CYO Region 1: Welcome
Welcome to the web site for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Catholic Youth Organization's Region 1. Our Region consists of seventeen parishes located in Northeast Philadelphia.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Catholic Youth Organization is a component of the Office of Youth and Young Adults; a link to the OYYA site can be found on our "Links" page.
Our site contains information on each of the sports programs offered in Region 1, including: schedules, game results, upcoming events and more. We hope you find our site helpful and informative, and we welcome feedback and comments from our visitors.
The CYO program at the regional and parish level is staffed entirely by volunteers giving their time to help the children of our parishes learn fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship as well as our Catholic principles.
The Executive Committee for Region One is: Nick McGinty, Coordinator of Athletic Ministry; John Doherty, Assistant Coordinator of Athletic Ministry; Fran Hennessey, Coordinator of Mission & Ministry; and Mary Anderson, Communication Coordinator.
Our Region strives to follow the Archdiocese's Mission Statement, which states:
CYO Sports is one component of a parish's comprehensive youth ministry program which enables the partnership of parents, coaches, priests, religious, teachers and adult leaders to manage and support a sports program that allows youth to grow in their relationship with God and come to better understand themselves and the Catholc Faith.
Such a program:
- employs a healthy and enjoyable competition to promote the sharing of gospel values among parents, athletes and coaches.
- assists parish leadership in nourishing the emotional, spriritual, social and physical needs of young people.
- encourages young people to appreciate the gifts that they possess, and challenges them to share these gifts with their community.
- allows youth to witness the life of Christian Discipleship and in their coaches and adult leaders.
- encourages youth to become responsibile members of their faith community.

The New Year means that plans for the upcoming baseball and softball seasons are underway! The Archdiocese will hold the annual Commissoners' meetings in a few weeks, and meetings of the Region's coaches will be held in late January and early February.
More information will be coming soon, so please check back often!
Schedules for the Varsity and Junior Varsity programs in the Grade School Girls' Basketball "B" League can be downloaded by selecting the link at the bottom of this article. The schedules are in .pdf format (Adobe Reader).
Play begins on December 5 for the Varsity group and December 9 for the Junior Varsity.

It will be necessary for our league commissioners to get the e-mail addresses of every coach in his/her league and disseminate that information to everyone.
Everyone's help with this new system is greatly appreciated.

We have recently added the "Region 1 In Memoriam Page" to this site. The page remembers the passing of those who played significant roles in the Region, as well as the men and women of the Philadelphia Police Department.
The page can be accessed by selecting 'Region 1 In Memoriam" from the menu on the left-hand side of the homepage. Please be sure to say a prayer for those mentioned on the page.
The Archdiocese has announced the dates for the 2009 - 2010 CYO year on which NO athletic activities are to take place. There can be no exceptions - these dates are not to be used for practices or games!
The dates are:
November 1; All-Saints Day
December 8; Immaculate Conception
December 24 and 25; Christmas Holiday
January 1; Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God
February 14; Cardinal's Altar Server Mass
April 1 - 4; Easter Holiday
May 20; Ascension Thursday

This short Code should serve as a guide to anyone coaching in the CYO Program, and offers excellent suggestions toward being an effective Catholic coach! The Archdiocese has announced the schedule for Coaches' Orientations for the upcoming CYO year. The schedule includes a session at St. Timothy's on December 12. Please remember that all coaches and assistants must attend an orientation prior to their second season.
