Saturday, September 27 CA District 14 Umpires Dinner A Success CA District 14 Little League held their 15th Annual Umpires Recognitation Dinner on September 26th at Beck's Steakhouse and had one of the largest attended dinners they have hosted. After the dinner, District Administrator, Reggie Torres, welcomed and thanked the umpires for their time and efforts for not only umpiring during the tournaments, but the regular season as well. After Reggie's speech, every District Staff member and league umpire introduced themselves and their guests. District 14 held a raffle for two umpire bags and an umpire's mask. Susan George, whose husband Matt umpires for Warm Springs Little League, was the first winner and selected a bag. Rich Kuwitzky, from Niles-Centerville LL, was the next winner and selected the mask. Rich then donated the mask to fellow NCLL umpire, Chris Barton, an 18 year old umpire who attended the Western Region Junior Umpire School this past summer in San Bernardino. Chuck Reichel, the Umpire-In-Chief for NCLL, was the last winner and went home with the last umpires bag. District 14 also held a 50/50 raffle, which was won by another NCLL umpire, Gary Williams. Gary then donated his winnings back to the District. A big THANK YOU to Gary!! District 14 also sold Umpires Wives T-Shirts, which we hope to see at the fields. District 14 Umpire coordinator, Bruce Marcellus, introduced Chris Barton, who spoke on his experiences at the Junior Umpires School. Tim Fritag, from Centerville National LL, also attended the school. District 14 had nine adults attend the Western Region week long adults umpire school; Jay Borges, George Guzman & Tom Gent from Mission San Jose LL, Steve Cummings from Fremont American LL, Ron Mosso and Kenton Whitaker from Warm Springs LL, Brad Kibbee from Centerville American LL, Frank Bontempo & Rob McCarthy from Centerville National LL. This past tournament season, District 14 swapped umpires for games with Districts 4, 12, 45, 52, 59 & 67. A big Thank-You to Districts 59 & 12 for giving District 14's Tom Curtis as many games as they did. Tom, who is the District 14 Senior Coordinator, was selected to umpire in the Western Region Junior All Star Tournament in Aliso Viejo, CA. Tom spoke about his experiences at the tournament, including being on the field when an earthquake hit. District 14's Major Coordinator, Vic Langford, was selected to umpire in the European Regional All Star Tournament, that was held in Poland, for the second consecutive year. Vic spoke abut his experiences in Poland, including the orphanage the Tournament Umpires sponsor. District 14 Umpire Coordinator, Bruce Marcellus, was selected to umpire in the Western Regional Senior All Star Tournament in Ontario, CA. Bruce spoke about his experiences, including stories about the field, where the movie "A League of their Own" was filmed. District 14 gave out their annual MUC (Most Unusal Call) awards. The fist went to Don Bierman from Mission San Jose LL. During the opening game of the 10/11 Divisional Tournament, Don called a batter out on strikes, but the batter only had a 2-1 count on him....Oops! The second winner (?) was District 14's Minor Coordinator, Greg Kaufman. During a Senior All Star game a batter with a 3-2 count on him was hit by a pitch in the strike zone and started for first, but Greg feeling the batter leaned into the pitch called the batter back to continue his at bat, only to then realize that a batter with two strikes is out if hit by a pitch in the strike zone......Oops! Frank Bontempo, an annual MUC winner, was the next to receive an award. During a 10/11 Divisional game, with runners on base, Frank called an illegal pitch and awarded the runners a base, only to have a fellow umpire tell Frank, that the awarding of bases on an illegal pitch is only allowed in the upper divisions......Oops! Gary Williams then presented Bruce Marcellus with a surprise MUC award. It seems while Bruce was getting dressed to do a game, he put his chest protector on over his umpires shirt and started for the field. Gary, who was a member of the umpiring crew, asked him if he was going to put another umpires shirt over his chest protector......Oops! District 14 did give out some serious awards. The 2008 Rookie of the Year Award went to Steve Cummings, from Fremont American Little League. The 2008 Most Improved Award was presented to Dan Carscadden and the 2008 Jay Horry Umpire of the Year Award winner was Rob McCarthy. Both Dan & Rob are umpires in Centerville National LL. Rob is also the league President. Congratulations to all the award winners and a thank you to all the CA District 14 Umpires.
