June 24th
Cherry Hill National was defeated by Cherry Hill American in their first game of tournament play. American seemed to be able to hit anything thrown at them, winning by a 10 run rule in the 4th inning.
The bright spot, and something to build on for the next game, was the back-to-back home runs by Chris Yobb and AJ Hort in the 4th inning.
We know our guys will brush this one off and be ready to bounce back against Merchantville on Thursday, June 26th.
June 26th
The last game was but a distant memory, as Cherry Hill National outlasted Merchantville 8-6 in 7 innings. Chris Yobb provided the game winning RBI in the top of the 7th, knocking in Matt Lachcik to put National ahead for good. Chris Yobb scored an insurance run when RC Rossell collected his 2nd RBI of the game. AJ Hort and Matt Hinger were the 1-2 punch on the mound for National, providing a combination of power and finesse that kept Merchantville off balance just enough to bring National even at a record of 1-1.
Chris Thomas, Matt Richezza, and Jake Johnson provided solid infield play when the team needed to get out of tough spots during the game.
June 28th
Cherry Hill National defeated Cherry Hill Atlantic 4-3, raising their record in tournament play to 2 wins and 1 loss. The game remained scoreless until the top of the 3rd inning when AJ Hort hit a grand slam over the left field fence, giving National all the offense they would need for the game.
Joey Craig pitched 5-plus strong innings, surrendering only one run. RC Rossell came in relief, and despite giving up a two-run home run, settled down and struck out the final batter to get the save. He got game-saving defensive help for the second out when Chris Yobb made a spectacular catch worthy of ESPN's Sportcenter Top 10, keeping Cherry Hill Atlantic from continuing their late game rally.
June 29th
Cherry Hill National defeated Maple Shade 6-3, completing tournament pool play with a 3-1 record. Unlike the grand slam from the last game providing all the runs, National was able to manufacture runs throughout this game.
AJ Hort, despite giving up a two-run home run in the 2nd inning, never allowed Maple Shade to put anything together beyond that.
Matt Richezza and Mike Juan each collected two RBIs, while Aaron Hacker and Matt Hinger each had one - Mike, Aaron, and Matt H. providing the timely hits that led to a four-run inning.
Matt Hinger came in relief of AJ Hort to get the save.
June 30th
Cherry Hill National will play Haddon Township in the first game of the double elimination round on July 2nd, 6pm, at Maple Shade.
July 2nd
Whew!! This National team certainly doesn't make it easy for themselves, but they definitely have the market cornered on the dramatic. Losing 6-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning, with two outs, National stormed back with a 7-run inning, culminating in Chris Yobb's walk off grand slam to end the game. Chris struggled at the plate early in the game, but erased all that with a salami that easily cleared the right field fence.
Joey Craig and Matt Hinger shared pitching duties, and held Haddon Twp.'s potent offense back just enough to come away with the victory, 8-6.
With the win, Cherry Hill National will face Cherry Hill American on July 5th,
7 pm, at Haddon Twp. Little League. It will be a rematch from a game played on June 24th, in which Cherry Hill American won by....well, a lot.
Let's go National...it's payback time!!!
July 5th
Well, payback was not to be this time. Cherry Hill American jumped out to a three run lead in the 1st inning and never looked back. National got to within one run in the top of the 2nd off RBIs from RC Rossell and Mike Juan, but American had their bats going strong again, winning 12-2 in a shortened game.
National will play Haddon Twp. at Haddonfield Little League on July 6th at 6:30 pm. The winner will go on to face Cherry Hill American in the District 13 Championship.
