Competitive Edge Football Camps: Q and A
Competitive Edge Football Camps

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
Q & A with Competitive Edge Football Camps

Q: How long have these camps been around?
A: The 2008 season will be our 7th season running the camps

Q: Are all the camps day camps or do you have overnight camps as well?
A: For the second consectuive year, we will have a camp with overnight facilities at Cal State Univ-Monterey Bay. There we will utilize the dorm rooms and cafeteria. The cost for this will be $100/person (bringing your own linens) and will include a bed and 3 meals/day. The dorm rooms, cafeteria and camp fields are all within walking distance. All out of town teams are welcome to participate in this camp. Please let us know quickly if you are interested because there is very limited availability.

Q: How many teams do you expect to participate this year?
A: We are expecting a total 65-75 teams to participate in at least one of our 8 camps this year.

Q: Are Junior Varsity or Frosh/Soph programs welcome to the camps with their Varsity programs?
A: Absolutely. We reserve field space at most of our camps specifically for these programs. While the varsity is on one field scrimmaging (or 7 on 7) against another varsity team, the younger programs will be on the "Pup" field scrimmaging same aged opponents. We do our best to keep everyone very busy at our camps.

Q: How many teams are at each camp?
A: The number of teams is dependent on the layout and field space of each facility hosting the camp. We have camps that can accomodate 8 teams and we have camps that have 12 or 14 varsity teams and still have room for 6+ Jv or Frosh/Soph programs. Speak with the camp director for more details about each particular facility.

Q: What is the competitive level at each camp?
A: Each camp is different. Several camps we have are stacked with playoff teams. We also have camps with teams that are rebuilding or are smaller schools with a limited number of athletes participating. Contact the camp director Mike Carrozzo (408)888-7570 for more information on which camp is best for your team.

Q: Do you except individuals in your camps or must the whole team come?
A: Unfortunately, we do not except individuals. We decided very early on that our main focus was going to be on high school TEAMS. We do this for several reasons. (1) It is critical for successful programs to bond as a team. These camps are designed to get kids to play for each other. Non contact team competitions, scrimmages, 7 on 7, and King of the Field competition are some of the tools that we use to make teams stronger. (2) We feel its critically more important for players to learn THEIR teams playbook, not a camp renegade playbook.

Q: What makes your camp different from every other team camp?
A: We are different in several ways. First of all is our coaches. Having an outstanding staff of college coaches from every level (Div 1, 1-AA, 2, 3 and JC) gives us the ability to provide great instruction for the players as well as get them exposure to coaches they hope to play for at the next level. We have coaches from as far away as New York and North Carolina that work with us at our camps armed with a stack of applications for targeted athletes to complete at the end of each camp day.

Secondly is camp health insurance. Not many camps I know provide a supplimental $25,000 medical policy for each participant.
Third is our camp book, which provides much needed information BEFORE the camp starts.

Lastly, is that we predicate everything on teams. As mentioned in the earlier question, the format of our camp is designed for great individual instruction for each player at each position, but the team atmosphere and competitions are very benificial for team building and bonding.

Q: What is in the camp books that are so helpful?
A: Probably the most important thing coaches love about the camp book is the scheme information of all of their opponents. Having this info before the camp starts means no more "blind scrimmaging". The book also includes the camp format, scrimmage schedule, guidelines of the camp, camp coaches information and assignments, drills, competition rules, a feedback questionaire, and sponsor information.

Q: What does your camp do, if anything, to minimize injuries?
A: First of all, anytime you participate in any camp, individual or team, there is always the risk of injury. There are ways that we use to help minimize injuries. We preach always wrap up and drive back. Keep them off the ground. We also tout to initiate all contact above the waist. Our college coaches act as officials during the 7 on 7 and scrimmage periods and they know exactly when to blow the play dead in an effort to minimize injuries. Having said all that, I must reiterate, there is always a risk with contact football camps, ours or anyone elses.

Q: How many certified trainers are at each camp?
A: Usually we will have 3 trainers at an 8 team camp and as many as 6 trainers at a 16 team camp.

Q: What are the "Team Competitions" you keep mentioning?
A: There are 3 team competitions at each camp. The Skills Relay Competition (for all the skill positions), The Tug 'O' War Competiton (for linemen) and the King of the Field Competition (for the entire team). Each of these competitions result in the winning team earning a large sculpture trophy commerating their victory.

Q: What do I do for accomodations if I am coming from far away?
A: Let us know. We will help you with hotels, campgrounds, etc. We will help with transportation arrangements. We will do whatever we can to help make the entire camp experience a positive one. Several of our camp sites are specifically chosen because of their close proximaty to multiple hotels. Two camps this year will be at CSU-Monterey Bay utilizing the dorms and cafeteria on campus for a fee of $100/person (bringing own linens).

Q: We are not able to utilize our own programs football gear, do you have gear rental available?
A: Yes, through a 3rd party, gear is available for rental upon request.
