On Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2012, CJVA 15 Surge travelled to New Rochelle, NY for a GEVA sponsored tournament.  The field of ten teams included perennial GEVA powerhouses such as CALI and Alpha Gamma, as well as CJVA’s 15 White Noise.

The day started out against a West Windsor team that Surge dispatched with ease, 25-9 and 25-17.  Next up was Performance, who threw a scare into Surge, pushing them into overtime.  But Surge not only won that game, 27-25, but recovered to crush them 25-8 in the second game.  The biggest challenge in Surge’s pool was CALI 15, who came into the tournament with a GEVA record of 26 wins and only 3 losses.  Both games were tightly contested, with Surge winning the first game 25-22, but losing the second, 25-19.  The final game of pool play was against LI Blaze, who Surge easily defeated 25-12 and 25-11.  Surge finished pool play in second place, due to a negative point differential with CALI.

Surge met their CJVA sister team, White Noise, in the semi-finals of the tournament.  White Noise captured first place in their pool, but Surge won the first game by a score of 25-13.  In what became the most intense game of the day, Surge held on, despite a fierce White Noise rally, to advance to the finals, 26-24.  The finals brought a re-match with CALI.  Despite the earlier loss to CALI, Surge took care of business quickly, defeating CALI by scores of 25-18 and 25-9! Surge put in a ‘super’ effort to win the tournament, advancing to 4^th place in the GEVA rankings.

Overall, MLK was a great start to the season!
