Senior Nathan Pressley became the 4th Indians wrestler (joining Seth Morton 2X, Harrison Rosch, and Conrad Rosch 2X) to reach the medals stand at the OHSAA state tournament with his 6th place finish. Pressley (31-9) started things off in the opening round with a 3:46 pin of Valley View's Justin Blue. Next in the quarter-finals he suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Zach Higgins from Alliance Marlington. The Indians heavyweight bounced right back though to defeat Collin Vozar of Medina Highland, 5-4. The momentum continued Friday evening as Pressley thrashed Greydon Pavlik (Ravenna) in an easy 7-2 decision, even though he suffered an arm injury during the match. Saturday morning brought the consolation semi-finals, and a very tough 3-1 loss to Carlos Lugo from Akron SVSM. Pressley's fine post-season run, and his career, then came to and end as he was forced to forfeit the 5th/6th place match due to the injury suffered the previous evening. Brady Hutchins (125 lbs.) was making his 3rd trip to the state tournament. The senior captain started in great fashion with a 1st round pin of former state placer Keaton Webb (Miami Trace) in 5:41. The victory was Hutchins 50th of the season which ties him for the school record for wins in a season with former Indians standout Conrad Rosch. The pin added to his school records......41 season.....113 career. The season pin mark puts him in 9th place all-time in Ohio wrestling history, and the career total is 12th. In the quarter-finals, Hutchins (50-8) lost a heart-breaking 8-6 thriller to eventual champion Tyler Hackworth (Oak Harbor). A short time later he faced Brodie Scherer (River View) is a consolation bout. The match was tied 1-1 with 20 seconds remaining when a failed takedown attempt led to a 6-1 loss......ending Hutchins career.....once again only 1 victory from reaching the podium. His final career mark ends at 156-48.....1 win off Seth Morton's school record for career wins. Joe Boswell was making his 2nd consecutive trip to "the show." He also qualified as a freshman two years ago....the only Indians 9th grader to ever wrestle in a state tournament. Last season, Boswell did not wrestle, as he and his family were living in Italy. The Indians 130 lb. junior had high hopes for the state tournament fresh off his District Championship but suffered the misfortune of coming down with a serious illness on the eve of the big event. He lost his 1st round match to Dalton Nicely from Wauseon by a 22-8 score. Boswell then had to come right back and wrestle again in the consolation round.....falling just short in a very exciting match to Chris Schulz (Indian Lake)....12-10, which ended his season. Shortly after that match ended, Boswell (42-8) was on his way to the emergency room to have his illness treated. State Brackets: http://www.baumspage.com/ohsaa/brackets/2011/bracket2.pdf

Canal Winchester wrestled to a stellar 5th place team finish at the D2 Columbus East District Tournament that was held Feb 25th & 26th. The top 5 result was the program's best ever finish in the combined Central/East 46-school district. The Indians had 4 placers among its 9 entrants at the district tourney led by champs in the 130 and 285 weight classes: junior Joe Boswell (42-6) and senior Nathan Pressley (28-6) respectively. Boswell pinned Max Rohskopf (West Holmes) in his finals match and Pressley took out Kirk Willis (Granville) by a 16-9 score. The Indians heavyweight was able to turn the tables on Willis after losing the sectional final to him only 1 week prior. Boswell won a thrilling overtime decision overly highly ranked Al Caserta (Olentangy) in the semi-finals. Senior captain Brady Hutchins (49-6) was a runner-up at 125 losing a tough 7-4 decision in the finals to Johnny McComas (Beaver Local). Hutchins defeated Brodie Scherer (River View) who was 36-1 at the time, in the semis to reach his title match. The Indians trio qualified to wrestle in the state tournament which will be held at The Ohio State University….March 3-5.Junior Dalton Tullius (30-13) reached the podium with a 6th place finish. He reached the semi-finals, but then lost 2 tough decisions to fall just 1 victory short of a trip to the state tourney. Sophomore Justin Emmons won twice at 119 in a very fine showing....losing in a close 6-4 decision to state qualifier Conner Blacka (Jonathan Alder) in his final consolation match. Junior 152 Royce Calloway (26-23), and Sophomore 112 Nick Brady (32-16) each posted a victory by pin in the tournament to help pad the team point total. The Canal Winchester Wrestling team placed 11 wrestlers and advanced 9 at the D2 Licking Heights Sectional held on Saturday, February 19th. The Indians finished a close 2nd to Licking Valley in the team race as the team had one of its best performances of the season to date. The other 3 district qualifiers were: Junior 135 Dalton Tullius (28-10), Junior 152 Royce Calloway (25-21), and Sophomore 215 Max Lacey (20-17). Tullius managed to qualify despite suffering a serious leg injury 2 weeks ago at the Watkins Memorial Tournament. Seniors ….160 Kyle Rohrig (6th place) and 189 Eric Banks (29-18) saw their Indians’ careers come to an end. Both lost heart-breaking 1 point decisions in the district qualifying consolation round. Banks bounced back with a pin in the 5th place match to grab the district alternate slot. If any of the 4 placers above him is unable to wrestle next Friday, Banks would get that spot on the district bracket.

Canal Winchester Puts 5 on Medals Stand at Marion Elgin ** Click here to see the pix
The Canal Winchester wrestlers posted a top-10 finish Saturday at the 25-team Marion Elgin Invitational Tournament which featured many of the top teams in the state. The Indians had 4 open weight classes so 10th place was a very respectable finish for the squad. It was a grueling event, with most wrestlers having 8 matches over the two-day event. Brady Hutchins (125) and Dalton Tullius (130) both were tourney runner-ups. Hutchins (26-4 overall) pinned #1 state-ranked and projected D2 champion (Tre Smith – Chagrin Falls Kenston) in the semi-finals on his way to a 7-1 weekend record (6 pins). He fell in the finals to 3-time state runner-up Tyler Heminger (Galion Northmor) who was voted the “Most Valuable Wrestler.” Tullius (16-6) was unseeded but knocked off the #2 seed (Bobby Leitwein – Nelsonville) in pool action on Friday night. He continued pounding his way through the field to reach the Saturday night finals where he lost a very tough 2-0 decision to the #1 seed (Drew McDougle – Gahanna) to also finish 7-1 for the tournament. The Indians had 3 other placers: Nick Brady (112) was 4th, Joe Boswell (135) was 7th, and Jake Sharp (103) was 8th. Brady (15-9) had a very impressive win on Saturday morning as he soundly defeated the #1 seed (Alec Durbin – Ashland Crestview) in the 112 lb weight class by a 16-4 score. Boswell (18-5) had a very successful tournament as he recorded 5 victories in one of the tournament’s toughest weight classes. Sharp was in his first varsity action of the season at 103 lbs, and pinned his way through his pool on Friday evening. The Indians had 3 other wrestlers advance through the Friday night round-robin pools: Nathan Pressley (285), Eric Banks (215), and Royce Calloway (160). Pressley and Banks each tied with the other two participants in their Saturday morning pools (1-1 records). Unfortunately, they both failed to advance to the 8-man championship brackets when they lost heart-breaking criteria tie breakers. This also was a tough break for the team, as valuable potential team points were lost. Even though he did not place, Pressley (10-4) finished the weekend strong at 7-1. Banks (17-9) topped #1 seed and eventual champ (Joe Whisler – Ashland Crestview) in a tremendous match on his way to 5 tournament victories. Calloway also had a very fine showing with 5 victories himself. Four wrestlers failed to advance through the Friday night round-robin pools, but bounced back to post strong showings in the consolations. Freshman Emmanuel Barnes (16-8) won all 5 of his Saturday matches at 103 lbs. Zach Snyder (145), Max Lacey (215), and Chris Ritter (189) all chipped in with wins…..Snyder and Lacey winning 3 times each. Final Team Standings:
