Fourth Annual World Challenger Jamboree Set for Spring 2009

By Communcations Division
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
January 30, 2009

Virginia District 8 will host the fourth annual “Challenger Little League Baseball World Jamboree” May 8-10, 2009 at the Azalea Little League Complex in Norfolk, Va. The jamboree will include games, tours, picnics and other special events.

All the details about the Jamboree, including information on how your league can take part, can be found in the Worldwide Challenger Jamboree information packet. Teams are currently registering, and to date, four teams from outside the United States have committed to attending the Jamboree.

A world-wide Challenger Division jamboree was the concept of Jake Hardison, Virginia State Coordinator and District 8 Administrator. A dedicated supporter and longtime proponent of the Challenger Division, Mr. Hardison began the “Challenger Tournament and Fun Weekend” in 1992, featuring 16 teams. The inaugural jamboree in 2005 was an expansion of the Challenger weekend, and drew nearly 100 teams from throughout the United States. Last year, nearly 100 teams from throughout the United States and several other countries participated in the Jamboree.

In 1989, Little League launched its Challenger Division to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy and participate in the game of baseball. Disabled children from the ages of 5-18 are eligible to participate. Challenger baseball features “buddies” who help their partners by assisting the players when needed.

For more information on the 4th Annual Worldwide Challenger Jamboree download the Worldwide Challenger Jamboree information packet. To register a team, contact Jake Hardison, Virginia District 8 Administrator, at: 757-497-0113; or e-mail: Challenger@va8ll.org.

In 2008, nearly 1,900 teams and more than 27,000 children participated in the Little League Challenger Division.
