Chris Sifford
Chris Sifford Memorial Information
On October 16, 2000, Missouri governor and Senate candidate Mel Carnahan, 66, was killed along with his son Roger, 44, and the governor's campaign adviser Chris Sifford, 36, when the Cessna 335 they were in crashed in Goldman, Missouri. The three had been route to a rally for Carnahan's U.S. Senate campaign when the plane went down about 25 miles south of St. Louis in a hilly, wooded area.
Since 1992, Mr. Sifford served the governor in a variety of positions including press secretary, communications director, and chief of staff before stepping down this summer to direct governor Carnahan's bid for the U.S. Senate. "He was our rock," said a fellow member of the governor's staff who requested anonymity. "Everyone that knew Chris loved Chris."
Mr. Sifford was from Puxico, Missouri, a southwestern Missouri town of about 800 residents. He went to Southwest Missouri State University and worked as sportswriter for the Springfield News Leader before joining the governor's staff. Steve Koehler worked with Chris at the paper. "He was the kind of guy who was never down; he saw the bright side of things. He never let life pass him by without making a wisecrack about things," Koehler said. Koehler also recalled that Chris was a big Andy Griffith fan. In the newsroom, Chris and a colleague had a game to see who could name the episode first.
