CANADIAN MASTERS RESULTS AND 2009 CHAMPIONS BELOW
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
A great and exciting conclusion of the Round Robin had FOUR (4) mens teams tied for 1st place with 6 wins and 3 L's each . A four team playoff scenario was set up by virtue of who beat who in the RR. NL and MN were named 1 and 2 and ONT and BC were named 3 and 4. The skills competition ( won by Ontario) did not come into play.
1st - NL........( 2W - 1L, won over MB+ON in RR)
2nd - MB......( 2W - 1L, lost to NL, W over ON+BC in RR)
3rd - ON ......( 1W - 2L, won over BC in RR)
4th - BC.......( 1W - 2L , lost to ON in RR)
The two semi-finals were set as listed:
1st vs 4th = NL vs BC
2nd vs 3rd = MB vs ON
The 2008 Mens Champions (Pugh-BC) and the 2007 Champions (Edmondson-ONT) were in the playoffs both shooting for a 2nd Canadian Championship Title. Team Manitoba beat both ONT and BC to capture the 2009 Championship. BC was 2nd and NL and ONT ended up in the 3rd spot. The most improved team (NL) moved from the back of the pack in 2008 to 1st in the 2009 RR and was shooting for the finals !

Lee Morrison had won 6 Saskatchewan Masters titles and in 2009 won her 1st Candian Masters Title. Morrison was under the pressure of playing on her home ice.
Team Alberta (Turner/Wagner/Toews-the 2007 Canadian Champions) were looking for a 2nd title but came up one rock short. Team Ontario ( Betty Bush -2006 Masters Runner-up) was searching for her 1st Canadian Championship title. Hungry teams all - curling on the good Nutana Club ice made for spectacular shotmaking. The knowlegable Nutana curling fans commented the Masters Play was as good as they ever get to see ! Saskatoon has hosted many Canadian Championship events over the years.

Notes aboutWomens Provincial play
Cameron Wins Nova Scotia Provincial Masters Title 2009
Yvonne Martin, who won both the women’s Masters and senior women’s provincial titles in 2008, dropped a 7-6, extra-end decision to Margaret Cameron of Mayflower in a sudden-death final match . Cameron was unbeaten entering play on finals day, so Martin had to defeat her twice to claim her fourth provincial masters title to go with her four provincial senior titles.
Martin won Wednesday morning’s first sudden-death match 7-6, scoring the winning point in the eighth and final end, but was unable to complete the sweep in the afternoon draw despite leading 6-2 after four ends.
"It was an unbelievable competition," Martin said following her return home Thursday afternoon. "Every game we played went down to the last rock. We lost on a measure twice and one of the games we won was also (decided) on a measure." Martin said she and her team played really well, but Cameron and her teammates "played everything just about perfect.

LEE MORRISON WINS 6TH PROVINCIAL MASTERS TITLE as SKIP Lee Morrison beat Crystal Frisk, 7-5 in Sunday's final. Morrison earlier beat Frisk, 9-4 in the 1 vs 2 Page Playoff to advance while Frisk rebounded with a win over Merle Kopach, 7-1 in the semi-final. Kopach won the 3 vs 4 game against Sandra Pederson, 8-3. Info courtesy of SaskCurl Webnews

Smith defeated Whalen- 7-2 in the semi-final to earn her berth to the final. Jones scored pairs in the first, third and sixth ends and it proved to be too much for Smith. Canadian Masters Competition - Northern Ontario
Just thought you might like a “human interest” story, re our team.I live in Blind River, my third lives in Sioux Lookout and our lead and second live in Thunder Bay – we are 16 hours apart and 2 time zones, (not to mention the 4 hour drive off the Trans-Canada highway to Sioux Lookout), - total distance is about 1200 kms, one way!We had never practiced together, never thrown a rock as a team, and I did not even know the name of the front end, until we met in Sioux Lookout.
However, we “clicked”, won 5 games in a row, (none were blow-outs, most were down to final rock) and won the N.O. Masters Championship.Perhaps not a recommended way of forming a team, but I think it proves that desire, compatibility and team dynamics go a long way in winning.
We truly feel we represent the Northern Ontario Curling Association. Maymar Gemmell
