The 2007-2008 version of the C. E. Byrd Yellow Jackets have taken their work ethic, goals and aspirations to new heights under the guidance of a new coaching staff. The team was introduced to their future coaches, Head Coach Al Cantwell and Assistant Coach Ramsey Branch in early June when they assembled for the beginning of the American Legion Summer Season.

Cantwell and Branch led the “Shreveport Bees” Under 19 Team to a 2nd-Place Regular Season finish that was capped by a 4th-Place Finish in the American Legion District Tournament. The Bees roster consisted of future Byrd athletes only, and were led by seniors Allen Degges, Cody Hester, Clint Lites, and Andy Pickett.

The Bees Under-17 Team also made a play-off appearance with a Byrd filled roster where they dropped a one run decision to Airline who put an end to a very successful summer season.

The late summer momentum carried over into the newly developed off-season training program by the Yellow Jackets. Led by LSUS Olympic Weight Lifting Center assistant Tim McInnis, the Jackets have begun a year round Olympic Weight Lifting strength and conditioning program. In addition to morning workouts, the Jackets have responded very well to the new speed training and throwing programs.

The graduating class of 2008 has seen the expansion of the Byrd Baseball program from the ground up. They have battled through a change of venues, coaches, district changes, and obstacles that not all athletes have to go through. They have responded valiantly with what some outsiders may consider a “young roster”. Others, including Coach Cantwell believe that the Jackets have a perfect mix of upper and lower classmen.

The C. E. Byrd Baseball program is one of the quickest up and coming high school  programs in the state of Louisiana. In just three short years, “The Hive” has grown into one of the finest high school playing facilities in the area thanks to the continuous support from the Byrd High School Administration, Alumni, students, the community, the player’s and their families.

Fresh off their first playoff appearance in three years in 2007, the coaching staff has assembled a highly competitive schedule for 2008. Highlighting the schedule are the likes of perennial powerhouse Barbe HS, Texas High, Tyler-Lee, Division 1A State Runner-up Mangum and a pair of games against Defending 1A State Champion Calvary. The Yellow Jackets will also square off against the likes of Rummell, Haughton, Benton and John Curtis in a very tough tournament schedule. Such a vigorous schedule will help prepare the Yellow Jackets to compete in a very tough 1-5A District which includes Southwood, Huntington, Airline, and 4-A State Runners-Up, Captain Shreve.
