California D51 Little League Umpires: Welcome

Monday, February 20
California District 51 Little League Umpires

If only we were born ready.

> Little League volunteer umpires start their experience to umpire by hoping to do the best they can with no experience to begin with.
Since they have the courage to step up and do the job, does not mean they are there for the abuse that often and unnecessarily follows the umpire.
They also hope that the parents in the stands appreciate that the umpire is giving their personal time to work with the children of these parents. A little league umpire asks for nothing more.

> This could have been the beginning of a long time umpire experience for their league, if only they were not shouted off and discouraged before gaining the knowledge and test of time to become a better umpire.
If only the parents would encourage the new umpires as they should be encouraging their young children.

> We often hear, where are the umpires? How come we do not have real umpires for our games?

> Little League is a community based organization and run by the parents of the children involved.
We can ask ourselves, “How many of these parents were experienced umpires when they started?”
The experienced umpires that took the abuse from the parents did so for the kids. And that is a very unique and RARE person indeed.
But is it really necessary to abuse the volunteer umpire? Never.
That abuse is observed and heard by the children. Is this the behavior we really want these children to learn and practice? No.
They deserve to be children learning better qualities from those around them.

> Players play better over time  Players are not born ready to play.

> Parents parent better over time.> Parents are not born ready to parent.

> Umpires umpire better over time.> Umpires are not born ready to umpire.

> When these impressionable children are at a ball game, what do we want them to hear and see?

NEW RULES QUESTION POSTED ON MAY 21, SCROLL DOWN TO ANSWER

All certified umpires with "EVEN" numbers will need to take there-certification test at some point this year. This test must be taken every two years if you wish to be considered to work Sectional tournaments and above. Sometimes, if more than one umpire is deserving of an assignment, the determining factor on who gets the assignment is nothing more than who has kept up with re-certification. You have the entire regular season to pass the test and get it back to Myrle.
