Cathedral-Chatard Hockey Club Goes 2-1 in Canada
The Cathedral-Chatard Blues enjoyed a successful trip 'way up north' to Windsor, ON over the weekend of January 13th - 15th, by posting a winning record of 2-1 against teams from the Windsor area. The Friday night game proved to be a huge challenge, facing a really strong Belle River High School team just after completing our 6-1/2 hour charter bus ride to Belle River Ice Arena. The boys kept it close for the majority of two periods, eventually falling prey to rubbery legs and a very solid Belle River squad 7-0.
But Saturday was a new day and offered a new challenge against another strong team, Brennan High School. Jordan Logan got the Blues on the board with a power play goal midway through the 2nd period to tie the game at one apiece, with Conor Sweeney and Dustin Rhodes both assisting on the goal. Brennan score two more goals to take a 3-1 lead before Nick Mpistolarides scored on a nifty pass from Rhodes to get the game closer at 3-2. Less than a minute later Sweeney sniped a shot from the far left outer circle to tie the game just before the 3rd period, with James Kirchgraber assisting on that power play goal. In the 3rd period the Blues got down 5-3 before the momentum started to swing. Jackson Eaton netted a power play goal from the slot on a play set up by pretty passes from Kirchgraber and Rhodes. Still down 5-4 with under two minutes left in the game, goaltender Bob Mooney was at his best in net, thwarting several shots by the boys from Brennan. Then Matthew Broyles tickled the twine on assists from Mpistolarides and Sam Cavender to tie the game with 1:25 left. With all of the momentum now on the side of the Blues, they were not to be denied, as James Kirchgraber scored the game-winner on a pass from Mpistolarides with 0:29 left on the clock. The Blues hung on the remaining seconds with good defense to seal the victory 6-5.
Sunday's early morning game at 7:30am saw the Blues taking on River Side HS for their 3rd and final game of the weekend. John Yaczik got the boys in Blue going early with a short-handed goal on assists by Broyles and Rhodes. With goaltender David McCloud patrolling the pipes and turning away shot after shot, the Blues notched their 2nd goal of the game with Kirchgraber scoring off a pass from Eaton. Down 3-2, the Blues tied the game later in the 2nd when JJ Freudenberg lifted a shot past the River Side netminder to tie the game. Logan and Cavender both contributed with assists on that goal. In the 3rd period the Blues buckled down and scored two more goals, one each by Mpistolarides and Rhodes to complete the scoring, with assists from Broyles and Andrew Christe on the first goal of the period, and Sweeney and Mpistolarides getting the assists on the final goal of the contest. The final score was 5-3 for the Blues, which made for a happy bus ride back to the States.
