CHS War Eagles Fastpitch: 2006 War Eagle News
Friday, December 30Spring Tournament Team Information
![]() |
This spring we are planning on forming a team to play in several fastpitch tournaments both ISA and ASA. We will be playing 16 and under which means to be on the team you will need to be 16 on December 31, 2005. If you turn 17 on January 1, 2006, you can still play 16 and under.
This team will be comprised of dedicated players from CHS as well as other area high schools whom we will contact direct or will make the team through a try out process. The purpose is to have a team of girls who are dedicated to the sport of fastpitch softball and will take it as their #1 athletic priority for the coming months. Why do we want this to be your #1 priority? Simply, we need to be able to depend on you to be at practice and at the tournaments. With a team of around 12 players, we just have to depend on you that you will be at practice and play in the games.
We will plan on meeting towards the end of January and begin practice the first week of February. Our goal is to participate in 10 tournaments. The first tournament is usually the first weekend in March and we will play through around the 2nd weekend of June. As with anything these days, there is a cost involved (uniform, tournament fees, game balls, etc) and that has not been determined at this time. If you are interested or want more information, please call James Martin at 770-519-1941, Jerry Armour at 404-790-8689, or send us an email at chsfastpitch@bellsouth.net.

Devon Thomas Steps Down As Softball Coach
Coach Thomas has announced that he will be stepping down as head softball coach. For the past 2 years, he has held this job as well as head coaching duties at Brenau University. With his added responsibilities at Brenau plus his desire to further his own education, it just became clear to the coach that he was stretching himself too thin. Coach Thomas has given a lot to the ladies over the past years building a program from scratch that has won 2 Region 7-AAA titles in the past 4 years, and leaves the bar set high for future players. With the talent that is returning plus the announcement that Tim Garner will be taking over as Head Coach (more on Coach Garner in a future article), the program will continue to move forward. As Coach Thomas told me, "the team will be fine - they are in good hands".
Here is the remarks from Access North Georgia.com (click on the headline to be transported directly to their page):
GAINESVILLE - Chestatee girls softball coach Devin Thomas announced Thursday that he is giving up his coaching spot to concentrate on continuing his education.
Thomas, who doubles as the Brenau women's coach, will stay on at Chestatee in his current teaching capacity. He also will remain as coach of the Lady Golden Tigers.
"It was a tough decision but it's been tough to handle both jobs," he said. "But I've been wanting to go back to school and this was the best way to do it. I'm going to miss coaching the girls (at Chestatee). But, they'll do fine without me. We have a lot of talent coming back."
Thomas, who built the Brenau program from scratch over the last two seasons, led the Lady Golden Tigers to a 37-17 record this past season.
He also led Chestatee to two Region 7-AAA titles in four years.

Chestatee names Tim Garner New Softball and Wrestling Coach
Chestatee names new softball and wrestling coach
By Judd Hickinbotham
GAINESVILLE - Chestatee High School has a new man at the top of its softball and wrestling programs, and at first view, it seems to be a perfect fit.
Tim Garner, 48, will take over for Devin Thomas (softball) and Stan Lewis (wrestling) next year.
Garner, a member of North Hall High School's graduating class of 1975, has been with Chestatee for a year. He coached several fast-pitch traveling softball teams in Virginia, as well as being an assistant coach at Shenandoah University, in Winchester, Virginia.
The Chestatee softball team has won the Region 7-AAA title two of the last four years. Thomas steps down as coach to concentrate on his own education, but he will remain at the school as a teacher. Garner likes the team he's inheriting.
"I think we're going to have a pretty decent team," he said. "We'll have decent pitching. Hitting is still an issue for us, but we're going to be working that out over the summertime."
Garner knows something about wrestling, too. While at North Hall, he won two state championship titles. He's also a Georgia wrestling official, and he's ready for his chance at Chestatee.
"I actually didn't expect to be asked for two jobs like that, but working with Devin Thomas; he's the one that talked me into coaching softball again."
Lewis will relinquish his position as wrestling coach to concentrate more of his time as athletic director of the school. He will also remain as Chestatee's assistant principal for athletics.

Chestatee Stumbles in Season Opener
![]() |
WINDER – Things didn’t go the way the Chestatee softball team had hoped as it got pounded in its season opener to Apalachee on Monday.
The Lady War Eagles were unable to get any offense going and the defense also struggled giving up 10 errors in their five-inning 10-0 loss to the Lady Wildcats.
Chestatee’s only batters to get hits were Ashely McGothlin and Courtney Poole.
Chestatee’s pitcher Julie Garchow took the loss on the mound.
Chestatee’s coach Tim Garner said the loss was somewhat due to nerves and youthful mistakes, “The girls really didn’t come out focused but they’re young. It was also a big case of being nervous. Hopefully we can put this one behind us,” Garner said.
“Were going to go over our mistakes and rebuild and start over at practice tomorrow,” Garner said about getting his team back on track.
Chestatee’s next games will be in the Lanier Point Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday they will play Commerce and then on Saturday they will play Rabun County and Pepperell.

Stat Check Prior to Region Play
![]() |
Individual team leaders are senior Kayla Taylor with an impressive .524 batting average, 7 RBI's, 3 doubles and a homer to go along with a whopping .905 slugging percentage. Junior Terri Armour has scored 9 runs while sophomore Daphne Carder has the best on-base percentage at .667. Senior Julie Garchow has stolen 7 bases and senior Jessica Page has hammered 2 round trippers.
Although our defense has been erratic, Terri Armour has been busy at the hot corner with 22 assists and our second-bagger Kayla Taylor has 7 putouts, while junior outfielder Kasey Smith and sophomore Stephanie Snyder at first have played errorless ball. And behind the plate junior Ashleigh McGlothlin has done a fine job with only 4 passed balls in over 600 pitches and throwing out 10 would-be base stealers.
Our pitching has also struggled at times to find the strike zone but senior Cortney Poole (1-3) does have 12 punchouts and Julie Garchow (2-2) has a very nice 2.38 ERA and a save as well.
Next week promises to be very busy as we have 9 games in 5 days, starting with our first Region game Tuesday at Gainesville to be followed by our rain-makeup home opener against Region foe Lumpkin County on Wednesday. We play our third Region game in 3 days by hosting East Hall on Thursday and then we head to Cherokee County on Friday for a 6-game tournament. Coach Garner says this is where our conditioning comes into play and, hopefully, our girls will use Labor Day to rest up for this upcoming softball marathon! It should be real interesting and we'll have regular updates here to keep all informed of our progress as we begin our battle to make the 7-AAA Region playoffs.

South Gwinnett Thumps War Eagles
![]() |
The War Eagle defense struggled with 6 errors as the offense managed only 3 hits, 3 walks and 3 K's. Leadoff hitter and senior Julie Garchow was 2 for 3 with a stolen base and sophomore Daphne Carder was on base twice with a hit and a walk.
Our girls now focus on the beginning of Region play with Gainesville and East Hall next week sandwiched around our home opener and rain makeup on Wednesday against Lumpkin.

Lumpkin gets first region win
By Judd Hickinbotham
GAINESVILLE - After Tuesday's hard fought loss against North Hall, the Lumpkin County Lady Indians had to wait just one more day to get their first region win.
Lumpkin (3-5, 1-1) beat Chestatee 13-2 in six innings, with the help of an offensive explosion.
Emily Gaddis led the way, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and a home run. Chelsea Eddeberg added three more hits, including a triple, while knocking in three runs. Morgan Chapman and Laura Webber knocked in a pair of runs, while going a combined 5-7 from the plate.
Kayla Taylor led the way offensively for Chestatee (3-7, 0-2) going 1-for-2 with an RBI. And Casey Smith helped with her glove, making a great sliding catch in centerfield.
Lumpkin lost its first region game, 2-1 against the Lady Trojans, but had no such trouble scoring runs against the Lady War Eagles.
Lumpkin will visit Gainesville Thursday at 6 p.m., while Chestatee will be at home against East Hall.

Here We Go Again!
![]() |
This past weekend the team played against some of the toughest competition in the state. In fact, during Friday night's games against Blessed Trinity and Grayson, there were no less than 5 major Division I Colleges represented scouting players (including Georgia and Georgia Tech). During those games, although we didn't win, we competed at their level. If there is a lesson from this weekend it is that we need to "play up" every game just like we are playing one of the best teams. If we can learn to do that, then we will reach our goal of being one of the top 4 after the region tournament.

War Eagles Defeat Johnson
![]() |
By Judd Hickinbotham
OAKWOOD - On a wet, rainy night at Johnson High School, the Chestatee softball team kept itself warm and dry with some scorching hot bats.
The Lady War Eagles (4-9, 1-1) scored nine runs in the first inning and six more in the second to put Johnson away in just three innings through the raindrops. 15-0 was the final, as Chestatee got its first win of the season in Region 7-AAA.
Julie Garchow pitched all three innings for the win, giving up a lone single to Caitlin Kent, while striking out three.
Garchow also led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 and scoring three times. Jessica Page added a pair of doubles, and scored two more runs for Chestatee.
Jami Barnes started the game for Johnson (0-11, 0-4), but was chased in the first inning. Courtney Fagge, though, pitched well in relief.

Lady Trojans Win Pitching Duel
![]() |
MURRAYVILLE – After getting out of a bases load jam in the second inning, Caitlin Rice then retired the next 16 batters she faced to help the North Hall girls softball team beat Chestatee on Tuesday.
Rice pitched the complete game while striking out 8 and walking one in North Hall's (15-9, 8-1 in region) 2-0 win over Chestatee.
The Trojans got its first run in the first inning when leadoff batter Amanda Albertson reached on an error and then stole second.
Jessica McCrary then singled to move Albertson to third. Albertson then scored on a ground out by Anna Bower to make it 1-0.
Chestatee tried to get some runs across in the second inning but was unsuccessful.
Rice struck out the first two batters and then three straight batters reached base for the Lady War Eagles.
Ensley Martin singled, then Rachel Montrois walked, and Julie Garchow hit an infield single to load the bases. Rice then was able to get Kasey Smith to ground out to end the inning.
The only other score of the game came in the sixth inning when Sarah Caldwell hit a triple and was able to score on a throwing error to make it 2-0 North Hall.
North Hall coach Roger Fannin said he was very pleased with Rice's outing, “She pitched a great game. She’s pitching well for us. Her era is 0.79 on the year. We know when she’s going we have a chance to win,” Fannin said.
Garchow also pitched a sensational game for Chestatee. She pitched the complete game while not allowing an earned run and striking out four batters. She struck out the side in the fourth inning.
Rice gave up just three hits and Garchow allowed just four.
The top batters for North Hall were McCrary who was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Three players for Chestatee had a hit.
Fannin believed the offense was mainly kept quiet by Garchow and did not attribute too much of it to the tough loss to Pickens on Thursday, “I’m sure that could have something to do with it (the loss to Pickens) but you have to give Garchow credit she pitched a great game," Fannin said.
"She was changing her speed well and moving the ball inside and outside. Give her some credit for pitching a great game.”
Fannin said the loss to Pickens was tough to swallow, “It’s tough to play when you comeback from a big loss like that," Fannin said.
"They start wondering whether or not they can do the things they’ve been doing before. It was good for us to come out and win tonight,” Fannin said.
North Hall's next game will be at home against Gainesville on Thursday at 6:00 P.M.
Chestatee will play at home against Pickens on Thursday at 6:00 P.M.

Season Over For The Lady War Eagles
![]() |
Over the next few months we will have a lot of work to do. We will have to fill the shoes of our pitchers who were both seniors. We will either need someone to move in that is looking for pitching time, or we will need one of the younger girls to step it up a notch. Either way that is something that we need to work on. Also, we need to work on our hitting. Our number 1 hitter is a senior and someone will need to step in and fill her shoes. We have the talent to make it happen.
We would like to thank our sponsors for their support this year. We'd also like to thank the coaching staff for all of their hard work and dedication. To all of the parents, thanks for your support. And last but certainly not least, thanks to all of the Varsity and JV players that tried so hard!

CHS SEASON ENDING BANQUET A BLAST!
![]() |
After a dinner of just about everything from their menu (including a few old fashioned milkshakes), Coach Keith stepped up to the microphone and said a few words, then proceeded to give out the hard earned awards for the Junior Varsity team. The JV had a tough year, but it was a very good learning experience for them. We have to remember the youth on the JV – all players with the exception of 1 are in the 8th grade! There is a very good core group coming up and I believe they have a very bright future. This year’s JV award winners are:
Most Improved: Maritza Casas
Leadership: Morgan Waters
Hustle: Jessie Stone
Golden Glove: Ashley Payne
Silver Bat: Rachel Kelly
Next, Coach Garner took the microphone and as we have all learned, he has a story for everything and he commenced to tell us a story from his youth about catching horses. This tied into the year that we had – which was tough, but could have been much worse if the players hadn’t stepped it up! We didn’t win as many games as we would have liked, but we competed against some very tough competition for most of the year and actually had a better year than anyone had predicted. Then he presented the Varsity awards…and the winners are:
Dedication: Terri Armour
Most Improved: Jessica Page
Golden Glove: Cortney Poole
Silver Bat: Kayla Taylor
MVP: Julie Garchow
Coca Cola Academic Achievement Award: Julie Garchow
War Eagle Award: Kayla Taylor
The future for this team is good. We have a great group of young kids that will have some opportunities next year, and even though we are losing 4 seniors that have been a big part of this program for the past few years, we are returning more players with varsity experience than we have in quite some time. We do have a few holes that will have to be filled, but something good is going to happen! It always does to people who work hard!
Congratulations Lady War Eagles on a great year!
