CanAm Bowl XI Report

Friday Night Lights is a Huge Success!

Both teams were introduced at 8:15 pm in front of a large crowd at Central Butte, SK to set the stage for CanAm Bowl XI.  Players and coaches were excited to finally get to the game after a tough four days of practice.  It was going to be interesting to see how each team approached strategy and how well the game plans would work against a totally unknown opponent.  Following the national anthems it was time for kick off.

Team USA kicked short and recovered the ball setting up a great opportunity to take an early lead.  Team USA were stuffed on all three tries from the one yard line.  Team Canada took over and marched the ball out to midfield.  The two teams traded short drives until Canada opened the scoring with a two yard touchdown run on the naked bootleg by quarterback Grayson Williams.  Joel Fehr converts and the Canadians lead 8-0.  Canada would score on their next possession as well, but the play was called back on a penalty.  Team USA blocked a punt to set up a chance for a score from midfield with just under a minute to go in the half, but the Canadian defense held them out of the endzone when Dylan Redlick picked off a pass inside the ten yard line.  The first half ended in with an 8-0 score in favor of Canada.

The second half opened under the lights with a short drive by team USA and Tyler Horvath sacked Jansa causing a fumble which was also recovered by Horvath to set the Canadians up on the 44 yardline.  The Canadians wasted no time when Williams threw a bomb to Thomas Riopka for a touchdown; convert by Fehr and its 16-0.  Team USA would answer when QB Jansa threw deep to Neihues off the naked bootleg to brng the US six points closer.  Team Canada scored again when Jeff Ewen made a site adjustment to the defense and beat a defender to score on an 18 yard touchdown run; convert Fehr and the score is 24-6.  Team Canada continued to roll as Williams hooked up with Nunweiller for a 15 yard touchdown pass and run; convert Fehr.  Team USA battled back and got the ball to the three yard line, but the Canadian defense held again and the score remained 32-6.  Nunweiller would score on great run with excellent down field blocking as he scamperd 58 yards to put the Canadians up 40-6.  The USA threatens again, but Tristan is stripped by Dzurka and fumbles on the two yard line and another opportunity is missed.  However the USA kept coming and Jansa hooked up with Tristan for a 33 yard pass and run; convert by Johnson; score 40-14.  Nunweiller runs on third down after a bad snap and gets the first down setting up Ewen’s second touchdown as he dodged several would be tacklers on his way to the endzone from fifty yards out.  Fehr missed his only convert as the ball strikes the uprite and the score is 46-14.  Team USA hopes ended as Redlick picked off another pass and team Canada ran out the clock to win the game.  The series now stands at USA 7 Canada 4, but Canada has won 3 of the last 4 meetings.

Post game included MVP honors being handed out to Jace Walker from Aurther Nebraska and Dylan Redlick from Outlook Saskatchewan.
