. Colin is firing now. Top of 3rd, Farmer and Newman with back to back doubles. Flamm with an RBI single as Spottz then uses a 3 wood and golfs one deep to left field again for a 2 run bomb as the lead is extended to 5-0. Berea is no match for match as he continues to mow them down. Shaw goes 7 strong innings with 11 K's, 6 of them the famous way of " can I help you, no just looking." So win 1 is done now. next game right away vs Lake Erie. Lake Erie being 2-0 is pretty much in the Semi's but no pool champion has been declared. Change of tops, warm up Matty and here we go. Well the Buckeyes must want to go 3-0 in the pool as their talented right fielder lights up Matty for a long 3 run bomb to right. Ouch. Not to be out done, the monster 1st baseman decides he wants to take a crack and sneaks one over the RF wall. So now the Chiefs are looking down the barrell of being down 4-0. Not so fast my friends. Top of 4 and here they come. After a fly out 6 straight hits plate 5 runs as the Chiefs take a 5-4 lead. Now the fun starts as Lake Erie figures that if the score holds both teams are into the semi's. Of course Buffalo is not happy when they find that out and get a little upset. Chiefs hang on and win 5-4 and set up a 3 way tie in Pool A. Oh the next part is brutal. The famous NABF tie breaker system is now used and step #4 crowns Lake Erie Pool A Champion as they scored the most runs. Now for the runner up. Mind you Chiefs and Orvilles are 2-1, both teams gave up 7 runs but the head to head tie breaker catches the Chiefs as Orville advances as runner ups. Oh man one pitch, one pitch and the homerun in the 3rd innings dooms the Chiefs of advancement. What a tough way to win and not advance but those are the rules and thats how they are written. No crying or yelling or saying they got screwed over, they screwed ourselves by losing game 1. Plain and simple. So the Chiefs finish 2-1 and conclude another fun summer of baseball. It ws alot of fun being with this group of guys as they got closer as the season wore on. Congrats to the players on a fine season and job well done. To the young college guys best of luck to you guys and hopefully you will return for 2017. To the veterans of the squad, thank you for everything and hope to see you around Christmas time. To our loyal fans, what few we have, thank you for coming out and cheering on the Team and laughing and joking with us. Makes for alot of fun. Enjoy the rest of the summer and as always "GO CHIEFS!!!!!!"
