CYXC: Welcome

Welcome Canton YMCA runners and parents!

Thanks for your interest in participating in our cross country program! Our club is for boys and girls ages 8-15. The season begins in late September, with our first meet tentatively scheduled Sept. 20. Race distances vary from 2000 meters (1.4 miles), 3000 meters (1.88 miles), 4000 meters (2.5 miles), and 5000 meters (3.1 miles), depending on the runner's age.
Practices will be held 4 days per week at either Boling Park (behind Cherokee H.S.) or Sequoyah Park (near Hwy 140 & E. Cherokee Rd). Practice days and times are Mon, Tues, Thurs. at 5:30 and Saturdays at 4:30. We'll be at Boling Park Tuesdays & Thursdays and Sequoyah Park Mondays & Saturdays. Click 'practices' at the menu to the left & you should see more info about our practice schedule. Click 'schedules' & you should see our meet schedule.
We will compete in USA Track & Field (USATF) sanctioned meets as well as local meets in the North Ga. & metro Atlanta area.
No prior running experience or ability is required and beginners (and their parents!) are encouraged to participate.
Registration fee is $100 for YMCA members and $125 for non members. This includes uniforms, race entry fees, and insurance.
Feel free to contact Coach Sanford (770-490-1202) or Coach Albee ( 770-421-3084) for more information.

We do practice if it's raining (unless it's a Monsoon), but obviously will not run if there is lightning. We won't cancel a practice until very close to the practice time.

**Please also note the following request from one of the conferences we run with, ACCE, for volunteers to assist with hosting our 9/27, & 10/11 meets:

This is my annual plea for volunteers to work at the cross country meets.  It takes 16-18 people to successfully run the meets. My desire is to make sure the meets start on time, finish on time and are managed professionally.  I need your help to make this happen.

Here are the roles:

Finish Line

2 Judges (determine order of finish)2 Handlers (pass out finish cards, keep runners in order after finishing the race)

4 Timers (2 call out time; 2 record the time)

Scorers Table

4-6 Scorers (determine team scores and meet results).

Course

4 Course Marshals (ensure athlete safety; monitor course)

Volunteers

This year I would like to assign schools to provide the volunteers.  I will try to pair the larger schools with the smaller schools so the distribution is more even.  Ideally it will work like this: four schools will be assigned to each meet.  Those four schools will provide 4 adult volunteers for that meet.

Please note:  in the past there have been volunteers who have volunteered at each meet for the same role. That is absolutely alright and they are completely welcome to continue doing so!  In fact, I would like to have a person in charge of each of the volunteer roles.  This person would train anyone new at this role and also be the “go to” person for new volunteers the morning of the meets.  It would also take a large burden off myself before each meet.  If you do have a volunteer who wants to be the “Lead Handler” (judge, scorer, etc.), please let me know.

If you have a preference for which meet you would like your school to be assigned, please give me your 1st-3rd choices.  Every school assigned needs to provide volunteers at each meet.

*Lastly, I am in need of a volunteer to help me set-up.  That person needs to be there @6:45 a.m.  If you can volunteer for all the meets—Perfect!  If you can only help out at one meet, that’s good also.  Hopefully at each meet I’ll have someone to assist me in the set-up.

Thanks….Michael
