Ashleigh McGlothlin OK After Surgery
Medical
I spoke with Bobby McGlothlin this afternoon and he told me that Ashleigh's surgery went very well. The doctor did not put a time table on how long the process of rehab would be, but did say she should be fine to play softball. Whether that means she'll be ready by the Higher Ground camp, or if it may take a little longer really depends on how good the rehab goes. We took it as good news. Get well soon girl we need you!

Kasey Smith Injured During Basketball Game
Medical
We have another injury to report. This time it is Kasey Smith. She recently injured her ankle in a basketball game and will be in an air cast for 4 weeks and has been ordered not to compete in anything during that time. So finally after knowing this kid for 11 years, she is forced to take a break from softball, basketball, and soccer. Knowing Kasey though, she'll be back on the field before you know it. Get better soon!

Higher Ground Fastpitch Camp Is On!
Higher Ground Camp 6
UPDATE 7/20/07: The camp came to an end this Thursday, and we have found out a lot about this team. The girls were very tired which was a good sign that everyone worked hard. We had several girls who really stepped up this week and it really showed especially towards the end of the camp. We did have some who need to work a little harder, and hopefully that will happen next week. As Coach Garner said, every position with the exception of 2 or 3 are up for grabs, and they will go to the hardest working players who show the most improvement, and who deserve the position. Good camp ladies, and remember to keep working hard. For us to have a good season, everyone on the team is going to have to step it up!

The Lady War Eagles first day at Higher Ground Softball Camp in Anderson SC got off to a soggy start as the JV won their first game, and the Varsity was winning their game when the games were called. And before we could get to the bus, the bottom just dropped out. That was the wettest we've been in a while. Anyway, there was a lot of excitement as I think the girls were looking pretty good for this early in the summer.

I'll try to put some info on here as I can. Also, I have set up a photo album that you can go to and see some pics. Either click on Photo Album at the top tool bar, or click on the headline to go straight there!

Lanier Point Tournament Starts This Friday!
Hot 010

The first Varsity tournament of the year begins this Friday at Lanier Point in Gainesville.  For all varsity players, note that you will need to meet in the cafeteria of the school at 3:30 to prepare, and we will be leaving at 4:00 sharp.  First game time is 5:30 (I think).  JV players that want to go and watch the tournament can ride the bus with the Varsity, but will need to bring money to get in the gate.

It is going to be very hot this weekend, so be sure to hydrate yourself well!

Lady Elephants hold off Chestatee (Courtesy of Jeff Hart @ AccessNorthGA.com)
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville took advantage of three Chestatee mistakes in a four-run third inning and then held on for a 5-3 win in both teams' Region 7-AAA opener Tuesday in girls softball action.

Gainesville coach Clay McDonald said it was the kind of win his team needed.

"We've lost some games on mistakes and we were able to take advantage of their mistakes," he said. "We made some mistakes too but were able to get out of trouble a couple of times."

McDonald also knew it would be a tough game after his Lady Elephants handed Chestatee an 18-2 beating earlier in the season.

"We knew they would be ready for us and the girls stepped up and did a good job," McDonald said. "It was a very even game and we held on at the end."

Chestatee (0-7, 0-1 in region) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but could not get the big hit despite rapping out 10 in the game. The Lady War Eagles stranded 11 baserunners in the game.

Gainesville (4-7, 1-0) led 4-0 after the third inning but Chestatee scored single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to close the gap.

Caitlyn Ludwig got the win going the distance and allowing just two earned runs.

Rachel Kelly took the loss allowing just two earned runs and six hits.

Gainesville 5, Chestatee 3

Caitlyn Ludwig led the Lady Red Elephants on the mound with seven strikeouts Tuesday night at Talon Field in Gainesville. Ludwig also had two hits and two runs scored.

Lauren Tavao and Emily Windhorst added a hit for Gainesville.

Terry Armour led the Lady War Eagles with two hits and an RBI.

Rachel Kelly and Megan Stowers added two hits a piece for Chestatee.

Gainesville plays host to Pickens County at 5:55 p.m. today, while Chestatee travels to Lumpkin County at 6 p.m. today.

Lumpkin County no-hits Chestatee (Courtesy Jeff Hart @ AccessNorthGA.com)
Lumpkin County dominated Chestatee and won a mercy rule game 15 – 0 that was called with two out in the fourth inning. Jade Butler and Jade Grindle combined to no-hit the War Eagles, in facing just one more than the minumum through four innings pitched.

Freshman shortstop Rachel Kelly had a hit taken away by Lumpkin shortstop Meghan Cantrell, who made a nice pickup of a hard hit ball up the middle. Cantrell's throw to first was high, allowing Chestatee’s only baserunner to reach.

The War Eagles were plagued by errors (8) throughout the game, but center fielder Rachel Montrois made a nice grab of one of the hardest hit balls of the game off the bat of Chelsey Edelberg. Alyssa Van De Water made a nice scoop of a hard hit ball to second and Ashleigh McGlothlin played well at first.

Freshmen Stephanie Ward and Ashley Payne pitched for the War Eagles, with Ward going 2 innings and allowing 3 hits and 4 earned runs with 7 walks and 1 strikeout. Payne relieved and allowed only one earned run in 1 2/3 innings while giving up six hits and walking one.

The Lumpkin offense was led by cleanup hitter Morgan Chapman, who was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored and also reached on a walk as well. Chelsey Edelberg was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored while Emily Gaddis scored 3 times as well.

The War Eagles head to East Hall on Thursday (9/6) to take on the Vikings at 6:00.

War Eagles Thumped In Cherokee Invitational
Spinning New

In what will probably go down as the worst beatdown a Chestatee team has ever endured in the history of the school, the Lady War Eagles were handed some of the worst beatings I think any of us have ever witnessed.  The team - outside of about 2 or 3 innings - were just never even competitive.  Take the following weekend lowlights for instance:

1.  The Lady War Eagles were outscored by 53 to 7 over 4 games.

2.  Against Marist, every player on the team was put down in order by strikeout, and the only runner the War Eagles were able to put on the pads made it on a dropped 3rd strike.

3.  Again against Marist, after playing the first 1 2/3 innings pretty good, an infield hit should have been an easy out to 1st base and the 3rd out, was instead was thrown over the 2nd baseman's head to the fence, thus beginning the blood letting which led to 12 unanswered runs and a lopsided run rule defeat.

4.  An average of almost 10 errors per game (double if you count the mental errors that are not technical errors).

5.  Each opponent scored in double digits.

To say this was an ugly weekend is saying it nicely.  Game summary's will be added later, but I think the best thing we can do is put this horrible performance at Hobgood behind us and move on, but at the same time hope that we can look back on this experience as the turning point of our season!

Lady War Eagles Get Important First Win!
Clapping Hands

The Lady War Eagles got a team performance tonight that showed what can happen when everything clicks, defeating the Lady Knights of Johnson by a run rule score of 12-2 in 5 innings.  Stephanie Ward pitched a game that showed her potential, the defense played well, and the bats were alive!  A great performance that got that monkey off our backs!

Next up this Thursday night we play at Flowery Branch!  Let's keep this momentum going and build on tonight!

Lady War Eagles get first win over Johnson by Jeff Hart (courtesy AccessNorthGA.com)
Hot 018

GAINESVILLE - Thirteen turned out to be the lucky number for the Chestatee girls softball team Tuesday.

After opening the season with 12 straight losses, the Lady War Eagles got their first win of the season with a 12-2 pounding of Johnson at Talon Field.

Freshman pitchers Stephanie Ward, who earned the win, and Rachel Kelly combined on a two-hitter and allowed just one earned run.

"We're a very young team with five freshmen starters and two freshmen pitchers and they are still learning how to play at this level," Chestatee coach Tim Garner said. "We made some plays and finally got that first one. I can't tell you how good it feels."

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run Mercy Rule.

Chestatee (1-12, 1-3 in Region 7-AAA) got two hits and and one RBI each from Terri Armour and Rachel Montrois. Katy Womack had two hits and Kelly, Kasey Smith, and Alyssa Vandewater had one hit each for the Lady War Eagles.

Johnson's Lauren Johnson went the distance in taking the loss for the Lady Knights (1-13, 0-4). Caitlin Kent had both of Johnson's hits in the game.

Lady War Eagles Show Heart In Loss
New Pulse
The Lady War Eagles tonight showed heart after battling back from a 4-0 first inning deficit to fall in a hard fought game by the final score of 5 to 3.  We made some errors to begin the game, but played good after the shaky start.  We are showing some improvements, so hopefully the girls will see tonight as a positive and keep focus on improving each time we hit the field so that maybe we can put it together by the region tournament!

Lady War Eagles Competitive in North Cobb Invitational
Spinning New

This was our best tournament of the year.  Although we didn't win as many games as we would have liked, we did look much better this tournament than our last one, and we were competitive in all of the games played.  Friday night's games were rained out, so the girls went out to eat and had fun bowling for a couple of hours.  Then when we got back to the hotel, there was a team from Brunswick on the same floor and the girls kind of went dance crazy.

On Saturday we basically played 5 games in a row, and outside of a game against Dalton, we were competitive in all games - even winning a game against Wheeler by the final of 8-0.  Here are the scores:

Game 1 vs. Marietta (5-AAAAA) L 3-9

Game 2 vs. Wheeler (6-AAAAA) W 8-0

Game 3 vs. Dalton (7-AAAA) L 0-7

Game 4 vs. Hiram (4-AAAAA) L 1-5

Game 5 vs. Murray (5-AAAAA) L 2-4

I don't think we did too bad against 4 teams from 5A classification and 1 team from 4A classification.  Hopefully now the girls can carry some of this over into the next 3 weeks of region games.

Region Tournament Begins Monday Night
New Pulse
The Region 7-AAA tournament kicks off this Monday night with the CHS War Eagles taking on North Hall at North Hall field. The game begins at 5:30. Basically it is like this: The records each team in the region had to this point does not mean anything except for seeding purposes only. This is single elimination so the team that wins moves on, and the teams that does not win is out. Let's go Lady War Eagles and win! You have a chance to do something special.

Chestatee High School is searching for a new softball coach, principal Bill Thompson announced on Monday.

Former coach Tim Garner, who is also the War Eagles wrestling coach, will remain at the school but will only coach wrestling.

“We really appreciate the hard work and time he put in with the girls,” Thompson said.

Thompson said he has interviewed one candidate for the position and expects to talk with several more in the coming days.
