Swim Series Meet #3 Results

On Saturday December 5th, Harold Bernadzikowski, Steve Hicks, Frank Krach, Jerry Meyer, Mark Spence, and Coach Ray went to the Talbot County YMCA for the third Swim Series Meet.  There were almost 100 swimmers registered despite the weather.

In the 35-39 age group, Steve Hicks broke Scott McPherson's 200 breaststroke record of 2:48.44 that was set at the January Arundel Olympic meet in 2005 with an impressive 2:33.93.

In the 50-54 age group, Mark Spence continued his record breaking ways by first taking on another one of the most venerable records on our books, John Siebs' 50 freestyle record of 27.53 that was set at the 2001 UMBC Winter meet.  Mark dispensed with this record with a National Qualifying time of 26.38.  Next to go was Richard Mathews' 100 breaststroke record of 1:22.28 that was set at the 2006 December Swim Series Meet at Towson University.  This record was broken with another USMS National Qualifying time of 1:11.54.

In the 60-64 division, Jerry Meyer first set a new record in the 50 backstroke with a 41.37.  He then led off our 400 Medley Relay team with a new team record in the 100 Backstroke with a 1:25.82.

     Congratulations!

Swim Series Meet #2 Results

On Sunday November 15th, Steve Hicks, Jerry Meyer, and Coach Mike traveled to Washington College in Chestertown for the second Swim Series meet.

Huh?  What was that first name?

As many of you know, Steve Hicks has been a great friend of ours ever since he moved to the Eastern Shore from Colorado and established the Delmarva Dogfish Masters Team.  Earlier this year, the economy hit the Eastern Shore very hard, and Steve was forced to come to our side of the Bay Bridge to find employment.  These many months, the Dogfish's loss has been our gain as he practiced with us.  At the Washington College meet, Steve officially became part of the CMYM family by representing us in competition.  And he did so in record setting fashion.  He started things off in the 35-39 age group by breaking Coach Mike's 200 backstroke record of 2:21.55 set at the November Meadowbrook meet way back in 2003 with an impressive 2:17.99.  He then broke Craig Dewing's 200 IM record of 2:19.74 that was set at the UMBC Winter meet back in 2005 with an eye-popping 2:13.83.

In the 60-64 age group, Jerry Meyer celebrated his birthday from earlier in the week by breaking in the 200 backstroke record with a 3:04.54.

     Congratulations all!

Swim Series Meet #1 Results

On Saturday October 17th, we hosted the first Swim Series Meet of the season at the Ellicott City pool.  28 of our CMYM swimmers participated.  As a sign of our team's maturity on the ladies side, it is no longer a given that when one swims an event, a team record will be set.  The race to fill in the gaps in the record board is on!

Over on the men's side, John Aversa broke two established records in the 30-34 age group.  He first broke Craig Dewing's 200 butterfly record of 2:38.47 set at the NOVA pool in Richmond, VA in February of 2005 with a smoking 2:15.61.  He then turned around, and broke Craig Dewing's 200 breaststroke record of 2:36.29 set at Villanova University in February of 2004 with an equally impressive 2:26.47.

In the 40-44 age group, both Coach Ray and Scott Moffet set their sights on Phillipe Homassel's 200 backstroke record of 3:06.16 set at the first swim series meet of the 2006-2007 season in our pre-reonovation pool.  Both broke the record, but Scott beat out Coach Ray by almost a full length of the pool 2:43.59 to 2:59.29 to clinch the new team record.

In the 45-49 age group, Ed O'Malley continued his record making ways by breaking his own record in the 100 freestyle  of 1:01.57 that he set at the Catonsville YMCA in December of 2008 with a 59.64.

In the 50-54 age group, newcomer Mark Spence definitely shook things up by breaking three long established records.   First to go was Duer Pierce's 50 Butterfly record of 30.81 set at the Arundel Olympic Center in January of 2003 with an eye-popping 29.65.  Next to go was one of the most long standing records on our team.  John Siebs set the 100 IM record of 1:12.11 way back at the UMBC Winter meet in February of 2001...the first season that we came into existence as a team.  Mark dispatched that record with a 1:09.88.  The final piece of flotsam in the Spence maelstrom was the 50 breaststroke record held by Dan Beisel.  Beisel's time of 37.36 set at the Arundel Olympic Center in January of 2004 was swept aside by Mark with an amazing 33.93.

In the 55-59 age group, Dan Beisel broke his own 50 butterfly record of 32.40 set at the Arundel Olmpic Center this past January with a 32.00.

In the 65-69 age group, Roy Troppman made a triumphant return to the pool after multiple heart surgeries as well as the blessing of his doctor.  Swimming two individual events, he first broke Robert Alston's 50 freestyle record of 30.00 set at the 2007 UMBC Winter meet with an astounding 29.02.  Next, he broke Alston's 100 freestyle record of 1:12.05, also set at the 2007 UMBC Winter Meet with a swim-your-age time of 1:05.09.

In Relay action, we added four new standards to the record board.  The 25+ Women's 200 freestyle relay of Rena Jacobson, Helen Kottis, Stacey Moffet, and Kathy Jantac swam a time of 2:51.73 to complete that section of the board.  We now have a team record for every relay swum in the Short Course Yards program for 25+ Women.

Also on the Women's side, the 45+ 200 freestyle team of Gloria Serrao, Abby Glassberg, Carole Owen, and Anneliese Thomson set a new standard in that event with a 2:33.21.

Over on the men's side, Jerry Myer, Jeff Manchester, Dan Beisel, and Roy Troppman teamed up for our very first team record in the 55+ category with a new 200 Medley Relay time of 2:39.19.

Finally, Richard Mathews, Lori Hartle, Mark Spence, and Alice Spriesterbach teamed up to break some new ground of their own with a 200 Medley Relay time of 2:33.21 in the 45+ Mixed category.  This is our first team record in that age category as well.

      Kudos to all!

2008-2009 USMS Short Course Yards Top Ten Results

The 2008-2009 USMS Short Course Yards Top Ten Results have been released.  This past season, we had four relay teams swim top ten times.  In Short Course Yards, the age of the youngest swimmer determines the age group of the relay.  The 35+ Men's  800 Freestyle Relay team of Coach Ray, Phillipe Homassel, Coach Mike, and Harold Bernadzikowski swam a time good enough to place 8th in the USA.

The Women's 25+ 800 Freestyle Relay team of Ellen Dooley, Susan Boswell, Kathy Jantac, and Valerie Karam placed 5th.

The Women's 45+ 800 Freestyle Relay team of Anneliese Thomson, Julie Uhl, Carole Owen, and Abby Glassberg turned in a 5th place time for USMS.

Finally, the Mixed 18+ 800 Freestyle Relay of Crystal Ray, Scott Moffet, Richard Mathews, and Jen Lomangino swam a time good enough for the 10th spot.

 Kudos to all!

USMS 2008 Long Course Top Ten Results

USMS has released the 2008 Long Course Top Ten results.  Two of our CMYM relays swam times good enough to make the top ten for Masters Swimming competition in the United States.  In Long Course competition, the ages of the four swimmers are added together to determine the age category.

The Mixed 120-159 400 Freestyle Relay of Coach Ray, Karla Mack, John Aversa, and Anneliese Thomson swam a time that was good enough to be 3rd in the nation.  The Mixed 160-199 400 Freestyle Relay team of Jerry Meyer, Karla Mack, Coach Ray, and Anneliese Thomson swam a time that placed them 5th in the USA.

 Congratulations to all!

Karla Mack started things off in the 30-34 age group by setting two new team records in the 50 backstroke (52.92) and 50 breaststroke (49.95).

Over on the men's side, Jerry Meyer broke his 50 backstroke record in the 55-59 age group of 45.99 he set at UMBC earlier in the month with a 44.03.  He then set a new standard in the 200 backstroke with a 3:30.82.

Summer Swim Series Meet #4 Results

On August 9th, John Aversa, Jen Lomangino, Karla Mack, and Coach Ray went to UMBC for the final Summer Swim Series meet.  This meet was held in a 50 meter pool (also known as Long Course Meters or LCM for short), and was a fitting way to think of the Beijing Olympics....afterall, it was the same course that the Olympics use.

Jen Lomangino started things off by setting three new team records in the Women's 18-24 age group.  Her times in the 50 free (31.62), 100 free (1:11.31), and 200 free (2:38.26) are new standards in that age group.

In the Women's 30-34 age group, Karla Mack set three new records herself in the 50 free (37.82), 100 breaststroke (1:48.98), and 50 butterfly (50.30).

Over on the men's side, John Aversa started things off by apparently swimming four individual events instead of the limit of three (naughty, naughty!).  In the process, he set four new team records in the 30-34 age group in the 400 free (5:01.31), 100 breaststroke (1:22.18), 100 backstroke (1:15.49), and 200 IM (2:33.72).

Coach Ray continued stretching his comfort zone by swimming three events outside of his specialization, and in the process set three new records in the 40-44 age group, specifically in the 50 breaststroke (45.60), 200 backstroke (3:45.20), and 200 butterfly (3:37.67).

Under USMS rules, one's age as of the calendar year determines the age group in SCM and LCM.  So even though Rick Hrybyk won't turn 50 until October, he got a jump on the record board as a result of this rule.  He set a new record in the 200 IM with a 3:39.64.

And Jerry Meyer continued ripping up the record board with three new records in the 55-59 age group with swims in the 50 free (39.19), 50 backstroke (45.99), and 100 backstroke (1:40.50).

Finally, the foursome of Karla Mack, Coach Ray, John Aversa, and Jen Lomangino teamed up to break in the Mixed Long Course Meters Relay record board with a 400 Free Relay time of 4:54.29 in the 120-159 age group.

A good time was had by all.  Congratulations everyone!

Howard County Invitational Results

On Saturday July 19th, Karla Mack, Mark Cronin, Coach Mike, and Teck Choo represented CMYM at the Howard County Invitational held at the Roger Carter pool.  This meet was in a 25 meter course, also known as Short Course Meters (SCM for short).  Although this competition grouped all adults together in an over 19 group, for our purposes, all team records have been moved to the proper USMS age groups.

Karla Mack started things off by breaking two of her own team records.  Her 50 butterfly record of 47.88 set at last month's Big Vanilla meet went by the wayside with a 47.80.  Her 100 IM record of 1:50.03 set at last week's Talbot County YMCA meet was vanquished with an astounding 1:41.45.

In the men's 40-44 age group, Teck Choo set a new team standard in the 100 free with an impressive 59.71.  He then set his sights on Coach Mike's 50 butterfly record of 33.23 set at last month's Big Vanilla meet and answered with a jaw dropping 28.90.  Finally, Coach Mike answered the challenge by breaking his own 100 IM record of 1:16.98 set at last month's Big Vanilla meet with a 1:14.85.  A good time was had by all. Congratulations!

Summer Swim Series Meet #3 Results

On Sunday July 13, four CMYM swimmers  made their way to Easton for the third Summer Swim Series meet.  The meet was in a 25 meter pool (Short Course Meters, or SCM for short).  Jen Lomangino started things off with four new team records in the 18-24 age group with swims in the 50 free (32.53), 100 free (1:10.74), 200 free (2:36.70), and 100 IM (1:25.89).

Karla Mack then continued the trend in the 30-34 age group with a new team standard in the 100 IM with a 1:50.03.  Over on the men's side in the same age group, John Aversa broke in that age group with three new team records of his own.  He swam the 50 free (26.95), 50 butterfly (29.55), and 200 IM (2:32.70).

Finally, Jerry Meyer set three new team records of his own, breaking one of his own records in the process.  His new team standards were in the 50 free (40.18) and 50 backstroke (44.25), while he broke his own record of 1:33.12 in the 100 freestyle set at last month's Big Vanilla meet with a resounding 1:30.56.  Congratulations to all!

On the men's side, Coach Mike started things off with a new record in the 50 Backstroke for the 40-44  age group with a 34.06.  He continued by breaking Scott McPherson's 50 Butterfly record of 36.16 set at Thunderhill in June of 2007 with a 33.23.  Coach Mike then broke Scott McPherson's 100 IM record of 1:19.80 set at the same meet with a 1:16.98.

Jerry Meyer set three records of his own in the men's 55-59 age group with times in the 100 Freestyle (1:33.12), 100 Backstroke (1:42.10) and 200 Backstroke (3:26.59).

Our foursome then teamed up for a new team record in the 200 Medley Relay for the Mixed 160-199 division (SCM and Long Course Meters add the ages of the participants) with a 2:43.38.  Jerry Meyer swam backstroke, Karla Mack swam breaststroke, Coach Mike swam butterfly, and Anneliese Thomson swam freestyle.  Congratulations to all!

Swim Series Meet #4 Results

On Saturday January 19th, six of our CMYM men were a part of the 158 athletes who swam at the Swim Series Meet #4 at the Arundel Olympic Center.  Newcomer, John Aversa started things off with a bang by breaking three team records in the very solid 30-34 age group.  He started with the 100 breaststroke record of 1:08.41 set by Craig Dewing at Villanova University in February 0f 2004 by setting a new standard of 1:07.02. He then moved on to Coach Mike's 100 backstroke record of 1:02.91 set at the 2001 YMCA National Championships in Sarasota, Florida with an eye-popping 59.45.  His final record for the day came in the 200 IM with him breaking Dewing's standard of 2:17.07 set at the same Villanova meet as the breaststroke record with an impressive 2:13.88.

In the men's 40-44 age group, Phillipe Homassel broke his own 200 breaststroke record of 3:11.28 set at the November 2006 Salisbury YMCA meet with a resounding 3:06.89.

Finally, Dan Beisel aged up and immediately set upon three records of his own in the 55-59 age group.  He first broke Ron Heller's 50 Freestyle record of 38.64 set at the December 2006 Towson meet with a satisfying 29.86.  He then moved on to Heller's 100 Freestyle record of 1:31.72 set at last year's Arundel Olympic meet with a walloping 1:07.08.  He then finished off with a new standard in that age group with 2:28.26 in the 200 Freestyle.

     Congratulations to all!

Swim Series Meet #3 Results
On December 1st, four of our CMYM men traveled to Towson for the third swim series meet.   Scott Moffet swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.53 which was good enough to break Dave Ofstead's record of 1:21.61 that was set at the Arundel Olympic meet in January  of 2004.  Congratulations Scott!

Swim Series Meet #2 Results

On Saturday November 10th, 20 CMYM swimmers went over to UMBC to swim at the Swim Series Meet.  Craig Dewing returned to us, and did so in a very attention getting fashion by breaking Coach Mike's 500 Free record of 5:44.52 set at the 2004 Finale meet at UMBC with a very impressive USMS National Qualifying time of 5:24.26.

Teck Choo followed up with breaking two more records in the 40-44 Men's division with two USMS National Qualifying times of his own.  Both records were previously held by Ross Kennard.  In the 50 Free, Kennard's 23.99 time set at the 2002 UMBC Winter meet was surpassed with a 23.78.  In the 50 Butterfly, Kennard's 26.42 was erased with a 25.99 time.  Choo's performance in the 50 Butterfly is actually the fastest 50 Butterfly time for ALL men's age groups.

Not to be outdone, Catonsville Swimmer Robert Alston set a new team standard in the 100 IM for the Men's 65-69 division with a 1:36.92.  And just for the record, although his 50 Free time of 30.50 was not good enough to break his own team record he set earlier this year, it was good enough for a USMS National Qualifying time.

In addition, we put together four relays.  A good time was had by all.

Summer Swim Series Meet #1 Results
On June 24th, five of our CMYM men went down to the Thunder Hill Pool for the Summer Short Course Meters meet...where apparently nobody remembered to put together a relay. Doh!
Since this was a short course meters meet, for the men who were 40 and above, this was new territory. Scott McPherson started the ball rolling with new records in the 40-44 division with the 50 free (31.32), 50 butterfly (36.16), and 100 IM (1:19.80). In the 50-54 division, rookie Buzz Loftus beat out veteran Dan Beisel in the 50 free 34.54 to 34.66. In addition, Loftus had a new team record in the 100 free (1:23.27). Not to be outdone, Beisel set new standards in the 50 butterfly (37.96) and 100 IM (1:30.37).
Finally, in the 65-69 division, Maurice Harrison set new standards in the 100 free (1:42.27) and 200 free (3:57.44). Kudos to all!

Swim Series Meet #1 @ HCY (10/14/06)
On Saturday October 14, CMYM hosted the first swim series meet of the short course yards season. With 33 CMYM swimmers, it was almost inevitable that we saw some new team records set.

In the women's 30-34 age group, Toni Cheyney (AKA "the New Girl")set a new team standard in the 200 free with a 2:25.40.

In the women's 40-44 age group, Susan Elliot made short work of the existing team standards. In the 50 free, her time of 31.56 broke Cindy Durham's record set at the first HCYM time trial in April, 2001. Her 100 free time of 1:13.67 broke Cindy Durham's record that was set at the very first series meet we hosted in October of that same year. Finally, her 100 IM time of 1:29.13 broke Theresa Shea's record that was set at that same meet five years ago.

In the women's 45-49 age group, Annelies Thomson broke Cindy Durham's November, 2002 record with a 1:16.52. In the same division, Kim Morris set a new record in the 200 IM with a 2:52.47.

On the men's side, Teck Choo broke Craig Dewing's 200 free record that was set at the 2005 Zone Championships by also breaking the two minute barrier with a 1:59.68.

In the men's 45-49 age group, Jon Morris (Kim's husband who actually goes by "Greg," but registered as "Jon") broke Dan Beisel's December, 2002 50 Backstroke record with a 35.65. Jon also broke Dan's 50 Butterfly record that was set at the same meet with a 34.98.

To finish the men's division, Jeffrey Manchester and Maurice Harison set four new standards in the 65-69 age group. Jeffrey's new records were in the 50 Freestyle and 50 Breaststroke with 39.29 and 51.71 respectively. Maurice' records were in the 100 and 200 Freestyles with a 1:33.62 and 3:43.76 respectively.

For relays, the Women's 25+ 400 Medley Relay team of Toni Cheyney, Natalie Janiszewski, Amy Grammas, and Betsy Coe set a new blistering record of 5:02.52. To give you an idea of how fast that is, this time would have placed 6th in the country last year, and this record is almost 25 seconds faster than the current Women's 25+ Freestyle Relay team record!

On the men's side, the 45+ Relay team of David Douglass, Richard Mathews, Richard Hrybyk, and Dan Beisel destroyed the team record set at this same meet five years ago by John Siebs, Bill Morgante, Dan Beisel, and Curtis Baumann by almost twelve seconds with a 4:29.65.

Finally, the Mixed 45+ 400 Freestyle Relay team of Jon Morris, Carole Owen, Annelies Thomson, and Alistair Price set a new team standard with a 4:54.20.

    Kudos to all!
