Cranford PAL Wins 4th Union County Championship in a Row
Union County Wrestlers Display Talents at UCB
(Youth1) – Youth1 was on hand at Cranford High School for the 4th annual Union County Brawl wrestling tournament. The spectacular event featuring nearly 400 youth wrestlers from over a dozen teams was well organized and was a great way to kick off the 2010-2011 season.
In the elementary division, it was perennial powerhouse Cranford that took home the tournament team title with 225 points, led by Most Outstanding Wrestler, Chris Scorese. Scorese, the 73 pounder, was one of nine Cranford grapplers to win their weight class.
It was also a good day for runner up, Westfield. The Devils, 5th place finishers at last year’s tournament showed the significant improvement their wrestlers have made. Leading the way was Luke Hoerle who took home the 47 pounds crown and CJ Composto who won the 53 pounds weight class.
While the usual strong programs (Cranford, Westfield, Kenilworth, Roselle Park) turned in great showings, it was Scotch Plains and Rahway that had the best improvement from last year. Scotch Plains jumped from 8th in 2009 to 4th at this year’s tournament, while Rahway went from 9th to 7th but drastically improved upon their 15 point performance by earning 51.5 points on Sunday.
At the end of the day, Cranford earned their 4th consecutive victory at the Union County Brawl.

CJML Preview
| CRANFORD |
Over the past half decade the Cranford wrestling program has built a reputation as being one of the strongest elementary programs in the state, and 2009-2010 was a prime example of their dominance, as they won the Union County Brawl for the third consecutive year, came in 4th at the CJMWL tournament and improved their duel match record to 52-2 over the past three seasons.
If last year was any indication, the 2010-2011 Cranford PAL wrestling team will have another strong season, but their success begins with Anthony Capece, who finished 2nd at 60 lbs. at the CJMWL tournament and made their All-Star team. Also returning this season, are Chris Scorese who placed 4th in the NJ state tournament and 3rd at the CJMWL in the 63 lbs. weight class, and Brian McGovern, who placed 4th at 73 lbs. at the CJMWL tournament. Cranford will also be aided by Mike Nigro, who finished 1st at the Union County Brawl and Thomas Digovanni, who finished 2nd at the Union County Brawl in the respective weight classes.

Union County Brawl Preview
Wrestlers Ready for Union County Brawl
(Youth1) - On December 12th, over 400 student athletes from 14 wrestling teams will gather on five mats in the Cranford High School Auditorium for the fourth annual Union County Brawl.
The tournament began in 2007 with the idea of making a tournament exclusive to elementary and middle school wrestlers who are residents of Union County.
“They do a County Tournament for high school teams, so we thought it would be fun for the elementary and middle school teams as well,” says Cranford Wrestling Coach Kevin Murray.
And the idea caught on. Murray says the Union County Brawl is growing and gaining participants, both with teams and independent wrestlers, each year.
What may also be attracting more wrestlers is the Union County Brawl’s convenient schedule. Elementary school students compete from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the middle school competition from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“Parents like that we do a split session so they are not stuck all day in a gym,” says Murray.
And while parents might be pleased about the schedule, the wrestlers anticipate the competition. The Union County Brawl, with its elementary and middle school divisions, offers a superior level of well-organized competition.
With regard to the elementary division, Cranford has won the tournament for the past three years. Last year, the team dominated, beating second place Kenilworth by 56 points.
The middle school division is closer in competition, as no team has won the division title two years in a row. Last year’s champion, Roselle Park, only edged out second place Cranford by three points.
This year, Roselle Park will look to defend itself against Cranford, who is searching to become the only team to take both the elementary and middle school divisions. But one thing that competitors can be sure of, Murray says, the tournament will remain restricted to Union County wrestlers.
“We like that it’s only Union County teams. We would like to see Essex County hold a similar tournament for Essex wrestlers. And then maybe we could have our champions wrestle theirs in a dual meet.”
And with the popularity of the Union County Brawl within its own county, other counties are likely to follow suit.

Cranford Wrestling"Team First"
Cranford Wrestling Is Always Team First
(Youth1) - After every practice with the Cranford Youth Wrestling Program, the same chant is heard: “We are a family not a team, and when somebody falls, you pick them up.”
It’s a motto that has made the Cranford Youth Wrestling Program a true force to be reckoned with in New Jersey Youth Wrestling.
Cranford’s stats are impressive enough: 52-2 for dual matches in the past three seasons combined and 86-7 in the past five. Led by coach Kevin Murray, they are three-time Union County Elementary Champions. They have seven consecutive winning seasons, and with their tremendous recent growth, there may by no stopping Cranford’s success.
Around since the 1970s, Cranford Wrestling saw its biggest expansion in the past four years. Since 2006, Cranford Wrestling doubled its size, going from 55 wrestlers to 110.
According to coach Kevin Murray, 2006 was a turning point for the organization, when a change in coaching style helped the wrestlers simply enjoy wrestling more. “We made a serious effort to make the practices more fun for the novice wrestlers and more challenging for the experienced wrestlers,” he said.
And this season, the program has attracted even more wrestlers, achieving its highest membership to date. “Success of the program is all about the number of kids that return the next season and the new kids that sign up,” he said.
Success, Murray also said, comes because of the team’s emphasis on unity. “It’s about what is best for the team and the program, not the individual.”
And what’s best for the program is a progressive system that starts with teaching kindergarteners and first graders the fundamentals of wrestling through fun. The program is open to any Cranford resident in grades K-8, and makes it a point to make every member, from the introductory level to regional competitors, feel included.
Every year, the program showcases how much each member is valued at the Cranford Youth Wrestling Banquet. At the banquet, every member of the team, regardless of level or age, is awarded a gift with the Cranford Wrestling logo on it, courtesy of the program’s parents association.
In addition, wrestlers who have committed three years to the team are presented with a Cranford Wrestling varsity jacket. Murray said it is something the kids cherish.
“It means a lot to the kids because their parents can’t buy it,” Murray said. “You have to earn it.”
The gifts are a sign of the unity that extends beyond the team. In fact, the entire township of Cranford is dedicated to supporting the youth wrestling program. Besides the parents association, the league receives sponsorship from the town PAL, which provides equipment and apparel for the league.
So this season, at the Union County Brawl or the NJ Kid States Championship, when the Cranford Wrestlers walk by in their varsity jackets, prepare yourself to face one of the strongest and most cohesive programs around.
