PONY is an acronym for Protect Our Nation's Youth. The concept for the name originally came from boys at the local YMCA in Washington, PA and stood for "Protect Our Neighborhood Youth", but when PONY became an international program in the early 1950's the "Neighborhood" was switched to "Nation's".
What is PONY Baseball's Mission?
PONY Baseball and Softball is designed to "Protect Our Nation's Youth" by providing experiences in youth baseball and softball that will help young people grow into healthier and happier adults.
How is PONY Baseball different from Little League Baseball?
Chino Hills PONY uses multiple sites to accommodate all of our games. See our maps page for location information.
When are practices?
Practices are at the discretion of the manager, each manager is given a practice schedule and he or she will pick which day or days they will practice.
How are the boundaries determined for PONY Baseball Leagues?
League boundaries are determined by the officers and executive committee of the local league, but are subject to annual approval by the PONY Zone Director. Boundaries need not be identical for Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, Pony, Colt, and Palomino.
Can I play at CHPB if I live outside of the Chino Hills area?
PONY is very strict about boundary locations so that local programs remain intact. Boundaries are determined by where you live with your legal guardian, not where you go to school.
What are the age divisions for PONY Baseball?
PONY Baseball is organized with two-year age brackets.
The age brackets for baseball are as follows:
Shetland League - 6 and under
Pinto League - 8 and under
Mustang League - 10 and under
Bronco League - 12 and under
Pony League - 14 and under
Why does CHPB use a player draft system for Pinto level and higher?
A draft system helps to ensure that teams are balanced and one team does not dominate because it has more returning players than other teams. We will keep immediate family members (i.e. two brother ages 9 and 10 at the Mustang level) on the same team if they are in the same age level bracket. The system also allows children the opportunity to make new friends, and that goes for parents too!
Why do some kids know what team they are on before others?
We don't have enough volunteers to notify over 550 kids once the teams are selected so we rely on Coaches to make the calls and notify their players so please be patient. Some Coaches are quicker than others for various reasons. For privacy reasons we do not post team rosters on this website.
Have any Major League Baseball players participated in PONY Baseball?
Yes. There are more than 800 Major League Baseball players who are graduates of PONY Baseball. Mark McGuire, Tony Gwynn, Alex Rodriguez and J.T. Snow are just a few of the Major League players who participated in PONY Baseball. You can see a list of who played in PONY Baseball here.
