SOCCER PRACTICES
PRACTICES at John Swett Elementary School.

We will be practicing on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Tuesday's practices are from 5:00 to 6:00. Saturday's practice will be from 8:45 to 10:00, also at John Swett School.

Inside/Outside Figure 8 Dribbling Race
Players simultaneously race around 2 cones in a "Figure 8" pattern using only the inside and outside of one foot (so they turn around one cone using the outside of the foot and around the other cone using the inside of the same foot). Each player must complete 5 trips around the cones and back to the start. Then, play again with everyone using only the other foot. We wil play 4 games (2 with each foot).

Why play this Practice Game? If you watch a lot of soccer, you will notice that good players can control the ball using the inside and outside of the same foot. Being able to do so is very useful in dribbling and shielding the ball. We believe the best way to teach dribbling is require players to try using various dribbling styles at young ages so each player can develop the style that works the best for him or her. This Game forces players to use both the inside and outside of the same foot to control the ball.

Teaches: Using the inside and outside of the same foot to dribble and turn.

Passing Pairs Game
Pair up players & have them face each other, 5 steps apart. On "Go", see which team can complete 20 two-touch inside-of-foot "push passes" first. Before they start, we will review the fundamentals such as knees bent, bounce on your toes while waiting to receive the pass, etc. At the end of each "game", we will give tips on how they can improve (e.g., if the pass is going into the air, it is because they are striking the ball too low; if their pass isn't straight, see if their plant foot is pointing toward the target & if they are following through with their kicking foot toward the target.
