Des Moines Catholic Athletics: League News: Catholic Basketball League turns 50
Catholic Basketball League turns 50The Catholic Basketball League, (formerly known as the Parochial League) is now over 50 years old. The brainchild of George Cordaro many years ago, the Parochial League played half court games on Saturday mornings at the "old Dowling" and the Jewish Community Center. The future stars of Dowling Catholic now play games all over the city in beautiful facilities provided by member schools. Dowling Catholic continues to open its doors for the youth of Des Moines.
Thousands of Catholic youth have participated each winter for the opportunity to display their talents. Before the Bulls and Jazz, Bobby Hansen delighted the fans at Christ the King. Jennie Lillis, played at St Pius on several undefeated teams before taking her skills and love of the game to the University of Iowa. Ally Thrall is currently playing for Creighton University as a sophomore. Former St. Pius players Jessica Katch and Chelsea Wirtz lace them up for St. Thomas.
Everyone is invited to play. Come out and cheer on the kids.
