Current Events...

February 27,2008

No dice :-( Seems like this illness/cold/whatever it is wants to hang for longer than it is welcome. I am sorry to disappoint everyone. I need to get better and increase my energy though.I will keep everyone updated on when practice will resume.

Thanks.

February 25, 2008

This winter has been rough! First a broken leg now a bad bad cold! Tonight I have a district meeting with other PE teachers so practice will be cancelled. Besides that I have been with a bad cold and I'm trying to start practice! Wednesday is a-go for now. I'll see how I feel. Thanks for your patience.

I am free of the walking boot!! YAY! I hope you all have been running to stay in shape because I'm going to need a lot of work to get my fitness back! My right ankle is a bit tight but it feels better and better each morning. Practice will re-start February 20th due to no school on Feb 18th.

January 18, 2008

Very Happy New Year to all! For christmas, I got a broken fibula! Running team will resume on February 18th, 2008 unless my doctor tells me otherwise. It'll be 7 weeks since the injury by then so I think I should be healed! Thanks for your patience and support. KEEP RUNNING TO STAY IN SHAPE!

I will be ordering Running Team shirts for the students this spring. Races are still planned; Bolder Boulder, and some other 5ks. I'll keep things posted especially as soon as the weather turns warmer.

December 13, 2007

Ah, it's been too long since the last update. Well, the Colorado snow and ice has swooped in. The roads have started to clear a bit and if we dress right, running outside can still be safe. The kids really need to be prepared for cold weather runs. Layers, hats, gloves, running tights with pants over, are just some ideas of what to wear. If it is too cold for outside recess, I believe it could be too cold for running outside. I think if it's below 40 degrees, we probably should not run outside. :)

I am working on an indoor plan and will let all know asap.

The2007 Resolution Run is in Fort Collins on December 31st on CSU campus. Like the Scream Scram, it is a night run and is very fun. Christmas lights shine on the path, plenty of people cheering, and warm drinks after a good 5k race. Starbucks is right around the corner too! I'll send out info on that next week to get an idea who wants to go.

Keep running,

Coach Zook

The Scream Scram was a HUGE success! Dakota, Jacob, Chris, and Cole ALL RAN A FANTASTIC race!! Coach didn't do too bad either! :-) Dakota, Jacob and Coach Zook came in around the 28 minute mark. Cole and Chris slammed the race with a fantastic time of a little over 30 minutes. AWESOME RUN!!!!

The Scream Scram 5k is coming up in Denver, Washington Park, at 6pm on Friday, 10/26/07. The link to register is above. If you register before Friday it is $15 for kids 12 and under. Anyone 13 and over is $25. We need to leave CVA around 4:45pm. We will also return here as well. I will have my cell phone with me all race day if you need anything. I will make a list of parent phone numbers. We will call you when we are leaving Denver. I imagine it will be around 6:30p. We should be back to CVA by 7pm or 7:30pm. I know I emailed out 7:30p or 8:00p but I don't think it'll last that long!

Students need to bring money for food if they would like to purchase any food after the race. We can make a stop at Wendy's or something quick to eat. If they are registering on race day, they also need to bring $19. They should bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothes/comfortable costume to run 3 miles.

I can  accommodate 4 runners in my car; that's excluding me. Let me know who will be coming so we can plan accordingly. Right now we have Cole Lewis, Jacob Perez, Chris Davis, and Dakota Bingham who have expressed serious interest. If there is more, I need to know as soon as possible so we can arrange for another driver, if possible.

Keep running,

Coach Zook

GREAT ideas for breakfast...for starters, eat SOMETHING. Pop Tarts may not be the breakfast of champions but it's better than nothing. Breakfast helps you feel better, think better, and just as importantly, perform better. It's no joke breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Whoever said that in the first place was absolutely right for more reasons than they may have known at the time. Last but not least, DRINK WATER ALL THE TIME. The second you literally feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

1. 2 slices whole wheat toast with natural peanut butter and honey (or jelly)

2. 2 eggs, a bowl of cereal with low or soy milk, and berries on top.

3. Oatmeal (not instant-you lose fiber content) with 3 tsp brown sugar, lowfat milk, and 1/2 cup of blueberries

4. 2 slices lowfat cheese and turkey bacon on a toasted english muffin

5. Apple and peanut butter

6. whole grain, low fat waffles with a little butter and light syrup, and berries on top

Eat up, Runners. You can't skimp on food when you run miles and miles each week. You are considered ENDURANCE athletes. Fuel up with GOOD food; vegetables, fruit, oats, lean meat, lowfat dairy products, to name a few. The quality of food is sometime more important than the quantity of food you are eating.

GOOD NEWS! Chocolate Milk is one of the BEST recovery drinks after runs! Even better than the hoity-toity protein-recovery powder mixes you can buy for $60 a jug. Not worth it. The protein in the milk and the sugar in the chocolate is a good balance for an immediate refuel after runs. Make sure you eat something substantial later.

Until next time....and in the meantime, eat BREAKFAST!
