OPENING DAY CEREMONIES
OPENING DAY - 2011, Third time's the charm !!!On April 17th, after 2 postponements due to inclement weather, the Brunswick Railroader Little League was able to officially get their 58th season underway with what President Mike Price called "a great day again for Brunswick baseball". On a rare Sunday opener starting at noon, the BRLL organization was able to squeeze in pictures, the parade, the ceremony, and 2 Major games ending around 9pm. There was also a game played at the other 3 divisions, as the Little League complex was a beehive of activity all day long. Rich Maceron, a former coach in the league and the father of the late Richie Maceron, a former player, came back to throw out the first pitch as families of former players who died at a young age gathered. Each young man's playing number has been retired, and the families were presented jerseys framed with a picture of the player. Wooden cutouts of their jersey, with the team colors and numbers the player wore in their Little League days, are attached to the equipment building beyond the right field fence. They were done by Jason Rickets. Above the cutouts is a quote from the baseball movie "Sandlot": Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. The Brunswick legends honored were Jason Axline, Kenny Banner, Rich Maceron, Andy Maught, Charlie McLane and Preston Tarleton. "The Maceron, Axline, McLane, Maught and Tarleton families were very touched," said Price after the uniform replicas were presented and words read about the sons who once wore the uniforms on the field where the ceremony was held. The Banner family have moved from the area and could not be located. The idea of honoring former players who past away at a young age came from Little League's Major Oriole coach Steve Dinges who spearheaded the project. Also honored were last year's winning post season teams. The Cubs won their 3rd consecutive league title then won their 3rd consecutive District 2 Tournament of Champions title. The 9 &10 all-stars won the District title, and the 11&12 all-stars charged through the District and State championships into the Regional tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. As he does every year, Price mentioned the late Elizabeth Frye, saying her generosity made much of what the League has today possible. Then Rich Maceron threw out the first pitch to Pirate Noah Hawes - a strike according to Chief Umpire Tony Russo - and a brand new season in the Brunswick Little League was officially underway.

The Brunswick Railroader Little League hosted the 2011 State 9 & 10 and 10 & 11 All-Star Tournaments from July 16 to July 22, 2011. When the announcement was made at the June 6, 2010 Presidents meeting held at the Green Country Inn in Brunswick, BRLL President Mike Price said "This was not something that was our turn to get but something that was earned! With all the districts in the state, each district only gets the tournament every 8 years, but the district then selects the league they feel can best host the tournament and as the District Administrator said today, we deserved this. The condition of our fields, the state of our league, our volunteer coaches and umpires, and the board we have in place was a package that won this honor. So I am very proud of this and happy for the Brunswick community to host all of the district winners next year from all parts of the state."
