Conrad Rosch records 5th place State Finish! ** Click here to view the pictures
Conrad Rosch became the 3rd Canal Winchester wrestler to stand on the podium at the OHSAA Wrestling Championships by recording an outstanding 5th place finish in the 140 lb. weight class. Rosch joins Seth Morton (twice), and brother Harrison Rosch as Indians state placers. Conrad finished the year with a tremendous 50-7 record. The 50 wins sets the school record for most wins in a season. He finished the tournament with a 6-3 decision over Mitchell Beemer (37-9) Wapakoneta. Senior Harrison Rosch (45-8) 160, and Sophomore Brady Hutchins (42-10) 112 fell just one match short of reaching the podium themselves. Rosch topped Anthony Nadeja (Hubbard) in the 1st round, but then fell to eventual champion Kyle Ryan (St. Paris Graham) in the quarterfinals. The elder Rosch concluded an outstanding athletic career at Canal Winchester. In addition to being a standout for the Indians football squad, Rosch earlier this season became only the 3rd member of the "100 Win Club" in the history of the wrestling program. Brady Hutchins recorded an exciting upset win over 2 time state placer B.J. Miller (45-6) Defiance in the opening round. Hutchins trailed 4-0 with 30 seconds left in the match, but scored a reversal and then ended things with a pin (his 29th of the season). Hutchins then fell in consecutive matches to eventual state placers to end his fine sophomore season....one win short of reaching the podium. Joe Boswell (29-21) was the first ever freshman Indians wrestler to qualify for the state tournament. Boswell's post-season run included multiple upsets over highly ranked wrestlers to reach the Schottenstein Center. Joe had an unfortunate draw in having to face the eventual 4th & 5th place state finishers in two tough losses to end his season. Indians post 6th Place Heath District Finish - Qualify 4 to State 2/28/09 ** Click here to view the pictures
The Canal Winchester wrestling team finished in 6th place at the 39-team D2 Heath District Wrestling Tournament held on February 27th & 28th. In the process, the team qualified 4 wrestlers to the 2009 OHSAA Wrestling Championships which begin this coming Thursday, March 5th at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.
The top 4 finishers in each weight class at the Heath Tournament punched their tickets to the state tourney. Harrison Rosch (Sr. 44-6) was a District runner-up at 160 lbs. Rosch was outstanding before falling in the title match to Brett Mellor (46-1) from River View. Brady Hutchins (Soph. 41-8) pinned Mike Mercer (East Liverpool) in the 3rd place match at 112 lbs. after falling 4-1 to eventual champ Kyle Warner (Uhrichsville Claymont) in a tough semi-final match. Conrad Rosch (Jr. 46-5) recorded a 4th place finish at 140 lbs. He was forced to forfeit his 3rd place match after suffering an injury in an earlier semi-final bout, but should be ready to go on Thursday. In the preliminary rounds, Rosch knocked off former state champ Cody Garbrandt (Uhrichsville Claymont) in a thrilling match. Freshman Joe Boswell (29-19) shocked the competition for a second straight weekend at 119 lbs. Last Saturday at the Amanda Clearcreek sectional, Boswell captured the title as an unseeded wrestler. This weekend at Heath, he continued his late season surge by topping highly regarded Preston Foster (East Liverpool) in the state qualifying match on his way to an impressive 4th place finish. The 6th place district finish, 5 district placers, and 4 state qualifiers were all program bests in the short 7 season history of the wrestling program at Canal Winchester. Congratulations to Coach Trent Brooks, his staff, and all the wrestlers on a job well done...... Link to results: http://www.baumspage.com/cedist/he2/res09.htm
