Gators to face Phoenix in playoffs

The Central Kings Gators have drawn an unenviable assignment this weekend as the provincial high school football playoffs get underway on four fronts.
The Gators, who posted a 5-3 record during the regular season to finish fourth in the Scotia Division of the NSSAF Football League, have a first-round matchup with the two-time defending champion Citadel Phoenix in one of four Tier 1 quarter-final games.
The Phoenix, riding a 22-game unbeaten streak that dates back to October 2008, won all eight regular-season starts to finish first in the Nova Division, demolishing their opponents by a cumulative score of 398-80 in the process.
"We definitely have a hard task in front of us, no question," Larry Priestnall, coach of the Gators, said Wednesday night. "Citadel is a very strong team . . . but I’m looking forward to it."
The two clubs, playing Sunday afternoon at Huskies Stadium in Halifax, didn’t cross paths this season in the 17-team NSSAF loop’s schedule. But the Gators have studied film from Citadel games and Priestnall himself has seen them play this year.
"We’re gearing up for some of the stuff that they do . . . but for the most part we’re going to go in and play like we normally play and try to do the best we can," he said.
"My kids, they wanted to make Tier 1 and we made Tier 1, which was quite an accomplishment for us. And now . . . we’ve been practising hard all week getting ready and we’ll see what happens on Sunday."
The Tier 1 playoffs feature the top four clubs from each division crossing over in quarter-final play. They get underway Friday with the Scotia Division champion C.P. Allen Cheetahs paired off with the Northeast Kings Titans and the J.L. Ilsley Judges meeting the Lockview Dragons. On Saturday, the Sir John A. Macdonald Flames play the Horton Griffins.
Eight other teams are beginning the Tier 2 playdowns this weekend as well.
The Auburn Drive Eagles and Sackville Kingfishers start things off Friday night, while the Cole Harbour Cavaliers and Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals duke it out Saturday. The Cobequid Cougars and Halifax West Warriors square off Sunday in one of two contests, with the Prince Andrew Panthers and Dartmouth Spartans renewing their cross-town rivalry in the other.

Advertiser: Central Kings Clinches Tier 1 Playoff Berth
John Decoste
BY JOHN DECOSTE
Kings County Advertiser/Register
Central Kings’ football team joined Horton and NKEC in provincial Tier 1 playoffs with a 19-6 win over Dartmouth in rain and terrible field conditions Nov. 7 on Kinsmen Field in Canning.
The makeup game from the first week of the season had to be played in Canning because Acadia’s Raymond Field, the Gators’ normal home field, was booked for the AUS women’s soccer championship.
“Dartmouth wasn’t too happy with having to play on the grass, but we really didn’t have a choice,” said C.K. head coach Larry Priestnall, who pointed out, “it was just as bad for us as it was for them.”
To Priestnall, the Gators won “because we’re ‘mudders’ down here in the Valley.” On a day when sustained offense was hard to come by, “our defense played fantastic, all the way through.”
The Gators’ main weapon, tailback Ian MacMillan, ran well, but the muddy field negated most of his moves – and his lateral movement.
Into the breech stepped fullback Robert Priestnall, who had an outstanding game. Priestnall broke a 70-yard run on one play and, shortly after, ran the ball in from the three-yard line for a touchdown.
“I know he’s my son, but I don’t care,” Larry Priestnall said of Robert’s performance. “I’ve never been prouder of him than I was on Sunday.”
Priestnall also had praise for quarterback Mike Stevens, who “showed tremendous determination and heart.” Stevens “never quit all game,” and was rewarded just before the end of the first half when he completed a 40-yard plus reception to Robert Patterson, who caught it with one hand and ran it in for the second touchdown.
In the second half, the Gators moved the ball down the field, only to fumble in the end zone.
“One of our O-lineman – it was hard to tell if it was Bradley Burgess or Andrew Jennings-Lindsay” – fell on the ball for the final C.K. touchdown.
Priestnall acknowledged “the conditions were terrible - “I don’t know if I’ve ever played in worse, much less coached” – but the Gators did a much better job of adjusting than Dartmouth.
The victory allows Central Kings to close out the regular season with a 5-3 record, good for fourth in the division – and their best-ever record after finishing each of their first two seasons at 3-5.
The bad news, however, is, in qualifying for Tier 1, the Gators now face top-ranked Citadel November 14 in Halifax. Win or lose, Priestnall felt “it’s been a great season.
“In terms of competition, we likely would have been better off in Tier 2, but that wasn’t what the boys wanted. They accomplished all the goals they set for themselves at the start of the year, and I’m really proud of them.”
He was also pleased “all three Kings County teams qualified for the Tier 1 playoffs this season. It’s the first time that’s happened – and it might be the last time you see it for a while.”
Given NKEC has been playing high school football for just five years, Horton for four and Central Kings for three, “it’s quite an accomplishment for football here in the Valley.”
