2008 Canton Baseball Coaching Staff

Varsity Coaches:

Head Coach:

Mark Blomshield-  Coach Blomshield is entering his 8th season coaching  baseball for the Canton Chiefs baseball squad after 6 years with the j.v. team.   Blomshield also served as an assitant coach for Portage Central High School (1998), Unionville-Sebewaing High School(1999),  Salem High School(2001) and Canton football (2003-2005) before directing his efforts towards Canton Baseball  in 2002.  He has been a physical education teacher in the Plymouth-Canton Community School Distict for 9 years after graduating from Western Michigan University with a BA in Physical Education.  He most recently received his master's degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University (07) . 

Coach Blomshield played baseball for Bay City John Glenn High School (93) and went on to play college baseball for legendary coaches Fred Decker and Rich Maloney (U of M) at Western Michigan University from 1994-1997.  While at Western he logged 200 innings pitched, 60 appearances and set a school record for appearances in a single season (26).  After college he played baseball for several different semi-pro teams including the U.S. National team, which competed in the Netherlands for the World Championships in 1998 vs. Cuba, Puerto Rico, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and the Netherlands.  He was also a long time player for the nationally ranked Stan Musial team Flint Halo Foutch (2000-2007), which won the 2005 Stan Musial World Series in which Blomshield was awarded pitcher of the tournament with victories in game 1 versus St. Petersburg, Florida and in the final game 7 versus Canton, Ohio. 

Blomshield resides in Canton with his wife Lisa and has three children Ryan, Lindsey  and Jenna. 

Assistant Varsity

Jonny Johnson:  Coach Johnson joins the Canton baseball staff in his third year and will assist with the pitchers and be the bench coach.  Coach Johnson is also a Canton Alumni (2000) and went on to play college baseball at Henry Ford C.C. and Siena Heights.  "Coach Johnson brings a wealth of baseball pitching knowledge to the program and will be the needed assistance to help develop these young pitchers into prospects and developing a championship program". Steve Howard:   Coach Howard joins the Chiefs in his first year as assistant coach and will be working with the hitters and outfielders.  Coach played college baseball at George Mason University and went on to play several years of pro baseball as an outfielder.

Jim Wisniewski:  Coach Wiz is entering his first year as an assistant for the Chiefs.   Jim played college baseball in Alabama and has been affiliated with the Chiefs since 1999.  He will also take over the catching coach duties and work with the baserunners.

 John Wright:  Coach Wright begins his  7th years coaching baseball in the school district and has also assisted coaching the chiefs football team since 2006.  Coach Wright has been a varsity assistant for Canton and Plymouth High Schools as well as head Freshman coach for the chiefs in 2005.   Coach Wright graduated from Canton H.S. in 1996 and went to play three years of college baseball at Grand Valley State University before changing gears and becoming involved in coaching.   John has also mangaged and coached Canton's summer program and other high profile travel ball squads.  He brings a excellent background knowledge of hitting to the program.  "John is our program hitting coach and has done a nice job implementing his hitting philosophy with our kids to get the most out of them physically and mentally".  Blomshield

Justin Latin:  Coach Latin is entering his first year as assistant j.v.  coach.   Justin is a 2004 graduate of Canton High School and went on to play college baseball at Henry Ford Community College and Madonna

 

Freshman: 

Brian Shelson:   Coach Shelson is entering his first year coaching for the Canton Chiefs.   Brian spent the last several seasons coaching football and baseball at Grosse Pointe South High School and bring a good resume of overall fundamental baseball to the program. He is a graduate of Pinconning High School and is a first year biology teacher at Canton.
